Splitgate is a free-to-play multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) game that features ‘Master Chief’-like characters and portal-travelling across the map, effectively a hybrid of the game Halo and Portal. Splitgate delivers fast-paced, high-flying, instant traveling, and multi-dimensional combat with its portal mechanics to players. You get to customize your character, challenge in a competitive ranking system, and enjoy over 15 game modes and maps with friends or other players.
For the past decades, FPS games are a mega-hit for their fast-paced gaming, simple and native control mechanism. As a Halo-vs-Portal-inspired game, Splitgate takes the FPS genre onto a whole new dimension. It not only seizes the classic and familiar feel of shooter gameplay but also adds some unique twists to make the already intense closed-combat experience more exciting and unpredictable. The portal combat strategy makes it a new kind of shooter you could ever experience. There is no story or campaign in Splitgate as it is a multiplayer exclusive FPS game, so its gameplay is the emphasis.
The gameplay of Splitgate is very similar to other shooter games. Unlike Call of Duty and other games where players can customize their weapons, Splitgame offers a fair start for all players. Players start with a gun which they can decide during the waiting or matching period. At this point, the weapons selection is limited to only the standard guns such as a battle rifle or an assault rifle. However, players get to pick up other more powerful guns like a shotgun, sniper rifle, and more during the battle. Although there are extra objectives for certain modes to win and end a game, the main goal of the game is to gun down your opponents. Players kill opponents to score points, and the first team to score certain target points wins the match.
Most of the things look familiar by far, but Splitgate is not just an ordinary FPS. Its unique portal mechanism is what makes this game different from other shooter games. Every player is equipped with a portal gun that allows them to set up a maximum of two pairs of portals at any time; one purple and one gold. Portals can only be created on holographic wall panels, which are surfaces that look like a laser mesh. Creating new portals will automatically close your previous portals, but you can choose to manually close your portals any time. Another way of closing portals, both yours and your opponents’, is by using an EMP grenade, although this grenade does not do any damage to the players. The color of your teammates’ portal is blue, but the color of your opponents’ portal is red. It is important to differentiate portals of good guys and bad guys because you cannot see the enemies on the other side of the opponents’ portal, so it could most likely be a trap. The same goes to your and your teammates’ portals.
Regardless, you can travel through any portal by walking, running or jumping through it. This is very important as you will carry the momentum of jumping (or free falling) onto the other side, which provides you a huge burst of speed when you cross the portal. Players can utilize this to surprise foes and melee them to death. You even can use portals to teleport to a higher platform or those tricky or out of sight locations to snipe on your opponents. Else, you can always open a portal beneath the enemy and let them fall to their death. The portal mechanism provides many innovative ways for players to leverage the situation to their advantage. You can pull all kinds of exciting and creative tricks that are out of your opponents’ expectations.
Splitgate is an arena-based shooter game that revolves around arena warfare. At this moment of writing, there are a total of 16 maps that you can choose from. Each map features a unique design and functionality. For instance, the Olympus map is an arena that is built floating on the clouds. You will die when you fall off the map. You can enjoy the luxury beach resort that is full of tall portal walls as your battleground in Oasis, so getting a long-range weapon might be a good idea. There are also some underground maps such as Club Silo, Abyss, and more. Club Silo is a fabulous nightclub where attendees place their bets on competitors while viewing them behind bullet-proof glass. Splitgate also features 10 different types of game modes, but they can be categorized as game modes that focus on higher number of kills, completion of certain objectives and time limited objectives. All maps and modes are fun to mix and match, just choose your favorite, get familiar and create your best strategy to ace the game!
Splitgate, which was released on PC in 2019, hit the right note with a lot of Halo and Portal fans. Since then, the game was released on various consoles and have garnered a player base up to 200,000 concurrent players for all platforms. Although this number has dropped from its peak on PC platform, it has still not yet affected the game queue time and there are still a lot of arenas that are fully occupied by players. The game developers are also still working hard to further expand the game in the form of new game modes, maps, patches and seasonal events, and these will further draw in more players to the game.
The 3D graphic quality of Splitgate is on par with other AAA games, like Halo and Call of Duty. It is a relatively lightweight game and it can run on most computer systems. Although it is playable with minimum requirement, you might prefer to go for higher frame rates if you want to get the best out of the game as a competitive player. In addition, you might want to tweak your portal quality setting too as the visuals through your portals are very blurry if it is on a low setting. The sound effects are really good, especially the gunshot sounds of different hi-tech guns, and are able to provide that immersive shooter experience in a futuristic setting.
All in all, Splitgate is the next-generation shooter game with its unique portal gameplay. This sci-fi FPS game lets you frag with portals, flank your enemy from behind, and even fly through the arena effortlessly like a super-soldier. You get to ‘teleport’ around the arena through portals, and there is nothing like landing an epic shot on the enemies from behind without them even knowing where it came from. Let’s party up with your friends, and enjoy this exciting and fast-paced arena FPS that contains so many exotic maps and game modes!
