Summary
Tap! Dig! My Museum is a fun and addictive idle game where you’ll get to go on expeditions to dig for dinosaur bones and return to your own museum to reconstruct the fossils. Populate your museum with fossils to attract visitors and earn more cash; cash that you’ll then need to reinvest into your archeological expeditions or to expand your museum.
Gameplay
Tap! Dig! My Museum is a really simple game to get into simply because the gameplay is easy enough to grasp. In this game, you’ll need to set off on archeological expeditions across the map to dig for dinosaur bones which you will then need to bring back to your museum and reassemble them into the magnificent dinosaur skeleton that they were, just so you can attract more visitors, and hence, earn more money. It’s a simple cycle, really.
However, surprisingly enough for an idle-like game, Tap! Dig! My Museum has some nuances that made it unique. Aside from the one-of-a-kind theme, this game has a pretty interesting digging mechanism.
It’s not at all voxel-based like in Minecraft where the ores in each voxel is pretty much clearly shown. The bones you find can be quite difficult to spot even if you’re digging in the right spot. Plus, as you progress, the game will introduce stone tiles which are much harder to break or provide an excavation site that is multiple-layers deep.
Thankfully, the game also adds in an upgrade system that allows you to improve your archeological team’s digging skills (more digs per excavation), as well as giving the amount of cash you earn a nice, permanent boost. The digging skill upgrades are crucial if you want to save some time and cash when heading off on these archeological expeditions because the upgrades will let you dig more tiles at a time and dig more often per expedition.
Note that even with maxed upgrades, you will still find yourself needing to “watch a video ad”, which is exactly what the game developers seem to want you to do, just so you could have enough moves to excavate all the bones (up to 2 bones per expedition) on the site. You should also know that the excavation site is refreshed every time you head there so you can’t “continue where you left off”. This is possibly the only major downside of the game. The pressure to watch a video ad is very real here during these expeditions.
Not to mention, there are just so many dinosaur fossils you can excavate, reassemble and then display in your museum. In fact, there are so many more fossils than displays, you may be forced to “store” some of your completed fossils, just to make way for new fossils. The game can be played pretty much endlessly once you reach a point where you can earn a steady amount of cash simply by going off on expeditions and returning to collect your earnings, making it really easy to “complete” the game. However, the developers will definitely be adding in more fossils and possibly more rooms/displays for your museum. Currently, the game has 16 fossils for you to reconstruct.
As mentioned, the main monetization method in this game is through video ads. You can watch a video ad to get extra digs per expedition, or you can also get a rush of visitors to your museum, so you could earn a bit more cash.
Community
Dig! Tap! My Museum provides a solitary game experience like most idle games do. However, the game does let you take pictures of your museum set-up and share the pictures with your friends and family.
Graphics/ Sound
What I really liked about the game is how amazingly-detailed the fully-reassembled dinosaur skeletons look. Granted that they are enveloped in an unnecessary golden glow, the skeletons do look magnificent, and this is the driving force for me to want to excavate all the other dinosaur bones as well. The music in this game is fun and catchy, and it fits well with the casual theme of the game.
Conclusion
All in all, Dig! Tap! My Museum manages to provide a much refreshing change to the whole slew of generic idle games on the mobile market. Aside from the unique theme, the gameplay is also fun yet challenging, especially if you want to find both bones in each of your excavations.
However, the game does have 1 major flaw – it can be quite persistent when asking you to watch a video ad in order to get some benefits. It’s got so bad, to the point where I’d go as far as to say that they intentionally build the game around this little monetization idea.
Still, if you don’t mind watching video ads to play free games as much, Dig! Tap! My Museum is a pretty fun mobile game to play. Download for free!
