Sandstorm Pirate Wars is a browser-based action RPG that is placed in a fictional post-apocalyptic world where pirates have ruled the world. You battle other rival pirates for survival by destroying their sand cruiser ships and salvage parts from them to improve your own ship. All battles are in real time, so you must think and act fast before your ship blows into pieces.
Set in a science fiction world, Sandstorm: Pirate Wars puts you in a post-apocalyptic world where majority of the land is now a desert, and as a sand pirate, you must survive the harsh environment filled with rival pirates and mutant scavengers as you also try to rescue refugees and bring them to safety in nearby havens.
What is interesting with Sandstorm: Pirate Wars is the style of the gameplay, instead of the automated battles in most mobile RPGs, you need to be active and attack the enemy ships with your arsenal, otherwise your ship will be annihilated from the attacks.
Starting off in the game, you will be greeted with a quick battle with a sand pirate, a series of instructions will be provided to explain the basics in combat. After defeating your first pirate, you will then be greeted in a base at the desert to explain how to upgrade your ship. Once you progress a bit further in the game, more of the game features will be explained, such as upgrading parts or talking to people at taverns.
The tutorials occur in some missions just to explain the basics of the featured mechanics. But you start with a basic ship and one weapon, after succeeding missions, you will be able to add more to your ship. You can install a series of weapons depending on the type of ship you are using; you can add two weapons on the top portion and two support items on the bottom part of the ship. Each weapon type has its specialty attack that has an advantage to certain parts of a ship, a gatling gun for example can penetrate shields and damage the shield generators faster, while stinger missles can shoot a series of missles to a ship and deals more damage than a gatling gun, but its attacks will be rendered useless against flare bombs.
All of the loot from the battle are randomized and you have the option to get more than one random loot per match at the cost of spending resources, the risk is high but there are chances that you could land a rare item. You can replace any existing weapons on your ship with your newly obtained weapons, you can also upgrade your ship to increase its life bar or customize it with different designs that also provides stat bonus or special effects.
As for combat, Sandstorm pits you against an opposing pirate ship in a duel while racing in the vast desert. You have a series of ability points available that you will use to spend for actions to attack. Each of your weapons have varied action points and the bigger the requirement, the deadlier their damage is. Your ability points will replenish over time so players must choose wisely on which to use first to deal more damage against the enemy. Another can be found beside the ability points bar, which the weapon rage meter, this fills up slowly over time and once it is full, you can activate it to deal more damage from your weapons until the meter becomes empty. Every time you attack, the health bar of the enemy ship depletes, and once you destroy some of the weapons, they will be rendered useless until the match is over. If your ship gets damaged during the battle, it will regenerate over time but you can still take missions even with a depleted health.
There are several missions that you can participate and each provides rewards. Later in the game, you will be able to take quests from NPCs at the Tavern where you must go to specific locations to complete it, some quests may be more difficult and requires a higher level for a better chance of winning.
There are a number of active players in Sandstorm: Pirate Wars, you can interact with them via the messaging system, where you can add them as your friend in the game. As for PvP battles, there is the arena where you can challenge players’ ships to see if which one has the best pirate ship. The drawback is that all of the enemy ships are AI controlled, so there is not much difficulty aside from having a high leveled ship to win easily.
For a browser game, Sandstorm has great visuals, the detailed look on the ships provide some style to it, the battles showcase some simple special effects on the weapons as well as neat dust particles that scattered around the area. Some of the in-game art portraits may seem flat but still enough to provide some personality to each character. The sound department is great, as some music scores provide that post-apocalyptic vibe with some guitar sounds and other western-style music.
Overall, Sandstorm: Pirate Wars is a great browser and mobile RPG that provides a refreshing feel to the typical action RPG in the market. The visuals provide great detail on its post-apocalyptic world and the engaging gameplay makes it fun to play for hours. Fans of action RPGs may enjoy playing this game as well as fans of post-apocalyptic games.
