Summary

STAR WARS™: Battlefront Classic Collection is a remastered version of the classics STAR WARS™: Battlefront and STAR WARS™: Battlefront II released back in 2004 and 2005 respectively. Dive into massive epic battles in space and on various planets in the Star Wars universe either as a clone serving under the Republic or a battle droid fighting for the Confederacy during the Clone Wars era, or as the Rebel Alliance or Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War era. Capture important CPs, take out enemy leaders and ships, and retrieve crucial items, all in a bid to win the battle for your team!

Plotline

Although both games lack the traditional single-player story campaign, there are plenty of cutscenes lifted from the many Star Wars movies, namely STAR WARS Episodes I-VI, to prelude each battle you’ll head into. The games are also set during the Clone Wars era and subsequently, the Galactic Civil War era, so you’ll get to play for either side of the conflict, be it the Galactic Republic or the Confederacy of Independent Systems; or be it the Rebel Alliance or Galactic Empire.

Unlike STAR WARS™: Battlefront, which features large-scale battles of all kinds, the sequel will have you play as a soldier in Darth Vader’s elite 501st Legion of Stormtroopers. You’ll get to see action on multiple battlefronts as the notoriety of the 501st battalion grows.

Gameplay

The STAR WARS™: Battlefront game franchise is a first-person shooter with a focus on large-scale battles. Due to this, the game is mainly designed for multiplayer play, offering players the chance to work with others to complete whatever objectives needed of them to win the battle.

Not every player plays as the same unit type here. Prior to spawning into the battlefield, you’ll get to choose your character loadout and the location in which you want to spawn. However, sometimes, you don’t get to choose where to spawn since your team only controls one CP, a.k.a. command post at the start of a battle. This will usually change as your team pushes forward and captures CPs controlled by the enemy.

There are many different unit types that you can spawn as. Although you get to play either side of the conflict, the unit types are pretty much similar. There are the troopers, who are your typical grunt soldiers in the army, and there are more specialized units like the heavies who are equipped with rocket launchers, sharpshooters, who are the snipers in the group; and engineers who have the ability to repair crucial supporting structures and vehicles. You can even play as a droideka.

Every unit you have access to is directly available in STAR WARS™: Battlefront while, in its sequel, you’ll get to unlock more character classes, such as the jet-pack-wearing trooper and the commander. From time to time, you’ll be presented with the option to play as a Jedi, too!

Ammo and consumables like grenades are limited in these games, and there are no health packs that you can carry around with you to restore health. Thankfully, you can easily restore your ammo and grenades by standing near to an ammunition droid while you can replenish health by standing near to a healing droid. Due to this as well, these droids can be strategically destroyed if the case calls for it. After all, if your team needs the droids back in action, you could easily get an engineer to repair them.

Friendly fire is a thing here, and although it can be funny to shoot your buddies in the back, you might want to keep the goofing off down to a minimum if you plan on winning the battle. After all, despite being able to respawn again and again after dying, there’s a respawn limit that is determined by how many CP your team is holding.

Of course, true to the originals, you’ll get to pilot a huge variety of vehicles and spacecraft in this collection of games, ranging from the iconic X-wings to speeder bikes. That being said, you only get to dive into some special dogfights in space in the sequel since that’s when this new gameplay feature was introduced.

Aside from the campaigns, the games also come with a more narrative-driven Galactic Conquest mode that features turn-based strategy gameplay where players battle for control of the galaxy, and a Hero Assault mode (a.k.a. Heroes vs Villains) where players battle each other by playing as heroes from their respective side on the fight. The Classic Collection expands the Hero Assault mode, allowing this mode to be playable on all ground-based maps, and adding more heroes and villains to the roster.

This classic collection version doesn’t only remastered the games by giving them a more polished look, but it also comes with achievements and some bonus content, including a new bonus map, Jabba’s Palace, for STAR WARS™: Battlefront, along with Bespin: Cloud City, Rhen Var: Harbor, Rhen Var: Citadel, and Yavin 4: Arena for STAR WARS™: Battlefront II. In the sequel, you’ll even get new heroes to play as well, namely Asajj Ventress and Kit Fisto.

Community

For a Star Wars game franchise that’s famous for epic multiplayer battles, this remastered version didn’t live up to its name despite touting its support for up to 64 players. Many players have complained about the lack of servers, which is shocking considering that the original versions of both Battlefront games that are on Steam also have a lot more available servers to play in.

Even if players could join a game, the game itself could be broken, such as the Heroes vs Villains match where no one was able to join the Heroes’ side. There have also been reports of horrible ping, and stuttering that resulted in a rather poor multiplayer experience. However, the single-player mode works fine.

Update: Aspyr has released a statement acknowledging the critical errors they experienced on their network infrastructure that had caused the massive online issues experienced by players on launch day. They assured players that they are working to address the issues and to stabilize their infrastructure to prevent future outages.

Graphics/ Sound

STAR WARS™: Battlefront Classic Collection features some nice graphical revamps, including smoother textures which resulted in a much more immersive experience. The games also includes multiple cutscenes featuring snippets from the Star Wars movies. In terms of sound, the game provides quite the range, from the epic orchestral pieces that make Star Wars… well, Star Wars, to the kind of ambiance you’d come to expect in a firefight. The sound effects largely contribute to this, creating an atmosphere that is quite immersive.

Conclusion

The nostalgia is strong with this one. STAR WARS™: Battlefront Classic Collection may be marred by critical multiplayer issues right from the gate, which frankly is a bit of a bummer for a multiplayer-oriented game, but this is an issue that can be fixed, and well, the developers are already on it. With time, the collection may prove to be a competent remaster of the classics. For now, we would recommend sticking to the originals first and only grabbing this copy once the online issues have all been resolved.
