Summary

Roguelike games where you die over and over again are quite popular nowadays. This isn’t because people love seeing “game over” screens; when you get wrecked in these types of games, it doesn’t show up in the first place. You will just have to start over again, do another run with different weapons and scenarios, and attempt to get as far as you can. Notable games like this include the ever-popular Hades (which is undoubtedly one of the best in the genre) and Dead Cells.

Published by Ratalaika Games on the Nintendo Switch, REPLIKATOR does its best to emulate the success of the two abovementioned games. Essentially a top-down shooter with roguelike elements, you’ll put on the shoes of a space mercenary and take on various enemies in procedurally-generated levels. It’s your typical textbook roguelike experience where every run is explosive and action-packed, and when you end up dying, you’ll return with an excellent set of upgrades and new weapons to a familiar yet relatively new challenge.

So, should you give REPLIKATOR a shot? Let’s check out what it has to offer:

Plotline

The story does not play a central role in REPLIKATOR, but it does present a decent enough backdrop for it to make sense. You’ll essentially play as a space mercenary in charge of taking out enemies inside a space station under the supervision of someone called Engineer Adams, who will be providing you with weapons, upgrades, and other necessities while your boss, a man named Khan, enjoys the wide selection of drinks the canteen offers.

Gameplay

Essentially, REPLIKATOR is a top-down shooter where you die and enter the spaceship dungeons all over again, coming back stronger than ever due to the many upgrades available in Engineer Adams’ arsenal. Unlike Hades, where you can potentially go through the same areas, REPLIKATOR uses procedural generation to give you another look. So yes, no different runs are similar, giving you a fresh look with every playthrough. It also helps that you’ll have access to a number of mercenaries, each with unique skills and abilities.

REPLIKATOR’s controls on the Nintendo Switch are fairly smooth. You’ll move around using the left stick while aiming via the right joycon. Firing requires constant presses of the ZR button, while special abilities, weapon switches, and other functions are set in all the right places. Aiming in this game relatively stands out due to its ease - you can come in guns blazing, but at the same time, be deliberate enough to avoid hitting explosive barrels and traps.

REPLIKATOR’s procedural levels stand out. Every time you start, the game gives you a vastly different look than your previous run, with new rooms and layouts. However, the goal remains the same - you need to clear out the robots and critters from the many rooms, avoiding traps and dodging enemy projectiles on the fly. More importantly, you need to obtain access cards, upgrade items (cubes) and currency, and ammo to continue to the subsequent phases. Though you’ll be treated to explosive slugfests most of the time, there will be some instances where you’ll be bogged down due to the labyrinthine layout of the many rooms. You could miss an area or two and spend several minutes trying to find that place you missed that could potentially hold an upgrade or an access card. Moreover, you’ll have to deal with

Progression in REPLIKATOR is well-made, though it mostly relies on the currency you have available. You’ll collect weapon blueprints to craft new gear while earning new currency to purchase upgrades like added health, weapon rate, and ammo capacity. Apart from these, you’ll also earn implants across levels which can give you an edge in battle.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, REPLIKATOR is appealing thanks to its retro-style visuals and music. As someone who played retro games, it brings me back to the instances where I’ve enjoyed games like Judge Dredd and even Contra. The music slaps - it’s like listening to an OST of an 80s sci-fi movie. On the Switch, the game runs smoothly, even during high-octane moments when the screen is filled with explosions and rampaging enemies.

Conclusion

REPLIKATOR is an excellent retro-style indie and a perfect complement to your Nintendo Switch library if you’re looking for an experience akin to Hades, Dead Cells, or any other roguelike on the market. It delivers excellent action-packed gameplay that is sure to give you a fun time.
