Summary

Do you love card auto card battler games like Hearthstone Battlegrounds? What about mythical creatures and fairy tale characters? If your answer is yes to both, then Storybook Brawl is definitely the game you should try! In this game, you play as a ‘hero’ based on fairy tales and myths, such as Loki, Dracula, the Big Bad Wolf and even Santa Claus. Then you will recruit and assemble your team of creatures and characters, and be pitted against 7 other heroes and their team, where all will face off in 1v1 rounds with the goal to be the last one standing. Choosing the strongest minions is not enough in this game, cunning strategy and powerful synergies are critical to overpower your opponents and win the game!

Plotline

Storybook Brawl is a card based auto-battler with fairy tale and fantasy themes, where the Good and Evil compete as you assemble your team of fairytale characters and creatures, be it a dwarf, mystical animal or even an evil princess, to fight against your opponents.

Gameplay

At the very beginning of the game, you are required to pick a hero out of 4 choices given. However, there is a catch here – only the first two heroes are free, while you can use fairy dusts (rewarded when you win games) or gems (purchasable with real money) to permanently unlock the other two. Each hero has his or her or its own unique ability, in which you have to plan and strategize your team around that ability in order to be last one standing among the other 7 opponents. Once you picked a hero, there is no turning back until the brawl ends or you quit or concede. For a bot game, if your RNG is not good, or none of the four heroes do not appeal to you at all, you can just quit and restart the game.

Once you have selected your desired hero, you will move into the first phase of the brawl round, i.e. recruit phase. In the recruit phase, you will be given a pool of gold, starting with two gold in the first round, and an increment of one gold in subsequent rounds. With this gold, you buy or recruit characters or minions to help you fight in the next phase. The minions are organized into two lines – four slots at the front line, and three slots at the back line. Hence, you can only have a maximum of seven minions to fight for you in every round. The minions will fight the opponent starting from left to right, and front to back. Do note that if you do not completely use up the gold, it will be forfeited and not brought into the next round.

As you can guess, like most auto card battler games, positioning and synergy between characters are the key strategy to win in Storybook Brawl. Different minions have different alignment, i.e. good, neutral or evil, and different abilities. Hence, there are tons of different synergies that you can try out, and some are stronger at different stages of the game. For example, if you have a strong ‘good’ minion that buffs other ‘good’ minions, then your team should comprise mostly of ‘good’ minions to benefit from this buff. However, it is not good to be too possessive in this game, as you must be ready to let go your current synergy to adopt a better one if you have an opportunity to do so. Your opponents are ever evolving their deck and so must you!

Other than minions, each draft will have a spell that you can purchase in the recruit phase. However, normally only one spell can be purchased each round, but this can be changed by certain hero’s ability or the spell itself. These spells can be in the form of a buff to your characters for a single round, or a permanent buff, or some form of reward if you win the round. Some of these spells are very powerful and can be game changers, especially those that are able to synergize with your team. Other than spells, you can also get treasures when you complete quests of certain characters that offer them. For example, a Brave Princess character will offer a choice of three treasures to pick from if she slays three enemies. These treasures are usually very powerful and can tip the scales of balance to your favor.

When you have finished strategizing, you will click on the ‘BRAWL!’ button and start the combat phase. In this phase, your assembled team will be pitted against an opponent hero’s team out of the seven. All you have to do at this point, is to sit back and watch the brawl play out, maybe with your fingers crossed for better RNG. Regardless of whether you win or lose the round, you will gain some EXP points and your hero will level up at every three rounds. With higher level, comes more powerful characters to choose from in the recruit phase. The current maximum level is six, and at this level, you can get insanely powerful characters, spells and treasures.

Community

Once you gotten the hang of the gameplay mechanics, or just got tired of steamrolling your AI opponents, it is time to bring your game to a more challenging stage, i.e. to fight against other human players. Although being a very new game, the player base is already quite large, as the queue time is quite short, which takes around 30 seconds to a minute. The entire game then plays out the same, except you have a countdown timer of 1 minute during the recruit phase. However, this timer grows longer up to almost 2 minutes as you progress to later rounds in the game. That is a good adjustment, as you obviously need more time to think as your synergies get more complicated when the characters get stronger!

Graphics/ Sound

Storybook Brawl, as suggested by the name of the game, strongly revolves around the fairy tale theme which comes with charming artwork and mysterious background music. The game is essentially something we would expect to see if we open a storybook. There are also hidden jokes and puns in the game that serve as comic relief in the game. For example, the game features Snow White’s evil alter ego named Princess Wight, who is buffed when dwarves die. On the other hand, for those who are not so familiar with card games, or auto battler games, the game mechanics might be a bit hard to grasp at first. The developers have provided a YouTube video tutorial for this, but if it could be better if tutorial is incorporated into the game itself, as a more hands-on approach. Otherwise, players can more or less get the hang of it after messing around in two or three games.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, Storybook Brawl is a new aspiring game that sets to be the next best auto card battler. With its charming fairy tale theme and familiar characters, it is sure to be a favorite among the young and adults alike. At this point of time, the game is free to play and is still in its early access stage on Steam, so don’t hesitate and dive into the game now to experience fairy tales in a different way!
