Summary
RUNGORE is a deckbuilding roguelike with hectic auto-battle-based combat. Playing as the hero of your choice (and there are several, all of which can be unlocked as you progress), you’ll venture out into the dangerous world and fight any enemy that stands in your way. Will you survive to the end and defeat the final boss?
Gameplay
RUNGORE combines the auto-battle feature in auto-battlers with the strategic nature of deckbuilding roguelikes to produce a fairly hectic yet unique roguelike experience. Here, you’ll get to choose a hero before diving into whichever district you chose from the world map. Note that you’ll start with only one hero and one district – the Jungle (aside from the tutorial island) – but you’ll get to unlock more heroes, each with their unique play styles and strengths, and new areas as you progress.
Fights, as per the autobattler element, are all automatically resolved. However, there’s a way you can influence how the battle pan out… preferably in your favor, and that is by playing cards! You’ll start with several cards in hand and will get to add three more (generally) after every victorious fight. The cards come in several types, and they change depending on the hero you are playing as.
For instance, the Knight Guy has an ability card that can Mark his opponents, allowing him to deal additional damage, while the Hungry Man is able to self-restore and Maim his opponents with cards. Of course, as you progress, you’ll start encountering cards that combine various effects, giving you both attack and armor, for example, or the ability to Mark and damage an opponent at the same time.
Aside from cards, you’ll also get to equip your hero with whatever equipment you may encounter as loot. You can equip up to one type of weapon, helmet, and armor, and they often provide a variety of effects. You may even encounter better versions of the item you’re wearing as you progress.
After every (mini-)boss fight, you’ll be presented with three unique artifacts in which you can choose only one. The perk granted by the chosen artifact persists throughout a run and can sometimes be so powerful that it literally turns the tide of battle for you, such as the artifact that buffs my attack for every radiation my hero suffers during the highly-irradiated Sewers run. I ended up with so much attack power, I almost could one-shot the final boss.
In addition to fights, both big and small, you may sometimes encounter events where your choice may make the rest of the run that much easier or more difficult for you. Some of these events can be insanely hilarious, such as that one time when the game asks if I would take on increased radiation in hopes of getting superpowers… well, as the game so poignantly pointed out, it doesn’t work that way!
Anyway, every successful run will earn you some precious coins… and yes, you do not earn a single coin if you failed a run, i.e. couldn’t defeat the final boss for whatever reason. The coins earned can then be invested in getting useful upgrades at the shop. This ranges from unlocking more advanced features like more card variety to more variety of equipment.
As fun as the game is for a fan of deckbuilding roguelike like me, there was a time when I had no cards left to play, and the fight was progressing a lot slower than expected due to multiple revives on both my and the boss’s part. In this case, it would be nice to have a speed-up button pop up, or even a Skip Battle button, just so I could just get to the end-screen of the fight, resolving the battle a lot quicker and allowing me to hop into my next run that much faster.
Graphics/ Sound
RUNGORE features fantastically detailed pixel art that’s befitting of its indie roots. Aside from the brilliant card art, the animations are all very well done too, making each fight so much more satisfying to go through. In terms of sound, the game features a selection of heavy techno and dubstep music that changes in pace and tempo depending on what you’re encountering on-screen, be it an enemy to fight or an event to resolve.
Conclusion
Roguelikes are a dime a dozen nowadays, but from time to time, we see new games that offer something new emerge… and RUNGORE is definitely among those handful! The game provides plenty of content and variety, making each subsequent run both enjoyable and satisfying as you acquire more upgrades. If you’re a fan of roguelikes and are looking for something new yet familiar along with a murderous edge, RUNGORE is one game you’ll want to check out!
