Summary

In all the games I’ve ever played, there is nothing quite like Unheard - Voices of Crime Edition. The closest I could think of would be the Danganronpa series, but unlike this crime-solving and class-trial-esque visual novel, Unheard focuses solely on sound with little in the way of visual cues. It aimed to be unique and provide an experience never before offered in other games. And yes, it succeeded and even excelled; just be sure you have a pair of high-end earphones to fully appreciate what it offers.

The Nintendo Switch version, Unheard - Voices of Crime Edition, which this reviewer played, comes with a new case called The Lethal Script. It contains a movie industry mystery occurring at a well-known hotel in town. So, should you give this unique crime-solving puzzle adventure a shot? Let’s take a look at what it has to offer:

Plotline

Solving crimes is undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges society faces. After all, there are still countless cold cases today, and we have no idea what happened with the likes of DB Cooper or Jack the Ripper’s real identity. Some are relatively less morbid; there are financial crimes, scams, and people performing rather elaborate schemes to frame someone else.

Unheard - Voices of Crime Edition centers around a newly-made device that will let certain people called Acoustic Detectives go back in time and listen to the voices of the past. In a way, this puts eavesdropping to an all-new level but with a good purpose. With that said, the game contains a slew of scenarios, which is where most of its appeal lies. The stories appear to be standalone cases ranging from something as minor as a stolen identity but ramp up in terms of seriousness and morbidity as you progress. Soon, you’ll discover that most of them are intricately linked, and it’s up to you to discover what in the world is going on.

Gameplay

Unheard - Voices of Crime Edition requires a ton of brainpower and involves a lot of listening. You’ll be presented with several cases, and the entire gameplay works like scrolling through an internet video and listening to the suspects’ and the people involved’s conversations. You can fast-forward or rewind as you please, giving you the freedom to return to certain parts. From there, you’ll then make certain choices, identify people, and, most importantly, find the culprit and solve the case.

Apart from the rewind and fast-forward functions, you can also move to various locations to listen to whatever’s going on. It is important to note that some events and conversations happen simultaneously. For example, a couple of detectives might be interrogating someone in the other room while another suspect has a conversation with another person on the phone, blatantly admitting his culpability. Of course, he doesn’t know you’re listening in, so you’ve got yourself a pretty nice solve.

Though Unheard - Voices of Crime Edition’s scenarios aren’t what you would call difficult, you’ll need to pay lots of attention and squeeze out every ounce of comprehension power. It’s best to play the game with a pen and paper to take note of whatever is going on. Thankfully, it lets you label/name the voices, which helps in letting make sense of everything. In addition, the game occasionally puts you in a specific direction by regularly asking questions and making you answer them afterward, enabling you to sequence the events seamlessly.

Graphics/Sound

Without a sliver of a doubt, Unheard - Voices of Crime Edition’s audio design is top-notch. The voice actors deserve a lot of credit; they invoke just the right mix of emotions and sound entirely authentic. Paired with an engaging narrative, you will be in for an outstanding auditory treat. Regarding headphones, yes, it’s best to play with one to experience the game’s entire appeal.

Scenarios are presented in a top-down 2D map that looks much like a hand-drawn bird’s eye view of a crime scene. There are various rooms, and objects are clearly marked. Meanwhile, characters either take the form of circles or names. In between cases, you’ll be face to face with a faceless lady who is apparently testing your aptitude with the acoustic device. With that said, the game’s overall art design has all the makings of a thrilling murder mystery that helps things become rather tense.

Conclusion

Overall, Unheard - Voices of Crime Edition is an incredibly unique game providing a special experience you definitely need to try out. It is undoubtedly a standout title, and although you’ll find yourself wracking your brain numerous times, making a good solve and answering questions right deliver a satisfying feeling. There is simply no game like it, and it’s best to have it in your Nintendo Switch library today.
