Summary

It is unlikely that bullet hell sidescrolling shooters will ever go out of fashion. These games are timeless, and many gamers today have had experience playing them in arcades or on their consoles at home. Their popularity and timelessness can not only be attributed to nostalgia; there are new games that not only continue to add more entries to the genre but also add innovations and gameplay elements.

Rolling Gunner + Over Power is a fantastic example of such an experience. Though it is a traditional true-to-form sidescrolling shooter, it introduces a few gameplay mechanics that make it stand out among its peers. And yes, from a presentation standpoint, it is nothing short of impressive, thanks to the art and the chaotic scenes that occur every second of every playthrough.

Available on the PlayStation 4 and other consoles like the Nintendo Switch, should you give Rolling Gunner + Over Power a shot? Before you head over to the cockpit, let’s check out what it has to offer:

Plotline

We’ve all seen predictions of the state of the world in the future, and yes, most of which are rather morbid and set the stage for the apocalypse. Two of the many predictions involve a massive corporation driven by greed for power, while the other has sentient computers. These two tropes are the focal point of Rolling Gunner + Over Power’s plot.

A company called Lerman Matsunaga discovered a new element in the depths of the Pacific Ocean, which enabled them to create minuscule computers. One thing led to the other, and soon, a now sentient computer called BAC now controls nearly all of the world’s engines and power, setting the stage for a brutal machine/computer overlordship.

With the world in chaos and the population cut in half, our protagonists on the sidelines start making their move, deploying the spacecraft RF-42R Stork and the Rolling Gun, a special weapon built in a veil of secrecy designed to fight the BAC in the event of a crisis, which has, unfortunately, materialized.

Gameplay

Rolling Gunner + Over Power’s gameplay loop is comparable to most bullet hell sidescrolling shooters. With your spaceship, you’ll go through various levels, fighting off hordes of enemy aircraft, tanks, and robots while dodging and blocking the projectiles they shoot. The game is relatively short; it only has six levels, but the replayability is sky high thanks to its various difficulty modes and leaderboards, like most games in the genre.

The game starts by letting you choose one of the three aircraft available. Though they are all Stork crafts, they have distinct differences that make them inherently unique. The main thing that sets them apart is their firing patterns; one first straight at the middle with a little spread, the second goes for a spread shot, while the other concentrates its fire at the center. It’s not much, but these cater to particular playstyles.

The gameplay element that sets Rolling Gunner + Over Power apart from its peers is its titular Rolling Gun. It is essentially an attachment you can independently control apart from the craft, enabling you to aim anywhere on the screen, allowing you to shoot enemies regardless of direction. In addition, there are also two firing modes, the Gunner and Fighter. Gunner mode enables you to concentrate fire on the Rolling Gun and is best for taking out single and more durable targets. Meanwhile, the Fighter mode focuses fire on your craft and is best if you’re fighting enemies on the right side of the screen. The game doesn’t have bombs or anything, but you can press R2 on the Dualshock 4 to trigger an overpowering firing mode which also converts enemy projectiles to medals that, when obtained, earns you points.

Apart from the aspects mentioned above, the Rolling Gun can also be used as a shied, making it invaluable in blocking enemy fire. Thanks to this, showers of enemy lasers and bullets are easier to deal with and dodge. Unlike its peers, you don’t die after a single hit: ships have HP, and you have three lives. The game’s hitboxes are a bit iffy - there were times wherein I should have been hit but wasn’t. I’m not complaining, but more seasoned and challenge-oriented players may find this concerning.

Community

Rolling Gunner + Over Power does not have online co-op capabilities, but it enables you to register your score to the online leaderboards. This makes it an online arcade game where you compete for the highest score against the game’s legion of players worldwide.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Rolling Gunner + Over Power is outstanding. Though you could argue that everything looks dated, the 90s arcade-themed visuals and art are part of its appeal. The levels, background art, and enemies are well designed; everything is a chaotically pleasant experience, yet, it’s pretty easy to discern your craft among hundreds of projectiles that can take you out. The same can be said about the music; the soundtracks are akin to what you would hear in games back in the 90s and late 00s.

Conclusion

Rolling Gunner + Over Power is a must-have regardless of whether you’re into bullet hell games or otherwise. Without trying to sound corny, the game is a pinch of bullet heaven, giving you a short yet exciting shooter experience that you’ll likely play over and over again.
