Prose & Codes

Summary
Prose & Codes is a fun and fairly relaxing puzzle game where you’ll need to solve simple substitution ciphers involving excerpts from both popular and obscure literary classics that are listed as “public domain” while being serenaded by beautiful piano music. The game features book excerpts from 7 different genres, ranging from children’s stories to tales of epic adventures; several difficulty levels to choose from, and if you like what you’ve deciphered, you can even hop on over to the online library that is Project Gutenberg since all these books are available to read and download for free.
Gameplay
As mentioned, Prose & Codes feature only substitution ciphers but they come in varying difficulty levels. At the beginning, you’ll be asked to choose between 4 difficulty options – the usual Easy, Medium and Hard, with the Easy and Medium ones having several “hints” in the form of solved letters. Interestingly, there’s also a Progressive difficulty whereby the difficulty increases as you play through the genres.
Talking about genres, as you might expect from a game that offers puzzles based on book excerpts, you’ll get to also choose between 7 different genres, ranging from children’s favorites and adventure to mystery and sci-fi. In case you have a large screen and poorer eyesight like I do or simply you don’t like to squint as much, you might want to turn on “Enlarged Text” mode as well.
The puzzles themselves are very well-designed. I personally love the excerpts they have chosen and the tools I have at my disposal to make solving each cipher as convenient as possible. The UI here is simply amazing! Not only is everything clear at first glance, but I also love that the game automatically moves on to the next blank as you solve the puzzle. This feature may not always be useful, since you don’t typically decode letters in order from left to right, but they come in handy when you do.
As you play, you may end up like me and start picking up some tricks so as to solve the ciphers faster. For instance, you might want to start solving the “easier words”, namely the one-letter (a or I), two-letter and three-letter words (mostly, prepositions and conjunctions). Words with repeating letters, especially if they are side by side, such as the double Ses or double Ls, or even words that have -ing behind them – that’s three letters solved! – can be easily solved most of the time too!
Are the puzzles still too hard to solve? Don’t worry! There are three hints per cipher available in case you need any help. When used, each hint will solve a letter for you.
All of the books featured in this game are also in the public domain and are readily accessible via the Read More button at the puzzle completion screen. If you’re interested to check the book out, you can simply hop on over to Project Gutenberg – that’s where the Read More button will take you to – where you can then read or download and then read the ebooks for free.
The only downside I think is that the game doesn’t record how fast you solve a cipher. This is something that I was interested to know after managing to solve a level within what seems to feel like mere seconds.
Graphics/ Sound
For a simple puzzle game, Prose & Codes opt to go the fairly minimalist route, which I personally think is a great choice. I also like that the game included a piece of artwork related to the book each excerpt was taken from. Plus, as you play, you’ll be serenaded by piano music that is both pleasant and relaxing to listen to.
Conclusion
Even if you’re not a whiz at solving ciphers, Prose & Codes will have you hooked from start to finish! The levels are very well designed and tailored to the difficulty setting of your choice, and the excerpts are all very well-selected. If you’re a book lover, not only can you have fun decoding the ciphers and bookmarking the excerpts that you love most; you can also take this opportunity to discover new titles that you might be interested to read.
Finding the corresponding book is easy as pie too since the game provides you with a nifty button that will direct you over to Project Gutenberg where you can download and read the books (in eBook form) for free.
