Summary

Developed and published by Plarium, Undersea: Match & Build is among the first few titles the company has produced since its venture into the casual gaming market. The game is set in the once-thriving town of Rocky Bottom that had fallen on hard times ever since it was devastated by a passing storm. However, with your skills at solving match-3 puzzle games and Alfred the crab’s handyman skills, both of you may just be able to restore the town to its former glory.

Plotline

A terrible storm swept through the once-idyllic underwater town of Rocky Bottom, leaving it in ruins. Most of its inhabitant left to seek better fortunes elsewhere but not Alfred the crab. He is determined to rebuild Rocky Bottom and with your help, he may actually achieve it.

Gameplay

Undersea: Match & Build uses the same game design as many match-3/ building games. This basically means that you’ll need to play levels after levels of match-3 puzzle games to earn gems. Gems are then used to complete tasks. Naturally, some tasks may require more than a gem to complete.

Most tasks are done on the spot, but for some, you may still need to wait a certain duration for the work to be done. This, however, doesn’t mean that you can’t do other tasks while waiting… playing more match-3 games, for instance!

Like some of the more strategy-oriented match-3 games, Undersea: Match & Build puts a lot of emphasis on the use of power-ups. Power-ups consist of every special item that you can get by making matches of 4 shells and above. For example, matching 4 shells in a square form will get you a Rocket power-up which is very useful for clearing hard-to-reach pieces, while matching 4 shells in a row or column will earn you a Line Bomb instead. As per its name, a line bomb is able to clear entire columns or rows depending on its orientation.

Match-5s will also give you different power-ups depending on how you match them. Making a match in a T or L form will grant you a Blast Bomb that will clear all shells within a radius around it. To get the Color Bomb, on the other hand, will require you to make the match in a linear form – can be either horizontal or vertical. Swap the bomb with a neighboring shell and it will help you collect all of the same shells on the board.

However, interestingly, you can double-tap on all your power-ups to activate them as opposed to having to make a match with them or even swap them with any piece on the game board. If you do this for the Color Bomb, it will then remove all shells of a random color. Not to mention, power-ups can be combined as well to produce a much greater effect.

Every level you play will have its own objectives which you’ll need to complete, be it collecting all red starfishes or dropping lifebuoys to the bottom, along with a fixed number of moves that you can take. There are also obstacles, including but not limited to sand tiles, chained shells, and crates, that you’ll need to overcome as part of the level’s goals or just so you could complete your level objectives. You’ll get a Hard level every 10 levels or so as well.

The levels of match-3 puzzle games that you’ll be playing vary in terms of difficulty and challenge, but there’s a general theme across all of them - A wrong move may sometimes mean that you won’t be able to complete a level. Your first few moves are often most critical and if you do find yourself failing a level, make sure to change up these first few moves or you’ll be certain to fail again.

Although these levels don’t exactly reward you with stars, your performance in each game will be reflected in the number of coins you get. Every successful level will reward you with 50 coins, but if you have any extra power-ups or moves left, you can get 1 bonus coin for each one you have. However, if you do run out of moves, you can decide to spend 900 coins on 5 more moves or you could check to see if there’s a booster that you can use to help you out of your predicament.

Undersea: Match & Build offers quite a range of boosters that you can buy using coins. There are the Harpoons which functions like a Rocket except that you can actually choose which target to aim for. Alternatively, the Double Rockets booster can help you quite a bit as well by, obviously, doubling all the rockets you activate.

These boosters are rather expensive though – they are priced at 1900 coins per piece, but you do get some for free when you first started the game as well as from the game’s daily bonuses... if you’re lucky, that is. Due to this, sometimes, it might be financially wiser to simply fail the level, lose a life and start all over.

Progression in this game feels a lot satisfying than usual mainly because it’s no longer focused so much on the match-3 levels themselves but on the progress you’ve made in restoring Rocky Bottom’s many buildings piece by piece. Thus, it just doesn’t feel as “linear” as before.

Of course, the game currently has no ads whatsoever and that’s a huge plus in my (and many others’, I’m sure) books. However, this may change once the game moves out of early access and into launch.

Community

The game can be pretty social in the sense that you can connect your game account to your Facebook account just so you can pester your friends, at least those who play the game, to gift you more lives.

Graphics/ Sound

Personally, I really like the art style used in this game. It’s not actually unique, but it does look good and it’s particularly well-fitted to the overall theme and atmosphere of the game. The background music doesn’t really stand out either, but it does sound good enough for you to keep it on as you play.

Conclusion

All in all, Undersea: Match & Build is among the many brand-new match-3/building games that are on the rise, both on social gaming platforms and on mobile. In addition to the being able to see the antics of the adorable Alfred the crab, the game is also incredibly engaging and challenging. It is, in overall, a very fun game to play.
