Summary

Santacraft is a lighthearted pixel adventure that’s set in the North Pole that has just been devastated by a massive blizzard… and right before Christmas too! Help Santa rebuild the town of North Pole to attract the elves to return, restart the production of his toy workshop so as to have enough presents for all the good kids around the world, and most importantly, retrieve his missing reindeer and sleigh by helping the locals with their tasks. Will Santa have everything ready in time for Christmas?

Plotline

The story here is simple. A massive blizzard has swept across the North Pole, devastating everything in its wake, including the town where Santa produces toys and other presents for all the good kids around the world.

With the clock ticking down to Christmas eve, you’ll need to help Santa explore the North Pole to not only obtain resources to rebuild the town and hence, restart the production of toys, but he will also need to help the locals with their tasks just to retrieve the reindeers that have gone missing.

Gameplay

SantaCraft is a simple yet delightful sandbox adventure that I’d liken to a Christmas-themed 2D Minecraft game. In this game, you’ll need to put in a big of casual grind as you explore North Pole to gather a variety of resources that you can then either craft into something new or deliver to a quest giver in exchange for a reward, namely a reindeer that is missing due to the blizzard.

Some resources are easy enough to obtain, including pears which require some simple farming (basically just planting and harvesting), but there are some that require specific tools, like the fishing rod or the candy pickax, all of which can be crafted via your Inventory. The game makes it easy for you to change tools as needed by using the mouse wheel, so there’s really no reason for you to use your pickax to clear away snow tiles when you could have easily changed to the shovel to do so. Tools in this game also have durability ratings so you’ll need to keep replenishing broken tools by crafting new ones – there’s no repair option here.

Crafting here is very straightforward and simple as well. There’s no mini-game involved nor does it need special crafting stations. All you need to do is to have the necessary materials needed, head over to your Inventory, and, with the press of a mouse button, you can craft the item or structure that you can then either use (or equip) or build. The game doesn’t seem to have any inventory limit – since it seems he’s using a Doraemon-like magic sack – so you can technically craft a bunch of stuff first before placing them in the positions you wanted.

Building – or should I say, “rebuilding” – Santa’s town is also as simple as crafting in this game. You can click on any of the structures you’ve “crafted” in your inventory and click on the “Place” button to place it wherever you like. However, do take note that NPCs and snow will prevent you from placing anything, so you’ll need to use the shovel to clear out the snow and use the bagpipes to “shoo” any NPCs away from the plot you want to build something on. Note that you can also remove any placed objects by simply holding down the right mouse button with mousing over the object.

You can also equip Santa with a range of wearables, namely the head, chest, legs and feet, in this game, but unlike other sandbox adventures, you can’t craft any of them in this game. Instead, you’ll be expected to find most of these wearables by looking out for a yellow question mark in the snow. Sometimes, you may even get a new wearable as a quest reward. Although you’ll start off with the basic wearables, you’ll eventually find wearables that come with nice perks which would make a certain item better for certain activities, such as having the right boots on for faster fishing and getting better and rarer fishing yields too!

As with any good adventure game, SantaCraft has a host of quest-givers scattered across the North Pole. By talking to them, you’ll be able to take on whatever tasks they need you to do, whether it is to collect a specific number of birds, or craft a specific number of items, or build a specific object or building in the North Pole. All of the crafting-oriented and fetch quests you’ve taken, both main and side quests (including repeatable ones), are helpfully tracked in-game by Santa’s Quest Log. There’s also a tracker at the top left corner of the screen that shows you how many quest items you’ve collected or crafted so far.

As a reward for completing their tasks, you’ll usually be given one out of the ten missing reindeer, or possibly a part of the sleigh. Though there are times when you’ll be given other items, such as milk or hens, that can, in turn, be turned in at another quest giver for a reward.

SantaCraft is also filled with many NPCs who don’t seem to do anything except spout fun Christmas puns. Make sure to click on the NPCs multiple times to read all the puns/quips they have.

Graphics/ Sound

SantaCraft features plenty of adorable Christmas-themed pixel art and sprites that any fan would fall heads over heels for! The details and love that went into every piece of art here is impressive to say the least. You can also feel the Christmas joy from the range of mostly Christmas-themed soundtracks in the game. SantaCraft takes its job of immersing you in the festive mood seriously and it shows throughout the game!

Conclusion

In a nutshell, SantaCraft offers a charming, puns-filled sandbox adventure that’s just perfect for Christmas. Not only will you get to build your own Christmassy town from the ground up, but you’ll also get to explore a resource-laden North Pole, unlock and craft a variety of items, and complete a host of crafting-oriented and fetch quests to retrieve the missing reindeers. It’s definitely a delightful gem of a game with an unbeatable price that you simply have to play, more so during the festive season!
