Summary

Trifox is a unique action-adventure with lots of fights and 3D platforming, where you play as a fox on a quest to retrieve the TV remote that has been stolen from you by apparently some pirates. Experience thrilling combat, platforming challenges, and even solve some puzzles as you make your way through various worlds while on the trail of the pirate captain and his crew!

Plotline

The game began with your character who is watching some TV, being excited and all. Then an explosion knocked his armchair over, with him in it! He rushed out the house to see what’s going on and spotted some thieves trying to steal some machine of his, until someone came up behind him and knocked him out cold.

When he came to (not too long after), he saw the devastation the thieves have brought to his home. His house has been ransacked; his TV has a massive hole in the middle; but the thing that made him raging mad was the fact that the thieves stole his TV remote. Enough is enough, he decided to suit up and go after the thieves in an epic adventure.

If compared to the gameplay, the story here isn’t really as appealing as the former. Told via text-less cutscenes with no voice acting, it can be hard to follow what’s really going on sometimes. I think the little cinematic bit at the very beginning of the introduction is very well done. From a brief camera span around the fox’s home, you can glean some details about your character, such as the fact that both his parents have died.

Gameplay

After completing the tutorial, which teaches you all the basics, you’ll then be asked to choose one of three classes, namely the warrior, the mage, and the engineer. As you might already expect, the main difference between the three is their respective combat styles. The warrior offers a more Souls-like playstyle, requiring you to time your blows and dash out of the way when necessary while the mage will have you playing the game like you’re playing a twin-stick shooter, kiting enemies left and right. The engineer, on the other hand, relies a lot more on his gadgets and machines which deal damage automatically to defeat his enemies.

Know that once you’ve decided on a class, there’s no going back, short of starting a new game, so choose wisely. That said, some players might want to experience all three classes in three separate playthroughs just because of how different they all are.

Each class also has their own set of skill tree with various abilities that you can unlock by spending the coins you’ve picked up while playing a level. The abilities are grouped into 3 tiers and you’ll need to unlock all the abilities in the previous tier before you can access the, next one. Interestingly, you are allowed to mix and match the abilities across classes, giving players the freedom to really experiment and create the build that they want; a build that fits their playstyle better.

I should also point out that all the abilities here are also designed in a way that discourages mindless spamming. There’s even a limit imposed on the number of times you can dash/teleport/fly consecutively, requiring you to wait for the ability to recharge before you can use it again.

For an action-adventure game like Trifox where 3D platforming is a critical aspect of it, the controls are very important. In this game, you can jump, double jump, dash/teleport/fly (for a short distance), and a combination of the previous three just to navigate the different platforming challenges in the game. However, if you’re using Dash (the warrior’s ability), you might find it very hard to know where you’ll end up, making it very easy to overshot the platform, especially one with a very narrow top, you’re aiming for. This can make some of the jumping challenges quite frustrating to complete.

Trifox is also a game that likes its fights. The game tends to send multiple enemies at you, swarms even if they are the weaker variation, requiring you to position yourself right just so you don’t get overwhelmed from all sides. The enemy variety here is really well-done too. You won’t feel as though you’re simply fighting the same kinds of enemies, albeit a reskinned one, throughout all the different worlds.

The boss fights are all quite interesting too. You really have to learn their respective attack patterns so you can find the right opening to get some hits in without taking too much damage. That being said, if you do die in this game, know that the game won’t force you to start the level from the very beginning. Instead, you’ll be respawned at the nearest checkpoint (auto)save and can continue on with a full health bar.

In a sense, the game is quite forgiving of mistakes and lets you attempt whatever that you’ve failed at, be it a particularly challenging boss fight or a platforming challenge, again and again until you finally get through it.

In addition to fights, the game comes with some light puzzles too, mostly requiring you to stand or put something on buttons to keep the door open or moving pillars to just the right height so you can jump your way to a cliff at the top. There are plenty of traps as well that you’ll do well to avoid.

For an action-adventure game that doesn’t offer open worlds, Trifiox is a sizeable – in terms of its length – game, offering three worlds, each with three levels and a final boss fight to complete. Besides fights, puzzles, and platforming challenges, each level also comes with plenty of secret areas that could take a while to find. These areas typically contain a treasure chest containing the valuable collectible, the blue gem. This ensures that the player will want to replay the game just to “find them all”.

Graphics/ Sound

Trifox, like most action-adventure games, features vibrant low-poly graphics that gorgeous to look at. In line with the times, the game also has plenty of comic book-style effects and highly stylized art, which gives the game a bit of a cartoonish feel. In terms of music, both soundtrack and effects are perfectly matched with the theme and the action that’s going on on-screen. Every hit feels satisfying here, whether you are smashing crates and barrels or whacking the hell out of the final boss.

Conclusion

Featuring vibrant colors and graphics, Trifox is a short but fun action-adventure game that’s infused with elements from 3D platformers that comes with a bit of an interesting twist when combat is involved. Depending on the class you choose, you’ll get to experience the game in a different way due to how differently they all function. Uniquely enough, the game also allows you to mix and match abilities from different classes, giving you some amount of freedom to create the build that fits your playstyle. All of this makes this game quite the memorable title.

So, if you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind action-adventure game that’s inspired by all the great 3D platformers with fights that get increasingly more challenging as you progress, Trifox is the game you’ll want to play!
