Supercar Showdown is, in essence, a very simple game. Thus, the game doesn’t provide any tutorial to guide you. However, for people, who have never played a top-down, arcade-like racing game before, you might need a few moments to understand how the game works.
The game starts off by prompting you to choose the type of controls you prefer, either using your mouse or the WASD or arrow keys. If you’re an absolute beginner in this sort of games, it might be best for you to try out the recommended controls – the mouse – first. This is because using arrow or WASD keys can be a bit confusing since the tracks twists and turns around while you’re looking at your car from a top-down view. So, sometimes, you may get confused with the left and right keys. However, using the mouse to play isn’t a walk in the park either! Unless you have a steady hand, you may find yourself crashing into barriers or into other people’s cars while racing. Oh, and you’ll need to hold onto your left mouse button the entire race to accelerate your car too!
As hinted in the previous paragraph, the cars in Supercar Showdown can get damaged as well as crash and explode into flames! Your car has a “health bar” that is only shown when you hit something that damages your car. The “something” can be the barrier on both sides of the track, an obstacle or even other players’ cars.
Supercar Showdown offers quite a range of obstacles, or hazards, as the game calls them, that will damage or slow down your or anyone else’s car. Some examples include danger wall that usually splits a track into 2 narrow lanes, speed bumps, wrecking ball and also a variety of tesla hazards like tesla wall, tesla curve and tesla tower that gives out random electricity shocks to briefly stun nearby vehicles.
Once your car’s health dropped to 0, your car will explode into a charred hunk of metal. Thankfully though, the game allows you to respawn on the spot you’ve crashed and get back into the race after the explosion animation played out, which will take a few, very precious seconds. So, if possible, do try not to crash your car!
However, you can use the action of slamming into your opponents’ cars to slow them as a racing strategy, provided that you’re confident you can snag that repair spanner boost before everyone else! There are 4 types of boosts that will spawn on their allocated spots on the track. Besides the repair spanner that repairs car to 25% max strength, you’ll also get turbo boost, which will boost your car speed to 150% for 2 seconds (every seconds count!). There is even an EMP shield boost that protects car from tesla hazards and stuns opponents and a laser target which allows you to use an orbital laser that automatically targets the leading cars (based on position).
Besides these boosts, some tracks also have helpful turbo pads or boost ramps on the road. Drive over them to give your car a nice and very much welcomed speed boost! You can also automatically use your car’s in-built turbo boost by merely driving in a straight line. However, you have limited fuel for these boosts, and once depleted, you’ll need to refuel it by purchasing fuel.
Once you’ve won the race, you’ll win some in-game cash, a custom pimping item for your car along with a free wheel of fortune, Spin 2 Win, chance. If you get second or third place instead, you’ll only win in-game cash. You’ll also unlock new race tracks and the multiplayer option for the previous track by winning. The game offers 4 different locations, namely stadium, turbo plex, wrecker and driftway, with around 4 different and very challenging tracks each. Although the game may seem simplistic, the tracks in this game can be devilishly challenging at times. You should expect plenty of twists and turns. Some tracks, like turbo plex and driftway, are night mode only as well and the road will be nicely lit up with lights.
What can you do with the in-game cash you’ve earned? Well, to find out, you’ll need to head over to your garage! You can choose to tune or pimp up your current car, or buy a new car that was already unlocked by winning races. For tuning, you can buy up to 5 total upgrade points per car and distribute them in any of your vehicle’s base car stats, namely steering, speed and strength. Putting points into steering improves car cornering and drift speed, while if you put them in speed, you’ll increase your car’s maximum speed. Increasing strength will increase car chassis health, so your car will be able to take more damage before exploding.
You can also pimp up your vehicles by adding custom tires, lights, sirens and turbo. These custom options are only unlocked if you can win first place in either game modes (single player or multiplayer) or you win it at the wheel of fortune (called Spin 2 Win). There are 2 other preset designs that you can unlock as well by leveling up your car or winning multiplayer matches. You can also buy new cars at the garage, but you’ll first need to unlock these cars by winning races. Once unlocked, you’ll then need to shell over quite an amount of in-game cash to buy the car itself.
Supercar Showdown has a small but closely knit community of arcade racers on Facebook. The game has around 10 thousand active players per month and that’s not including the thousands more on Miniclip’s own website. Currently, short of racing in multiplayer or heading over to the game’s “official” site on Miniclip.com, there is no way for you to meet the members of game’s community though.
The graphics in Supercar Showdown are pretty good in fact. The tracks are very well-designed and visualized, so are the many supercars that you can unlock and buy. In terms of music, the techno music in the game has some amazing beats. It does oddly sound like the techno music behind Psy’s Gentlemen music. Nonetheless, the sound really gets your heart racing before you even start to race! The sound effects of your and other players’ cars, particularly the sound of tires squealing on tar-covered roads while drifting or the roar of the engines, in the game are generally okay as well!
In summary, Supercar Showdown is a free-to-play, top-down arcade racing game that is simple to learn but challenging to master. Take on both AI and human challengers and defeat them all on the many layouts of tracks in the game! Tune your car up to give you that edge you need to defeat the competition and if you want to look cool while leaving everyone else biting your car’s dusts, feel free to spend a bit of the cash you’ve earned to pimp your car up as well! Unlock new cars by winning races and be sure to remember to buy them once you have enough money too. So, don’t wait! Sign up now and show them all what you’ve got in Supercar Showdown!
