Summary

Prison Simulator is exactly what it says it is – a simulator that’s set in a prison complex. In this game, you play as a new prison guard going about his duties, whether it is a mere roll-call or trying to break up a fight. The ultimate goal here is to make sure you get that nice balance between prisoners’ and your colleagues’ respect just so you can help improve the rank of the prison you work in on the leaderboard.

Plotline

This game doesn’t really come with a typical storyline but there are events that will happen as you play which can serve as mini-stories. Since the game’s a simulator, you can create your own story as you go ala role-playing style.

Gameplay

Before diving into the actual gameplay, I should point out that this game has an incredible level of customization. You can literally customize the looks of every prisoner in your prison; though not the guards. Even the prison gangs, you can customize by choosing the gang emblem and deciding which prisoner joins which gang.

Once you’re done, the game begins in earnest. You play as a rookie prison guard, reporting to the warden for your first day. Of course, the game doesn’t just throw you in the deep end and expect you to figure things out yourself. There’s a nifty tutorial to guide you. Even as you progress, whenever you encounter a new kind of job, you’ll get a quick runover first.

However, as you might have expected by now, being a prison guard means carrying out prison guard duties. This means searching for contraband, patting down prisoners, checking parcels received, monitoring the prisoners at the prison yard, bringing the prisoners to the workshop for work duties, sending misbehaving prisoners to solitary, subduing aggressive prisoners and stopping prison fights, approving visit passes, improving the prison quality for both prisoners and guards, and more.

From time to time, an event will occur and you’ll have to respond to it the best you can, such as a prison escape attempt or a prison fire.

In between shifts, there is also a range of relaxing activities – most of them are mini-games – that you can engage in, including playing darts in the break room, honing your skills at the shooting range, or pumping some iron at the gym. The mini-games here are the common sort. For instance, when cleaning a gun, you’ll need to disassemble the gun first, use the correct cleaning tool for each part of the gun, and then reassemble everything once you’re done.

As you advance through the game, you’ll get to unlock new features too, such as visiting hours for well-behaved prisoners, along with some shadier activities like trading contraband with prisoners. Some of these new features are only available via leveling up and spending your skill points (along with some cash and having the necessary level required) in getting the skill you want, and hence, unlocking the corresponding game feature. Oh, and you’ll have to approach a guy in the Guards’ room to “purchase” your new skill.

Now, if you’re the “by the book” sort or if you’re a “dirty” prison guard who will do anything for your own benefit, you might find the game a bit harder to play. You see, respect is a very important indicator in this game. Not only it’ll dictate the sort of interaction and treatment you’ll get from both your fellow colleagues and the prisoners which may, in turn, make your job easier or harder, it is also directly tied to the Riot level which you’ll want to keep as low as possible… that is unless you want to intentionally trigger a riot.

Respect will also determine the rank of the prison on a leaderboard and the higher it gets, the more funding it'll receive from the government. This, in turn, means cushier items for everyone.

It’s likely not possible to have a high respect rating for both prisoners and guards, but you can damn well try to get a good, high-ish level for both of them. This is also why it’s a bad idea to have too much of either side’s respect since it’ll usually mean a much lower respect on the opposing side.

As a bonus, there’s also a TV room where you can watch snippets of a documentary featuring interviews with a former prison guard. He talks about his experience while on the job.

Now, as fun as the game is, the game does have a fair amount of glitches, most of which (that I’ve encountered at least) are graphical in nature, so they don’t really break the game… though the immersion does take a bit of a hit. There’s also an issue with guns in this game, at least at the shooting range. For some reason, the game’s not registering all my shots. Even if I’m 100% sure the bullet hit the target, the target doesn’t go down until I’ve fired my second or even third shot into it.

As someone who does get motion sickness from playing certain games, I’m eternally grateful for the white dot that’s placed permanently in the middle of the screen. If not, I think all the head bobbing will make the game incredibly nauseous for me to play, let alone enjoy.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics here are pretty good. I particularly like how the game manages to make the tattoos covering an inmate’s body look amazing. As mentioned though, there are some graphical glitches in this game, such as the fact that chairs will disappear if you look at it from a different angle.

In terms of sound, I think the music’s alright. There’s a nice variety but I’m not exactly a fan of all of them; some of the music sounds a bit weird to me. I should also mention that despite having “voice acting”, none of the characters in the game speak a language you’ll understand – it’s gibberish. This makes some moments incredibly hilarious.

Conclusion

All in all, Prison Simulator is an entertaining simulator to play for anyone who’s interested to role-play as a prison guard and is curious about how the prison system works in general. The game is fairly sandboxed in nature, allowing you to do whatever you want, though there are of course repercussions if you step too far out of line. The game’s a worthwhile purchase too since there’s a lot of content for you to experience and enjoy here.
