If you’re expecting the typical word puzzle gameplay, you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise! The game combines elements from a typical crossword puzzle with the popular word-unscrambler format while bringing something new to the table – instead of assembling letters to form the words you need to solve each crossword clue, you’ll need to combine different syllables, all of which are provided at the bottom of the screen.

There are no one-syllable answers here though - many of the solutions require two or more (up to four!) syllables. That being said, most of the puzzles here are easy enough, especially if you’re already a huge fan of solving crossword puzzles. Many of the clues given may even sound familiar to you. However, there’s a little catch – some of the clues given might be designed more for the US audience, giving players from the US a bit of an advantage… not that this is a competitive game, of course.

Although the game doesn’t provide you with additional hints aside from the crossword-style clues, it does offer the player a handy Shuffle button that allows you to jumble up the bunch of syllables given to hopefully spot a word that you may have missed. There’s also a Clear Answer button that is helpful in case you’ve entered your answer for the wrong clue – stuff happens, we know!

Syllacrostic is also quite a hefty game. It comes with 225 puzzles that are segmented into 15 neatly-packaged, 15-puzzle puzzle packs, with each pack containing a mix of puzzles of varying difficulties. Each of the puzzles in this game can be accessed straight from the get-go. There’s no need to complete the previous puzzle to unlock the next one, and you can have all the time you need to mull over the answers before returning to the puzzle to take another crack at it.

However, there’s one thing to note – the game doesn’t save your progress in each puzzle unless you completely solve the entire puzzle. So, if you filled in a few answers and exited from the puzzle, you will have to fill those answers in again.

As you complete the puzzle packs, you’ll gradually start filling in your desert, which you can access via the button at the bottom of the puzzle pack screen, with a variety of items, ranging from cacti to horses. The décor you get depends on the pack you solved. For instance, solving the Flower pack will add flowers – those desert-hardy ones, of course – to your desert.

To add to the game’s replayability, it comes with daily puzzles that feature puzzles that aren’t in any of the puzzle packs in the main game. Plus, these dailies are all timed. This means that you could technically compete with your friends by comparing how fast you’ve managed to solve today’s daily puzzle. Naturally, you won’t be able to replay the daily to get a better time – it would defeat the purpose of having a time stamp there in the first place!

As a free-to-play, the game also offers a great brain workout at zero cost, plus the ads in the game are unobtrusive and small – there are no full-page or video ads, or even pop-ups here.

Community

As mentioned above, although the game isn’t competitive per se, there’s a way you could technically compete with your friends, that is by trying to best each other’s time on the daily puzzle.

Graphics/ Sound

Syllacrostic, like most puzzle games, is minimalistic in design. The icons that will float around in your desert once you’ve completed the corresponding puzzle packs look clean and clear-cut. The game doesn’t feature any soundtrack which is good and all since it’s not really necessary for a puzzle game where the highlight and focus of the game should be on the puzzles themselves.

If you’re a fan of word puzzles, especially crosswords, Syllacrostic is one puzzle game you don’t want to miss! Not only does it test your vocabulary, like most word puzzle games do, but you’ll also be tested on the meaning of the words themselves since you’ll need to know the answers to the clues given.
