Summary

The Walking Zombie 2 is a free-to-play zombie-themed arcade/casual-like FPS, where you’ll get explore a world infested with all manner of zombies, complete quests for your fellow survivors, and level up your character so he can be the “Chosen One” that he is meant to be.

Plotline

Before we get into the plotline, you should know that the story in The Walking Zombie 2 is whimsically-cringy and it doesn’t take itself seriously. So, if you think the story is “bad”, well… know that it’s completely intentional.

Now, the game begins with a story introduction where a group of survivors are trying to help a mother who’s in labor give birth. However, the twist here is that the mother herself has been bitten by a zombie and is infected but not yet turned. The delivery ended up being pretty successful – she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, but unfortunately, in their joy, they forgot to kill the infected mother and she turned on her once fellow friends.

Not to mention, the cries of the baby and of the mother, while she was in labor, have also attracted a horde of zombies that rapidly converged in their area. Most survivors died there but thankfully, the cowboy/sheriff managed to escape with the baby.

Fast forward 20 years, the baby boy grew up to be a young man who apparently didn’t make much of himself… and guess what? You get to control this guy.

Gameplay

The Walking Zombie 2 is a fairly straightforward game. Here, you’ll need to complete quests, kill zombies, earn coins, spend them at the vendor to buy the best gear for your character, and rinse and repeat.

Quests can be picked up by talking to the many survivors around the base camp. Most quests involve scavenging items or clearing an area of zombies and, honestly, they can get a bit repetitive after a while, especially once you realize that unlocking a new location can take some time. However, the game does try to spice things up with the occasional unique quests as well as random encounters that you’ll get while traveling to and from a location.

The type of random encounters in this game, as well as the missions and the dialogues you get, are dependent on this thing called Karma. Based on your dialogue choices in certain conversations, you’ll either gain or lose Karma – choices that will affect your Karma are clearly indicated, so make sure you read the dialogues you’re given.

As a freemium game, The Walking Zombie 2 does have an “energy system” in place to slow down a player’s progress, but instead of energy, the limiting resource here is gas. You’ll need gas to travel anywhere in the map, which you’ll need to do in order to be able to kill zombies, earn experience points and coins, as well as collect some loot.

The game does give you quite a bit of gas to start you off, allowing you to just blaze through the game’s early content, and you can even get some more gas by collecting your daily free gas via the in-game store. Plus, if you really want to save on gas, you can try to take and complete all missions you have in your log in a single trip and then turn them all in.

Now, the main aspect of its gameplay besides the constant stream of missions, is the all the zombie-shooting you’ll get to do. In addition to the few roaming zombies, combat in this game is primarily waves-based. Besides being well-varied, the zombies have levels here as well so the zombies you’ll face at level 10 will definitely have a lot more health than when you first started. This means that your equipment needs to keep pace with your level.

In Walking Zombie 2, you can equip up to 4 pieces of armor, 2 types of weapons and 2 consumables, though you can technically bring along a lot more items if you want. However, unlike many other games that you might have played, ammo is a limited supply in this game. So, unless you have a lot of game currency to spend buying more ammo at the trader, you might want to try aiming for the headshots just to get that sweet triple damage and save a ton of bullets. Thankfully, the items in this game don’t have durability so you don’t have to keep buying or looting new weapons.

I also love the character progression in this game. By leveling up, you’ll get skill points to invest into skills you may need. At certain level milestones, you’ll also gain a perk point which you can then spend to acquire a permanent perk for your character. So essentially, this allows you to slowly mold your default character into a character that suit your play style.

Of course, as a freemium game, there are lots of stuff that you can buy in its in-game store in exchange with real cash or premium currency. The PC version even has a special pack that will basically give you unlimited gas so there’s no limit as to how long you’d like to play, but the game retains its F2P-style grind which might be a good trade-off depending on who you ask.

Community

The Walking Zombie 2 is a single-player experience and it doesn’t seem to offer either co-op mode or multiplayer. There’s no guild system here as well.

Graphics/ Sound

The low poly graphics in this game is amazing. The characters are very lovingly designed and the environments are all very beautifully built. The music is pretty good too. Depending on where you are and what you’re doing, the background music really helps to set the scene, further immersing you into the game’s zombie-infested world.

Conclusion

If you love mindlessly shooting at zombies… arcade-style, The Walking Zombie 2 is definitely a game for you! The gameplay here is incredibly-addictive despite being somewhat repetitive, and its quirky story does take the edge away from the usual dread of a post-apocalyptic themed game, giving you a nice chuckle from time to time. Its progression is pretty well-paced so you won’t feel the grind as much.

Being a freemium game, there are also plenty of in-game items that you can buy to make surviving in this game a lot easier, but know that none of the items are really necessary if you’re willing to put in the effort and the hours.
