Summary

V Rising is a top-down-like action-adventure game where you play as a vampire who had survived the slaughter of your people. Traverse the huge open world in search of valuable resources for crafting and building up your base, as well as to grow your vampire’s strength so you could take on even more challenging bosses and creatures. You can even go about restoring the glory of the vampires alone or team up with friends in its co-op mode.

Plotline

Vampires used to rule the world but they almost became extinct, no thanks to humanity’s ruthlessness in hunting them down. Thankfully, you are one of the few who managed to make it. After a lengthy hibernation, you have awoken from your deep slumber, weakened but determined to reclaim the world for your people.

Gameplay

V Rising starts off quite similar to a typical RPG. You create your character, go through a tutorial where you are guided through the basics, and then you’ll finally head into the Farbane Woods - you get to choose one of two starting points - to start your adventure. However, unlike a typical RPG, the game gives you a little taste of fear, and also showcases its brilliant use of day-night cycles, right from the get-go.

Once I entered the woods, I made the mistake of following the path and running straight in… in broad daylight. After all, vampires will turn to dust in the sun. Everyone knows that. Imagine my panic when my vampire’s health started plummeting… fast! Thankfully, the dense foilage and tree cover in the woods meant plenty of shadowy places to hide and restore some health via the Blood Mend ability.

This doesn’t mean that the player isn’t encouraged to go out exploring - and there are plenty of that to do, considering how big the game world is - during the day though. As long as you stick to the shadows, you should be able to still go about farming resources and even taking on some enemies along the way. This is especially important since vampires technically don’t need to sleep and you could really make use of every extra material you gather from the environment.

Plus, you’ll also want to be mindful of which foliage you cleared or tree you chopped down since clearing an entire of these “sun covers” might make traveling a bit harder for you during day time.

Crafting and base-building is another important aspect of the gameplay. Less than an hour into the game, you’ll be prompted to set up your Castle Heart just so you can start building a place to call a crypt… I meant home. Building anything in this game is as simple as bringing up the build panel/UI and choosing a place to build. Of course, you’ll need to have the necessary resources, which could take some time to farm. As you progress to more advanced structures, you’ll need better materials that you’ll need to produce yourself from the raw materials gathered, such as getting planks from the wood you collect from your sawmill.

Most structures in the game require some sort of fuel to operate and that fuel is Blood Essence. Thankfully, you don’t need to power each structure by manually adding in the essences yourself since they can simply draw the fuel they need from the Castle Heart. As long as you’ve got enough essence there, your structures should work automatically until either the required raw materials have been exhausted or the essence from the Heart has depleted.

At the beginning, getting enough essences may seem like an uphill battle since you seem to get them as drops from slaying your enemies, but once you’ve got the Blood Press placed, you’ll uncover more ways to craft more essences.

Crafting here is pretty much the standard fare when it comes to game progression. You get the materials; you craft a variety of tools and armor, and you do it all again but this time with better quality materials, such as copper as opposed to bone.

As a vampire, the only way you can sustain yourself is by drinking blood. There are many ways you can come across some, whether by pouncing on some poor mice or taking on tougher foes like bandits. Similar to catching a Pokemon, you’ll want to weaken your enemy first before feeding on them.

The quality of the blood you get matters in V Rising too… well, so do the type. Let me explain: Enemies in this game are separated into various classes. They can be grouped as “Creatures”, or humans which includes “Rogue”, “Brute” and more. There’s also the easier-to-get “snacks” like mice or leftovers from your main course that would be grouped under “Frailed”. Naturally, not every enemy you encounter will have blood for you to feed on, such as skeletons and zombies.

Besides Frailed, different blood types at different ranks of quality will grant you different abilities. For instance, drinking the Rank 1 blood of a Brute will grant you the Life Leech ability for your primary attacks. Of course, if you’ve got a good blood type and quality going, you’ll still need to feed without wanting to take on your opponents’ potentially weaker blood-linked abilities. This is where some accurate timing is needed.

You see, you can cancel a feed midway through, allowing you to have your fill of blood without taking on the blood type, but the trick here is to maximize the blood you get and cancel the feed just when it’s about to end.

There’s also this special type of blood called V Blood, which will grant your vampire permanent abilities when consumed. However, the only kind of enemies that have V Blood are the “bosses” in the game so you can expect the fight to be fairly hard. They are often surrounded by a sizeable force that will respawn within 24 hours, and they come with special abilities that hurt a lot if you are unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end.

Now, if you are playing the game in its Online Play mode, you’ll want to be on your toes since your castle can be raided by other players. This means you’ll want to set up shop in a place that’s easily defensible, like on top of a cliff. You’ll also want to make sure you’re vigilant while exploring and gathering resources. For co-op mode, you can play the game with friends so as to lighten the grind of the game by a fair bit.

Community

V Rising is a game that’s meant to be played online either with friends or against other players. You can choose between Online Play mode which will pit you against other players worldwide as you battle for supremacy or you could start a private game and invite your friends to come play with you. The Private Game mode is also the mode you’ll want to go to if you fancy playing the game alone in single-player.

You can even Host a Dedicated Server by renting one or setting up one of your own.

Graphics/ Sound

V Rising has incredible graphics that reminded me of Dragon Age. When it’s bright during day time, the vibrant colors of your surroundings really popped and I love that. Even at night, the visuals look fantastic. The sound effects and ambiance in this game are amazing as well. Every hit feels impactful here and the ambiance really brings the environment to life.

Conclusion

To put it simply, V Rising is a revolutionary vampire-themed RPG that really makes full use of every trait that is typically associated with these immortal creatures, be it drinking blood or avoiding the death rays of the sun. The game is challenging without being overly so, except perhaps if you play its Online Play mode and happened to encounter veterans of the game. Plus, there’s a massive world for you to explore as a creature of the night, plenty to craft and upgrade, as well as a base to build and expand. The game is definitely worth buying especially if you’re into vampire games and love RPGs.
