Build your own city-state and fortify it!

The first war between the Greeks and the Persian Empire, led by King Xerxes I, was considered as one of the most important conflicts in classic history.

At the head of the Greek coalition was Sparta, Greece's most war-minded city-state whose citizens, they said, had been bred and grown for only one purpose... war.

This is the history that Plarius' browser strategy game delves into. As a strategy game, you will be playing the role of a Greek Archon, a leader of an unnamed city-state that you will have to develop into a formidable fighting force to join the rest of the Greeks. This does not mean just training your men and getting them ready for war. This also means diving head-on into the day-to-day administrative tasks that goes with managing a large city.

Get ready to become a warrior, a diplomat and a city-state administrator all rolled into one package.

Sparta: War of Empires begins with King Leonidas sending you a message that he, as King of Sparta, is now willing to fight alongside you and the other Greek city-states in repelling the threat of Xerxes' army. However, the amassing of resources and power for your city-state is a task that you alone is responsible for. Leonidas is only there to assist in an advisory capacity.

The game starts with a step-by-step tutorial with no more than Leonidas himself teaching you the basics of getting a poor city up from scratch, and transforming it into a rich and resourceful state that can hold its own even against rival city-states. This is not your ordinary tutorial. The game, despite being a browser game, has a cinematic feel to it.

Your tutorial is delivered by Leonidas using recorded lines spoken by a professional voice actor, with impressive background music to fill in the gaps. Perfect combo to set the mood for preparing for war!

As a statesman, one of your roles will be to sign agreements with various other city-states in Greece.

This is important and central to your mission, because every agreement that you sign will give you access to specific units of your infantry. Your first agreement, which is with the state of Akanthos, will unlock the Javelineers. The more agreements you sign, the more units you can train in the Infantry camp.

To produce your resources, you will need to build structures like the Farm and the Lumberyard. You can only have six of these structures built, but you can upgrade them to increase their levels and increase their production. A very productive farm or lumberyard will allow you to amass the necessary resources to support your rapidly growing army because, as Leonidas says in the game, hungry soldiers will most certainly desert their units in order to tend to their families.

When you first start with Sparta: War of Empires, the gameplay will be a bit difficult to figure out. There are many menus that you have to keep in mind, especially in the right-hand part of the screen where you have the War, Agreements and Market menus, among others. On the left-hand part, you have the Tasks and Quests menus. In time, however, you will get to figure it out.

Now, there are four currencies that you have to monitor constantly in this game. First, you have the Bronze, Grain, and Wood, all of which are produced and stored in the structures that you build, namely the Farm, Lumberjack and Smelter structures. These are used for the upkeep of your city's military forces, that's why upgrading is a must because, the larger your military is, the more resources you need to maintain it.

The last currency is the Drachma, which equals to Gold in other strategy or RPG games.

Battles, of course, are central to the experience. You can attack a Persian outpost and totally annihilate its forces, or you can attack a rival-city state. You can besiege your enemy or, if you want to steal some resources, you can raid the city-state with a few select units.

You also get to segregate your forces. You have your offensive units, which do best when sent into battle outside your city but will be sitting ducks if used as defensive soldiers. The defensive military, on the other hand, is meant to defend the city and not to be used in raids, sieges or attacks.

The graphics are certainly beautiful. This game trumps earlier browser based strategy games like Travian in the clarity and quality of the images used for the cities and battles.

Cinematic music, great graphics and a very challenging gameplay... what more could you ask from Plarium's Sparta: War of Empires?
