Summary

Punk Wars is a hex-based 4x grand strategy game featuring four warring factions, the Steampunk, the Dieselpunk, Atompunk, and Steelpunk – no cyberpunk though since it would likely be unfair to the other factions. In this game, you’ll get to battle for the supremacy of your faction of choice and dominate the battlefield. Each faction comes with its own unique units, buildings, and special resource. There’s also a map with plenty of Points-of-Interests to explore and events to respond to as you play.

Gameplay

If you’ve played any 4x strategy games or even real-time strategy games before, this game is easy enough for you to ease right in! However, if you need a refresher or some help, the tutorial is there to guide you. Though, I should point out that the game crashed twice during the tutorial for me.

Every game starts you off with your base of operations, which name will differ depending on which faction you choose to play as, and a couple of essential buildings, including a barracks. As you gather more resources and unlock new technologies thanks to the projects tree (a.k.a. tech tree), you’ll get to build a myriad of other structures which can be important for your civilization’s survival. These structures are pretty basic stuff, like a place to produce science points for the Projects tree, a building for more advanced military units, and more.

Base building is one thing, amassing your army is another. At the very beginning, you’ll only be able to recruit the most basic combat unit that you have, and like the many structures in the game, you’ll only be able to recruit more units by unlocking the corresponding “projects” in the projects tree. There’s some variety to the units you get to recruit as well, whether the units are ranged or melee; or if the unit has special abilities. There are also special units for each faction too.

There will come to a point where you have too much of a certain resource and could use more of another, or that you’ll exceed your maximum limit of a certain resource and might as well sell off the excess first before ending your turn. In this case, you’ll then need to use the Trade function in the game. Water is the main currency in Punk Wars, so you’ll need to convert your excess resources to Water first before you can use the Water to purchase the resource you need.

Resources are also needed whenever you want to use a special ability so keep this in mind when you’re planning your move.

From time to time, you’ll be given an event to respond to, and depending on your responses, you’ll then have to contend with the outcome, which can be good or bad. There’s no indication what a certain choice will result in, but in many cases, you can probably guess. If you keep your eyes peeled, you might also spot the nods the devs gave to other popular games like Fallout.

Now, Punk Wars comes with several game modes. Besides the tutorial, there are two more modes - Campaign and Skirmish. However, I honestly couldn’t say what’s the difference between Campaign and Skirmish, except that you can customize your matches in Skirmish. You see, I’ve completed the Campaign by defeating all other factions, but for some reason, the Victory screen didn’t pop up despite ending an extra turn, just to see if that works. It’s just odd that the game doesn’t seem to end.

Not to mention, if you’re expecting Civ-level complexity here, well, you’ll end up being disappointed. As fun as Punk Wars is, the game isn’t on par with popular and much more in-depth grand strategy games like Stellaris or Sid Meier’s Civilization. It is a lot slower-paced; the map is much smaller, and there’s a lack of features like diplomacy.

Community

Punk Wars is a single-player-only game which is a pity since I personally think that the game would work well in multiplayer.

Graphics/ Sound

The visuals here are fantastic. Every building and unit is lovingly designed. Plus, I absolutely love the fact that you can zoom really close to each of the units on the map and just admire the art. The sound is pretty spot-on as well, despite not being particularly memorable. There’s this ominous music playing in the background and every unit and building you click on will come with a sound effect.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, Punk Wars is a 4x grand strategy game that’s designed for beginners to the genre or for experienced players to enjoy some casual play. It’s not as in-depth as many other popular games within its genre, but it does feature a refreshing theme, really cool art and 3D assets, and some fun albeit small-ish maps. So, if you know what you’ll be getting going in, you might find Punk Wars to be a rather fun game to play.
