Summary

Uncle Chop’s Rocket Shop is a spaceship repair sim-slash-roguelite where you take on the job of a repairman at a remote ship repair station after the previous repairman met with an untimely end. Earn an honest living by repairing various components of the ship based on the super handy manual you’re left with, and pay your costly rent on time to survive the next day. Upgrade your humble station to include many more facilities, allowing you to take on more complicated repair tasks that are more lucrative. Most importantly, make sure to do an accurate job – or a quick one, depending on which game mode you prefer - and keep your customers happy… you might just earn yourself a nice tip!

Plotline

Aside from the introduction where you’re depicted as a job seeker who has (finally) landed a seemingly decent job as a spaceship repairman in some remote outpost, the story here isn’t very apparent. It seems like the game expects you to unlock new parts of the story as you progress. Every death also helps push things along a bit, but only just so.

Gameplay

If you’re familiar with repair simulators in general, Uncle Chop’s Rocket Shop has all the hallmarks of one. The game expects you to really get involved in the repair process, from turning a wrench manually to remove bolts to flipping the right switches at the right order, as per the manual (thank goodness for it), to turn off a blaring alarm. Each part of the ship is made from multiple parts, and you’ll often have to check all of them in case you miss something that might require fixing.

Some issues can be simple enough, such as swapping wires so they fit their corresponding nodes, but others may require something extra, like fuel from the Fuel Station or any of the fluids from the Fluid Station. Some fixes require you to ace a mini-game or two as well.

Sometimes, a piece is missing or broken, which requires you to spend your own money in advance to buy the replacement parts before you can properly fix the problem. Ultimately, the goal is to earn enough to pay rent just so you can survive until the next rent day.

As mentioned earlier in the summary, the game comes with two game modes, namely Frantic Fixing and Focused Fixing. Frantic Fixing comes with a time limit and, as such, can have a rather frantic pace – hence the name – but there’s no limit on how many tasks you can take in a day, and the tasks are generally shallower than the other game mode.

Focused Fixing, on the other hand, focuses more on accuracy, a.k.a. correct fixing, and typically offers tasks that are more complicated to fix and have multiple issues. You are restricted to only working three tasks per day, but without the looming time limit present, you can really get into the fixing business without feeling like you’re pressed for time, which, frankly speaking, often results in shoddier work. However, the checklist you’re given here is usually rather vague so it’s still possible you may miss something. Every fix you may miss can be costly in this game mode.

As with many roguelites, the game provides upgrades that you can buy, which will persist throughout the game, making subsequent runs a lot easier the further you progress. These upgrades are crucial since the game can be very difficult to grasp. Even with the manual, you may still misunderstand instructions and the time limit. If you’re playing in Frantic Fixing mode, it isn’t really helping. However, the more you play, the better you should get at the time, making fixes even easier as you get more familiar with the many modules you have to fix.

Graphics/ Sound

Uncle Chop’s Rocket Shop features cartoonish visuals that can be a bit out of this world, likely due to its rather wacky theme. The details in each of the ship modules you get to fix are designed really well, too, and the manual, despite it being rather complicated sometimes, does a good job of illustrating and instructing the player on how to fix these modules.

In terms of sound, the game features a selection of Western-themed music that do a great job providing some atmosphere to the game without being too distracting since you’ll need all your brain power with you to fix what needs fixing. There’s no voice acting here, but the characters do speak a brand of gibberish which is helpfully translated into human language by the text dialogues.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, Uncle Chop’s Rocket Shop is an intriguing repair sim-slash-roguelite that may start out more frustrating than most since I reckon not many people enjoy reading manuals to try to fix things, but as you get more and more familiar with the many different modules you have to fix, you eventually won’t even need the manual for most of the simpler tasks. This is definitely the kind of game that may appeal to a specific niche of players, and if you happen to fall into this group of players, you’ll find Uncle Chop’s Rocket Shop to be one of the most interesting indies you may have played in a while!
