Plotline
Species 8472 are violent, xenophobic beings that had been at war with the Federation and the Klingon Empire. This war was managed to be broken due to an uneasy truce forged between the species and the Starfleet and Voyager crew. However, knowing that Species 8472 are war like by nature, both Federation and Empire are not convinced that the truce will hold and thus, they have started secretly evaluating the potential threat that Species 8472 might pose.
An opportunity arose when researchers from both races discovered a rare chance to examine an active quantum anomaly, much like what Species 8472 had used during the war. However, little did they know that Species 8472 has grew even more cunning over the years and this is merely one of the many traps they have set up to find out more about their enemies and possibly to cause the total annihilation of the Federation and the Klingon Empire.
Gameplay
After signing up, you’ll then need to choose 1 of the many servers available before you can actually choose a faction and create your character. Select between the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets to side with in this game. However, if you want to get a special advantage earlier on in the game, you should definitely pick the faction that offers a faction gift. Then, you’ll be allowed to create your captain. Captain creation is pretty simple. You just need to pick a gender and any one of the 3 profile pictures available. That’s about it and it’s time to get into the game proper!
Star Trek: Alien Domain starts off with play-as-you-learn type of tutorial where the game introduces you to the gameplay along with the storyline in bits and pieces. To cut things short though, you are a starship commander who was dispatched to check out a rift created by Species 8472. Unfortunately, your ship has been pulled into the extradimensional realm of fluidic space, or fluidic realm for short - the place indigenous to Species 8472. As you are trapped in an unknown area in space along with the enemy, Species 8472, you will need to be wise as to how you ensure your survival.
Thankfully, some forces of your empire have been trapped here for quite some time as well and apparently, they have been setting up outposts. An outpost was available to you and you can straightaway take charge of it... being in a much more senior commanding post and all. You will then need to develop your base into a functional and productive center for you to complete your missions and try to find a way back to your own time and space.
The building process starts off pretty fast, but will gradually slow down as you upgrade the buildings to higher levels. Also, building locations are fixed, so all you need to do is to unlock the buildings by reaching the required level and get them built. However to truly thrive in this strange new alien frontier, you’ll need resources... plenty of them! Generally, you’ll need to keep an eye out for 4 important resources, namely metal, energy, crystals and deuterium, which can be produced and collected from the metal factory, energy station, crystal factory and deuterium synthesizer respectively. Don’t forget to build storage facilities to keep your harvested resources safely so you can readily access it when needed. Of course, you can boost up your resource production by upgrading the respective buildings. Upgrades are restricted by the level of your captain though.
Once you have enough resources, you can then spend them to upgrade your starship or to build new starships at the shipyard to be later added to your fleet. There are many different types of starships and the model of these ships differs depending on which faction you choose. You can also upgrade your shipyard to unlock new types of ships and to increase building speed. However, you’ll need to spend synergen, which you can collect from the research lab, to first research the starship you want before starting the building process. Do take note that you can have up to 6 ships in a formation and that these slots in your formation will be unlocked as you level up.
In Star Trek: Alien Domain, there’s an indicator called Strength that... well, determines the strength of your fleet. Naturally, it is vital for you to keep improving your strength and luckily, there are many ways you can do just that in this game. The easiest method is by upgrading your weapon or starship skills. Every time you level up, you’ll earn a new skill point that you can then choose to invest into the many skills available. Of course, if you want to gain more damage for your ships, it’s always best to go with weapon skill upgrades first.
Moreover, you can also equip additional and more powerful weapons to your ship. Depending on the type of ship, they will have varying number of weapon slots that you can put weapons into. Every weapon you add will increase the strength of your fleet, and like most features in this game, you can easily upgrade your weapons by spending the E-crystals you’ve collected. You can even inlay your weapons with special boosters later on in the game. There is also a research lab whereby you can advance your available technology, which will, in turn, passively improve your starships. Researches require crystals though, so be sure to have them stocked up at all times
Not to mention, you can even recruit officers to help take charge of your respective starships. Officer recruitment can be costly though as you’ll need to spend premium cash if you don’t have the rarely dropped letter of appointment. That being said, getting officers can be really worth it as they can bump up your strength rating by a significant bit while offering passive boosts to your ship’s stats and also by having a unique officer’s ability. These officers can be leveled up as you deploy them into the field in your starships, and of course, the higher their level, the more they can contribute to your fleet.
In terms of PvE, the game offers Elite Lairs whereby your fleet will battle multiple rounds of enemies. Each venture into a lair will consume an attack license and you only get 10 per day. Once you’ve completed the lair once, you can perform a “sweep” to automatically get the rewards of the battle without going through all the auto-combat animation. You can also enter new wormholes in the fluidic sector to explore and engage enemies. This action will consume deuterium instead. There is also a PvP option in which you can battle other player’s fleet in an attempt to up your ranking and give yourself a nice boost up the rank ladder.

Being a “lone ranger” in a mysterious and foreign dimension isn’t every advantageous to you. Thus, if possible, you might want to sign up and join a squadron. By teaming up with other players, you can have someone to rely on to guard your back, especially earlier on when you’re just starting to develop your fleet and your base. Also, if you need more friends or you just like to meet your fellow players, you can always head over to Star Trek: Alien Domain’s Facebook fan page to do so.
Graphics/ Sound
Star Trek: Alien Domain features some incredible graphics indeed. Just take a look at its intricately detailed and well-designed starship models. They just look so amazing! Not to mention, the people behind the game didn’t take the easy way out and instead, they created uniquely different starship models depending on the race. For this, I would give them a +1. In terms of music, the game showcases a haunting yet militaristic-type music that contains some soft techno beats. Overall, the game’s graphics and sound worked well together to provide a nice experience for its users.
Conclusion
Star Trek: Alien Domain is an MMO strategy game that has a gameplay that mimics some of the browser-based MMORPGs out there. There are always plenty to do in this game doesn’t matter if it’s upgrading the buildings at your base, fighting aliens in Elite Lairs (dungeons) or improving your fleet of starships. The game also features a huge range of incredible-looking starships that will definitely make anyone who love this kind of stuff drool all over their keyboard. All in all, Star Trek: Alien Domain is a very robust and entertaining game that not only fans of Star Trek would enjoy, but also other casual MMO players.
