Plotline

In a future where resources are running low the African country of Zandia overflows with resources. Warfare has changed and now countries hire out their needs to specialist military contractors. You now work for one of these corporations and have been contracted to claim the area for yourself, and of course stop anyone else from making a similar claim.

Gameplay

When you first begin Soldiers Inc you are working with Mr Black, a man who knows his way around the local area, and who will provide you with some help and support. He will be your guide through a tutorial process and a good source of information for you. This fully voiced character will give you quests, show you how to make buildings and resources as well as take on your enemies.

In the world of Zandia the corporation with the most muscle wins and it is your job to make sure you have it. As you follow the quests you will discover the 3 main resources you need in the game, Fuel, Munitions and Supplies. Each of these is obtained by your buildings and they will gather resources for you over time. You can also upgrade these buildings to make them more productive. Managing your resources is a vital part of the game as they determine how fat you grow and how powerful you armies are.

By following the first few quests you will also learn about negotiating contracts. These contracts are effectively your research trees, and they will allow you access to new buildings, defences and units. Each contract will cost a certain amount of resources and will take some time to complete, from a few seconds to a few hours depending on the individual contract. Once you start to open a contract you can also renegotiate it for a better deal, giving you improved numbers and time or buildings for the contract.

Once you start to get your contracts sorted you can begin to really work on building your base and mercenary forces up. There are several key buildings you need, that allow you to trade with players, scan the area map for opponents and buildings for your army units too. Buildings cost resources to make and time but once they are up and running it makes things much smoother for you.

Your military is divided into 2 types, offensive and defensive. It is important to keep these units in their specific roles, as a defensive unit sent in to attack somewhere will be badly damaged and give you no benefit. You begin with basic infantry and your contracts will open up new more powerful units as you upgrade them. You can also gain better defensive units to defend your base with as well as turrets and walls to protect your assets.

When you are wanting to attack a base, either that of the Zheng Shi Security Combine or another player you will have to decide which of your units to send. A tactical map will show all of the enemies around you and their relative level. Each of your units has an offensive value and this will need to be greater than their defensive value. You then send your units off, and a certain time later they will return with a report as to whether they won or not.

If you win the battle you will gain resources as well as the opportunity for some of the enemy forces to join your ranks and improve your army. If you attack another player the rewards are greater, but also a lot more risky. Some of your units may be injured or lost in the battle, and you can either replace them or heal them through the black market. Keeping your units topped up is vital to continuing operations in the area.

Diplomacy is also a large part of Soldiers Inc as you will need help to achieve your goals, and if you stand completely alone there is a good chance you will be picked off by a bigger commander or the Zheng Shi. You have a couple of options here, you can join a Combine, a group of players that work together and protect each other. You can also trade resources and items with players to make sure you have what you need.

Mr Black will remain with you throughout your time here, and he will always have quests for you to complete. By doing so you can earn diamonds, which can be used for variety of effects including speeding up contract negotiations and build times as well as restoring your lost units. Completing quests will also grant you experience which counts towards your level, the higher your level the better contracts you can unlock.

There is a lot that you can do in Soldiers Inc and it is a game that just keeps on giving. There is no maximum level cap and you will be able to pick and choose your fights, you can also take over enemy and player bases to use for your own good. You just have to defend them too. The option to play both PvE and PvP is really nice as it gives a casual player the chance to enjoy the game without the need to a huge time commitment. There are lots of different fun units for you to control and getting the best out of your armies is actually really engaging.

The strategy element of the game is pretty in depth and balancing everything right is both challenging and rewarding, especially in combat situations. With all you could want in a strategy game plus some really nice character acting you are getting a game with a lot of thought put into it. It will also provide you with a never ending supply of fun and fighting to be had.

Community

There is quite a large following for Soldiers Inc, with millions of players all over the world vying for the resources of Zandia. This has lead to a pretty extensive community which can sometimes be a little competitive but is generally pretty good. Combines are a good way to meet new people and it can lead to a lot of different things for you to do as well as being able to chat to people while you build up in the game.

Graphics/Sound

There are not many games that look as good as Soldiers Inc around, with a brilliant and dark feeling to the game in both the construction and design of the game. You really feel immersed in the atmosphere of a military camp. The interface is simple and easy to use with some pretty good graphics too boot.

The fully voiced Mr Black really gives a high note to the game, with the dramatic music floating around in the background and the occasional sound effect for buildings or returning troops it intensifies the atmosphere and adds a lot to an already good game.

Conclusion

While the PvP aspect may not be for everyone there is no denying that Soldiers Inc is a brilliant game. With an interesting storyline, lots of different things to manage as well as a very deep research tree there is so much to do here, and it is brilliant. The strategy side of combat is also very well designed, with some important decisions for you to make as well as having a huge range of units to pick from. Soldiers Inc is a complete game, and it shows when you play in a really good way.
