The Survivalists is a survival-themed adventure game focusing on exploring a vast archipelago filled with hidden secrets and treasures as well as mysterious temples and dangerous terrains. The goal here is not only to make a life for yourself by recruiting and training the local monkeys to help with your many mundane chores, but to find a way to crack the mystery shrouding the archipelago and possibly find a way to finally escape!
The game surprisingly doesn’t start with a whole lot of backstory. However, as you explore the place, you may find logs of survivalists before you, who may or may not have made it off the islands, as well as relics of the modern world.
The Survivalists has a sandbox-style, survival-themed gameplay, which means that you’re expected to gather plenty of resources from the environment, use them to build a base of operations… or even multiple outposts and bases… and make sure you’ve got plenty of protection ready for when the local hostile tribesmen attack you, which they do from time to time.
The map here is simply amazing and if you just love exploring, you’ll find the island-hopping experience here pretty satisfying… that is once you’ve got your raft built. Of course, being set in the tropics, there isn’t a whole lot of different biomes to discover, though there are volcanic and swampy areas that are more dangerous than the normal terrain. Even the sea contains dangers and you’ll do well to avoid the ravenous sharks that are looking for an easy meal.
The game isn’t a true survival game per se mainly because there aren’t factors like the hunger meter or temperature to worry about. Instead, you’ve got a health meter and that’s your main concern throughout the game – don’t die! There’s also a stamina meter but since it regenerates pretty quickly and the only time you’ll notice you don’t have enough of it is mostly when you’re battling enemies or gathering some resources manually.
The best and most interesting part about The Survivalists that really help it stands out from all the other generic sandbox survival games is the fact that you can “recruit” monkeys on the island to help you with any mundane tasks. This encompasses all tasks that can be easily replicated by the monkeys. After all, monkey see, monkey do!
Monkeys that learn a certain skill can then improve on said skill by using it often, much like humans do really. In this game, you can basically train a monkey to become a master craftsman or a cook if you want to! There doesn’t seem to be a limit as to how many monkeys you can have in your monkey army but if you want to play the game in co-op mode, then know that you can only bring along 5 of your best monkeys.
That being said, training your monkeys is, unfortunately, also the most frustrating part about the game. Unlike games with macros, you can’t really save the tasks you’ve taught your monkey as general macros that you can then use whenever you need the same tasks done some time in the future. Instead, every time you need your monkeys to do something, you’ll have to teach it all over again… which frankly speaking is very annoying. It’s probably much better for the game if there’s like a hotbar of maybe 4 to 6 common tasks that the player can save for all monkeys and select whenever needed.
There’s also the issue where monkeys will get themselves stuck in the middle of the ocean after trying to flee from hostiles on land. The monkeys will stack upon one another when entering enclosed spaces as well, making it nigh impossible to assign tasks to individual monkeys, but this issue can be easily resolved simply by finding an open area and trying again.
The Survivalists can be played in two ways – single-player or co-op. For co-op, you can band up with your friends and help each other battle enemies and escape from the archipelago. However, as mentioned, for co-op, the game only lets you bring along 5 of your army of monkeys so you’ll want to put a star on the 5 most useful monkeys you’ll want to bring.
The graphics here aren’t too shabby and it do fit the theme of the game really well. However, there are times when I thought that the game reuses some of the assets a tad bit too much, such as shipwrecks. They all look the same. The music is pretty great here though I wouldn’t say it’s something that I’d shout about. It works and that’s all the matters.
All in all, The Survivalists is as addictively fun as it looks. Being a survival-themed sandbox adventure, there are plenty of stuff you can craft, items to gather, loyal monkeys to train, and bases to set up as you slowly and steadily explore every inch of the massive archipelago. However, the game isn’t without its flaws and I personally think that the game could have made the monkey-training part a bit more convenient and less annoying for the player. That said, The Survivalists is still a game that I would highly recommend to avid fans of midcore survival games.
