Gameplay

Like most hidden object games, Sophia the Traveler has a simple gameplay that just about anyone can get into. You’ll need to rely on your power of observation to scan each map meticulously to find the items, all of which are helpfully depicted in full color on the right side of the screen.

Out of the ten hidden object levels available, the goal remains the same – that is to find everything there is to find to proceed to the next level. Interestingly though, for massive maps with over 20 items to find, the game lets you off easy by unlocking the next level once you’ve found enough of the items… that is to say, for huge maps, there’s no need to find every item before you can move on to the next map.

Not everything is hidden in plain sight though! Similar to other hidden object games online like Hidden through Time or Hidden Fellas, many parts of the game are interactive. This means that yes, you can open doors and windows, push back curtains, or rustle through bushes or trees to find the items hidden behind them. There are even crates and barrels that you can open in case something is hidden inside them.

Similar to Where’s Waldo, each hidden item comes with a clue that pops up when you click on it that is supposed to help you find it easier and faster. After all, the details on each map, especially the bigger ones, can be overwhelming and it can get really frustrating if you have to scan every single inch of the map, in addition to opening everything there is to open.

However, the clues are often way too vague or are simply useless information that doesn’t really point you in the right direction to start your search. As such, I found myself ended up feeling incredibly frustrated when I realize that the game expects me to just look at every single person on the map and try to match them with the characters on the “to find” list.

Thankfully, even if you do decide to throw in the towel, you can still find the elusive hidden item by simply using the hint given. Unlike some hidden object adventures, this game doesn’t give you hints straight-up. Instead, you’ll earn them by spending time in a level. Every five minutes will earn you a free hint up until you have a maximum of five accumulated. Once that limit is reached, you can only get new ones if you spend your hints.

As fun and charming as the game is, Sophia the Traveler has quite a number of flaws, with the most frustrating being the lack of proper clues and the occasional poor translation of clue texts. Clues make or break games like this, and personally, the game might have dropped the ball on this one. This isn’t to say that the game can’t be played at all, but you should definitely temper your expectations.

Graphics/ Sound

Sticking true to its Where’s Waldo theme, Sophia the Traveler has a graphical style that many fans of the latter would enjoy. The game also comes with a camera mode and a zoom in/out feature, making the item search However, due to budget constraints or something, there are plenty of repeated assets being used, not just across levels but sometimes, even within the same level. There are also some minor glitches, mostly involving moving objects when they move behind something.

In terms of sound, the game doesn’t have a background track, but instead uses ambiance, relying on sounds from musicians playing various instruments or a marching band, and other events that come with sound effects like crying children or seagulls. Once you’re within the vicinity of one of these sound sources, the sound will start up, much like an engine on a car. The sounds are apt in this game, but they can be rather jarring at times, especially if you’re quickly moving form one part of the map to another. The sounds don’t really blend well into one another and will just sound abruptly cut off and replaced by another sound.

Conclusion

Inspired by Where’s Waldo, Sophia the Traveler is a fun hidden object adventure that unfortunately has a fundamental flaw. The clues you rely on to narrow down the field and make finding each hidden object so much more satisfying can sometimes be incredibly vague and unhelpful. Instead, most of the time, you’re just scanning every inch of the map in hopes of finding the item or person you need. Thankfully, there are still hints, but for perfectionist players, you’ll hate the idea of having to use hints after caving in to it after an hour or more looking for that one item.
