Gameplay

Robin Hood – Sherwood Builders features a third-person-style action-adventure gameplay where you get to not only explore Sherwood Forest and the areas beyond, but you’ll also get to dive into some pretty epic fights, either tapping into Robin’s legendary skills with the bow and arrow or, in the case of forced close combat, using a sword.

There are gameplay features that can help Robin in combat as well, such as the slow motion mode that you can activate when needed, making it easier to aim more accurately, especially for moving targets; a hunter’s sense, which makes enemies more visible among the cover of trees and foliage, and the fact that Robin can carry around 400 pieces of arrows without breaking a sweat, meant that you keep up the heat on your enemies without having to worry about limited ammo or having to try to find a lull in the fight to quickly craft some more arrows on-the-fly. You can supposedly take out enemies stealthily here, too, but that part of the game doesn’t seem to work as well.

Exploration is also made easy, thanks to its map, a nifty navigation bar at the top of the screen, and the option to add a custom pin to the map. The world in this game can be pretty massive, and there’s some backtracking needed due to quests, but luckily, there’s fast travel in this game, and you can use it to go from your questing location back to town quickly.

During your bouts of explorations, you may even come across fun little puzzles that, when solved, will reward you with access to secret stashes filled with valuable loot. Most puzzles are fairly simple, especially if you are already familiar with the sort of puzzles you’ll typically encounter in an action-adventure title. They range from jumping puzzles to more logic-based ones where you have to, for instance, line up beams of light or step on tiles in the correct order.

You’ll also encounter different factions in the game. You can choose to foster a good relationship with them by helping them or burn the bridge, so to speak, by getting on their wrong side. Naturally, it’s always better to have more friends than enemies since you can trade with friendly factions in this game.

Crafting, which includes cooking, is another important aspect of this game since Robin will need to be well-fed, watered, and rested for him to be at his best. While Robin could craft a variety of tools directly from his inventory, including bow and arrows, some crafting recipes require the use of crafting facilities, like the alchemy lab or the furnace, to turn raw materials into processed ones, such as converting clay to brick or copper to copper bars. Most of the buildings you may need for crafting can be built via the “village management table” situated within the main Robin’s Village. You can also cook food over any fire with the necessary cooking pot.

When interacted with, the table will bring up a new interface where you’ll get to choose and place which building you need, provided that you have enough resources to build it. You can even clear the land by removing smaller trees so you can build more buildings. You can’t remove the big ones since you’ll need them to build new homes to house more merry men.

On the left side of the interface, there’s also a section where you can assign available villagers to four different resource-gathering roles, namely Hunters, Fishers, Herborists, and Miners. The more villagers you assign to a task, the higher production rate you’ll get. However, take note that buildings require people to operate as well, and if someone is already automatically assigned to a building, he/she won’t be able to work in other jobs. Each profession can also be further upgraded to unlock new materials that your assigned villagers will then gather. Everything they get will then be stored in the communal storage box. You can add stuff there, like food and building materials, for village use as well.

Of course, to build or craft anything, you’ll need a lot of resources. You can get some of them, like reeds and certain herbs, by simply finding them and picking them up, but others may require the use of tools like the axe for chopping wood, and the pickaxe for gathering metal ores. All tools and weapons in this game have durability and will wear out with use. You can repair the tools with a repair kit which is surprisingly hard-ish to come by, or you could just craft a new one and dump the old. There’s even a trader in the village whom you can buy some stuff from. He will also buy anything you’d like to sell.

Almost everything you do in this game will help Robin gain some experience points. Once the points reached a threshold, he will level up, giving you several skill points that you can then invest in his skill tree. There are many builds you can try, and the more skills you unlock, the better Robin would be.

Robin Hood – Sherwood Builders is very rich in gameplay and content, offering players up to hundreds of hours of playtime not just from exploring the many nook and cranny of Sherwood Forest, solving puzzles, and questing, but also from building your village and managing it, building rep with neighboring townships, as well as gathering anything else that you may need.

That being said, the game does have some glitches and issues. For instance, if you didn’t talk to the stable master before attempting to use the fast travel option, the game will crash without any error. In this case, the developer should have just disable the fast travel option until the player has talked to the stable master. Stealth seems weird with it working one time and not in another.

Graphics/ Sound

Robin Hood – Sherwood Builders boasts of having top-notch graphics and breathtaking visuals that perfectly captures the natural beauty of Sherwood Forest… or any forest, in fact. The day and night cycle also changes how the landscape looks, thanks to well-place lightning or the lack thereof.

In terms of sound, the game opts to have a list of looped soundtrack in the background along with various sound effects, like the crunch of grass as Robin runs across the plains, and ambiance including the sounds of nature. There are voice acting here too. Personally, I love the sound of Robin and Marian – both of them sound pretty believable as their respective characters – and I’m a bit on the fence about Little John, but I think Friar Tuck does sound a bit like a prepubescent boy which seems a bit weird to me.

Conclusion

Robin Hood – Sherwood Builders is a fairly competent action-adventure RPG that’s based on the beloved folk hero who is known for stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Everything from its gameplay to its progression to even its village building and management aspects are both fun and satisfying to play. The characters that make up part of Robin’s band of merry men are well-portrayed here as well, be it from their dialogues or the voice acting that brought them to life. So, if you love everything about Robin Hood and would love to roleplay as the legendary thief, Robin Hood – Sherwood Builders is definitely one game you’ll want to play.
