Summary
Red Stone is a classically designed role playing game with simple game controls and very basic features. Like any other role playing game, you can select a character, though little customization is possible when doing so. Quests are also the main activity for increasing attributes, learning new skills and leveling up. Perhaps the most notable feature of the game is the ability of characters to transform simply by choosing a different weapon or developing a new skill. If you like the old way of playing an MMO RPG, then this game definitely is a must-try.
Plotline
In the continent of Prandel five centuries ago, the sky darkened for three days. Following that, a bright red light appeared for another ten days. On the last day, the light formed one bright ball and fell South of the land. Centuries later, a secret society called the Red Eye was formed to search for the Red Stones. These stones are said to have fallen during the Day of the Red Sky. In their search, these mercenaries have awakened demons from the deep. As an adventurer, you continue the search while battling a world where monsters lurk in every corner.
Gameplay
Red Stone Online is free to play, and you only need to register for a free account to get started. You’ll then be able to enter the game and create your character. There are over 19 combinations of characters, all with a certain skill and purpose. You can choose a gender and give your character a name. When done, you enter the game through a portal. Find your way outside the first location and into the city of Brunenstig. You can use the arrow keys on your keyboard or click the mouse to move your character around. Click on an enemy to fight and double-click on items and equipment to pick it up or wear it. You can use the Rest/Sit function by pressing C. Rest restores your energy and health after a fight.
You’ll find the first NPC in the town’s Congress Building in the center of Brunenstig, whose name is Lounshou. You can use the mouse to click on the NPC and it brings up the dialogue window. As you accept missions, it will be added to your Quest list. You can quickly view your quests by clicking on the Mini Quest icon on top of the Mini Map, or by typing the letter N. The first few missions will involve killing monsters, doing reconnaissance or helping others retrieve a missing item. Unlike modern RPGs, you’d have to manually open the Quests menu (F6) to view a list of available and ongoing quests. Once you accept a mission, you can use the red arrow indicators in the map to go where you need to be to start the quest. You have to manually move the character to the location when you’re just starting. Later on, you can teleport using special items from the Shop.
Each quest will reward you with experience points and additional Skill Points. Skill Points can be used to add the strength of your current skills. You can allocate which skill you want to add the points by clicking on the Skill icon and clicking the red plus sign beside each skill. You also get useful items when completing a quest, such as potions, weapons and accessories. Quests are also great for leveling up and collecting Gold. Gold is the only currency in this game, and you can use it to buy equipment, accessories and potions from the different NPCs at Shop Street in Brunenstig. You can accept multiple quests and complete them simultaneously. Some quest instructions can be a bit vague or misleading, so it’s important that you pay attention to the details.
Red Stone Online’s social aspects include global and private chat, adding friends, trading, creating or joining guilds and events. Some social features like the Player vs Player mode need you to be in a specific level to become available. Guilds can also battle other Guilds through entering Events. Unlike newer RPGs, NPCs hold the key to different events, and there is no single icon to click for switching to PvP or GvG mode. You’d have to find the right NPC, usually with the word “Event” hovering over their heads.
Perhaps the unique feature of this game is the ability of your character to transform. For instance, a Priest can become a Fallen Angel, an Archer becomes a Lancer and a Princess becomes a Little Witch. Some classes can transform when they reach the required level, and other classes transform when swapping weapons. Red Stone Online follows the classic way of gameplay, so expect to spend more time than usual. On the other hand, the story and quests are compelling enough to keep you going.
Community
Although Red Stone Online may not appeal to everyone, there are still a significant amount of people playing the game. Its Facebook page is regularly updated with news and event announcements, and it has over 14 thousand followers. Dedicated players also contribute game guides and tutorials shared via the game’s official Forum.
Graphics/Sound
Red Stone Online is a 2D RPG, so there’s not much to expect in terms of artistic superiority. While graphics and sound is not this game’s strongest suit, it does allow players with older computers to play it without any issues. The look and feel of this is very similar to earlier RPGs like Diablo 2 and Ragnarok Online. While most game art has the anime style, it’s almost not evident in the game itself.
Conclusion
Red Stone Online is a game reminiscent of older RPGs, and is great for anyone who don’t mind the grind in completing quests and leveling up. This game takes some work to play, and there’s no auto-mode to help things go faster. If you like RPGs that don’t have a lot of bells and whistles, and makes you think while giving you tons of fighting action, then Red Stone Online will not disappoint. It’s different and refreshing, and that’s actually a good thing.
