Summary

Unlike many other war-themed games, This War of Mine lets you experience the devastating effects of war from the eyes of the average civilian who’s struggling to make do with he/she has and can obtain… sometimes through whatever means necessary… just to survive, and not while playing as the macho elite soldier who’s “destined” to save the day. Like real people, the characters you play will suffer mental and emotional breakdowns as a consequence of the harsh environment they are in and the things they may be forced to do, just so they might stay alive long enough to see the war come to an end.

Plotline

Set in an unnamed war-torn country, This War of Mine lets you uncover story snippets about each of the survivors you recruit to your shelter. You’ll learn about their backgrounds and why they act the way they do in current time – they, like real people, are shaped by their past and their present. There are also other stories that you’ll gain access to if you purchase the game’s Stories DLC.

I don’t want to spoil any of the story here, so I won’t. You’ll just have to discover them as you play the game!

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, This War of Mine has two main aspects that are split between day time and night time. During the day, your characters would be mostly at home, well-sheltered from the watchful gaze of snipers who’ll shoot anything, or anyone, that moves. This is where you’ll be doing all of your crafting and building.

The game provides you with several different crafting stations to build, all of which can be upgraded to unlock new and oftentimes, better crafting options. There is also furniture that you can build just so the roof your characters live under might just feel a bit like home. Note that many of these furniture items aren’t just for show; mere décor. The bed, for instance, is crucial to help prevent your people from succumbing to fatigue and even to help slightly accelerate recovery from minor sicknesses or wounds.

Everything you can craft or build require specific materials and you’ll need to get most of them by scavenging various locations around the map, by trading with other survivors, or by stealing them from other people, some of which might not take too kindly to your theft and will react accordingly, during the night.

After the sun sets, you’ll be given a choice as to who to send on the scavenging mission and where to scavenge; who can grab a bit of sleep; and who to stay on guard throughout the night to chase away any looters bold enough to target your home.

The scavenging part of the gameplay is pretty much stealth-oriented since most of the time, you’ll be essentially be trespassing on other survivors’ turf and stealing from them. There are also obstacles that you may need to clear away and locked cabinets to open so you’ll want to bring the necessary tools that you can craft… though not all of them because you only have so much inventory space and you’ll still need to lug your loot back home.

Not all survivors are helpless in this game, though you may encounter some who will try to scare you away or warn you rather than attack you on sight. There are even some, such as traders, who’ll be glad to see you, but of course, if they caught you stealing their stuff, they would quickly turn hostile and you wouldn’t like it when they are angry.

Not to mention, This War of Mine also delves into the trickier parts of the effects of war… the psychological effects. The characters in this game are very human, not only in the sense that they have their own unique personalities, but that they can “feel” and their emotions will affect their overall well-being.

What this means is that the stuff you ask them to do, whether is it to murder someone who’s just trying to defend their home from an intruder – you! – or cleaning out the home of a helpless elderly couple, leaving nothing behind for them to survive on, comes with consequences… and sometimes, those consequences can be pretty severe. After all, humans can only take so much emotional stress and when they are broken, they will become listless.

That’s not including the challenge that weather can pose, such as the bitter winter, and the strife that war can cause, which may unfortunately end up crashing down your door. This War of Mine can have a bit of a learning curve, but once you know what to expect, you can prepare for it way ahead in advance, giving you a much higher chance of seeing all of your characters through to the very end of the game.

Now, what’s different between the original This War of Mine and this Final Cut version, you may wonder? Well, for starters, all the new locations introduced in the Stories DLC are now added to the base game. You’ll still have to purchase the Stories DLC to access the extra stories, but at least, you can explore the locations the stories are set in, even if you don’t own the DLC. Besides several other minor tweaks and changes, the other locations had a revamp as well, plus, there’s a new character added to the game.

Community

This War of Mine has always been a single-player experience and it has remained so. However, if you’d like to discuss the game with your fellow players, know that the game has a Steam forum/ discussion board where you can do just that.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics and the art in this game are fantastically on-point. Combined with the sounds of war in the distance, they manage to create an immersive environment that just pulls you right in, making the game feels so frighteningly real.

Conclusion

Without a doubt, This War of Mine is a masterpiece in its own right. Not only did the game handled a sensitive topic like the harsh realities of war masterfully, it also manages to shift the focus away from the soldiers themselves and point the camera at the common folk; the true casualties of war, and what some of them may have had to do in the name of survival.
