Summary
Point-and-click adventure games were among the earliest games, and many loved them. Compared to earlier games, they delivered a fair bit of lore and though limited, a world to explore. In a way, they were a fresh breath of air compared to action games of yore. We had the likes of Grim Fandango, Maniac Mansion, and Blade Runner before. Unfortunately, we can safely say they have become quite outdated, thanks to the evolution of gaming technologies, the rise of open-world titles, and the fresh ways in which developers infused lore into their creations.
However, the time of point-and-click adventures isn’t over, not with games like Unusual Findings hitting the market. This suspenseful, old-school PnC adventure delivers a silly yet the scary tale of three kids who somehow (and by choice) find themselves in the middle of an extraterrestrial incident in a quiet and remote town. Set in the roaring decade of the 80s, its retro pixel art style delivers a unique vibe along with its plethora of pop culture references and objects of the era. Unlike its relatively linear peers, though, the game has multiple endings, and your dialogue choices matter, especially since they can determine how the three central characters approach specific problems.
So, should you give Unusual Findings a shot? Well, let’s take a good look at what it has to offer:
Plotline
Without diving deep into spoiler territory, Unusual Findings follows the story of three friends, Vinny, Nick, and Tony. You’ll play as Vinny and have to deal with the rather enthusiastic Nick while managing the whiz that is Tony.
Set in a remote town, the game follows this trio’s misadventures involving a spaceship crashing into the woods nearby after Tony installs a signal unscrambler so they can watch free cable TV. Though Nick is just in it at first to watch adult stuff (talk about teenage hormones), all three kids will have to deal with the Strider, a tall alien going around town and taking people out silently. Apart from this, they also need to take care of specific issues some of the residents face so they can get all the help they need.
Gameplay
If you have played point-and-click games before, you will feel at home in Unusual Findings. Sure, the genre might be outdated, but the game stands out even among open-world adventures. This is primarily thanks to its other gameplay elements, hilarious dialogue, relatable characters, and overall art direction. If you’ve watched Back to the Future before, you’ll see familiar sights, like old game consoles, sci-fi pop culture references, and tech like cassette tapes, game cartridges, and cable CRT TVs.
The main quest in Unusual Findings centers around the friends and their endeavor to uncover the mystery of an alien waltzing around town. You can explore by pointing and clicking on objects, and once you do, a prompt to look, grab, or talk to will appear. In a typical point-and-click fashion, you can hold things in the environment and merge them into your inventory to make a new item. Though this gameplay loop may sound a tad dull for some, the experience is enhanced by the well-written dialogue that can give you fits of laughter on short notice. The controls are relatively intuitive, and you only need a mouse to play. However, you’ll also have the option to switch to a controller if you wish.
In Unusual Findings, the dialogue options are as important as the puzzles you’ll end up trying to solve. Your courses of action are determined by your earlier choices. For example, Nick and Tony may not have taken it too kindly if you chose to run from an earlier engagement which will affect how you’ll solve a future puzzle. Moreover, the game sometimes doubles as a hidden object adventure, leaving you to ponder which items to interact with or hold. This isn’t something I find rather thrilling, but fortunately, the game has a little button you can click to check out objects you can interact with on-screen.
Community
Unusual Findings is solely a single-player game. However, the game does have a robust community online. If you’re looking for guides and walkthroughs online, you’ll easily find them scattered across the internet.
Graphics/Sound
In terms of presentation, Unusual Findings exceeds expectations. Sure, it’s a retro-style pixel art experience, but its art direction and overall aesthetic capture the timeframe it portrays. In addition, the voice acting stands out in terms of quantity and quality. It’s surprisingly a fully-voiced experience, and it captures the essence of the 80s, which brings a spectacular experience.
Conclusion
Overall, if you’re looking for a new point-and-click adventure to dive into or if you’re a fan of suspenseful horror adventures. It delivers an amazing and totally rad experience enough to keep you entertained for more than a dozen hours. Though it has some downtimes and some puzzles may be a little difficult to solve, they’re enough to keep you wanting more.
