Summary

There’s a magical world high above the clouds, and you face many quests to explore this mystical land in this farming and simulation game, Sky Dale. Gather resources and craft tools to carry out important tasks. With a helpful companion called Tilki, you’ll be on your way to building a beautiful haven in the sky.

Plotline

Your plane crashed into a mysterious island, and it’s floating in the sky. You meet a cute critter named Tilki, and together you need to find out how to survive by gathering resources around the island to make food and other essential tools.

Gameplay

When you start the game, you’ll get a dialogue between a raccoon-like creature named Tilki and your character as they try to make sense of what just happened. A debris of an apparent plane crash is on fire and you need to quickly find water to put it out. If you don’t know how to do it, you can click on Tilki for help. You actually need to pick up some leaves, scoop water out of a small pond and pour it on to the burning vehicle.

Now that the fire is out, Tilki and you notice that you’re in a strange place, suspended among the clouds. Tilki makes a few suggestions to get you settled in, like removing your space suit and helmet. While you’re at it, you can customize your character’s hair, eyes, clothes and shoes by clicking on the suitcase that fell on the ground as a result of the crash.

The next immediate action is to explore the surroundings. You notice a transmitter of some sort, but you don’t have the right tools to use it just yet. You can click on Tilki, or the list of quests on the left side of the screen to see what you need to do next. As you accomplish the first few tasks, like making a Workbench where you can create tools and a drying rack to dry leaves, your skill level will grow. There are many skills that you’ll develop over time, such as Gathering, Building, Crafting, Woodcutting and Mining. The higher your skill level, the more efficient you are in doing it. You increase your skill level by doing each skill as many times as you can.

Your activities are limited by the amount of Energy you have. You can get more Energy from Elixirs, which are either given as rewards for quests or made as an in-game purchase. If you don’t want to spend real money, you’ll have to wait for your Energy to regenerate after a few minutes. Each unit of Energy takes 3 minutes to recharge.

Also, you can’t just interact with any object in the land. You have to have the right tools. For instance, you just need your hands for collecting grass, but you need a shovel for digging soil from a pit. This is where the Crafting table comes in, which you need to open to learn what materials are needed to create tools such as a shovel, a rope or a smooth stone.

Let’s not forget that this is a farming game as well, so you can grow certain plants that you can use to make food and other materials. When you’re just starting out, you can only select two to three kinds of plants, but more are unlocked as your level and skill increases.

One important task of this game is to build and reinforce a broken bridge that leads to another bigger island. When you complete the bridge, you can go to the other island to gather more resources. There are also mysterious objects that you need to get to, but not until you’ve cleared the bushes and trees that block your way. To keep making progress, always check and complete tasks as indicated in the Quest menus on the left.

Since you can only do a limited amount of work, you can add friends and put red flags on the objects that you need help on. For instance, there are lots of grass and bushes blocking the way to other objects, so you can put a flag on some of them so your friends can clear them for you. You can also do the same thing for your friends. You can visit their land and look for flags to help them out as well.

The one thing missing in Sky Dale is some form of currency. There are no gold coins to collect, and no buildings that generate income, which is fine because the objectives of the game don’t require money. Everything you need in this game is made with the resources found in the land. Even valuable objects like gems are made by mining stones, which makes sense since you really can’t buy gems when you’re marooned in a floating island.

Community

Although Sky Dale is not as popular as other simulation games, you can find other players by simply clicking the Add Friends button on the top bar while playing the game. You can visit your friends’ lands and help them out in return for rewards. The game’s official website also features a blog dedicated to this game, where you get to learn more about the story behind its game creation.

Graphics/Sound

To say that this game looks a bit different is an understatement. The graphic design sports a flat, cartoon style that you might find a bit hard to take in. The flatness of the graphics can sometimes wash out details that you need to see. Despite this, it’s still a refreshing and interesting look that deserves your attention. The background music has a chill, ambient quality that lets you play the game in ease.
