Summary

Planet Explorers is an exploration-driven, sci-fi-themed sandbox RPG where you play as one of the several pioneers who made it to the new planet, Maria… well, barely since you crashed landed on the planet. Here, you’ll need to work with your fellow pioneers to build a life and a colony for yourselves. The game features an amazing crafting and mining system, a massive planet for you to explore, and tons of story-driven quests to complete. It’s definitely the sort of game you’d want to play if you’re a fan of the genre!

Plotline

You play as a pioneer in this game who was crashed landed on the planet you and your team are supposed to be colonizing. As a result, the surviving members of your team are spread far and wide across the planet and it’s now up to you to find and gather them up.

Gameplay

Like any good exploration-driven RPG, Planet Explorers will require you to gather resources from the environment, whether it is by chopping down trees, hunting down the local fauna, or even digging straight into the bowels of the planet for precious minerals and ores. All of these stuff can then be crafted into more useful items like tools, consumables, defensive turrets and more.

Unlike many similar games, the crafting system here is quite convenient for the player. There’s no need to wait for the crafting to be complete, wasting seconds up to minutes just staring at the loading bar. Instead, you simply queue the stuff you want to be crafted, close the crafting window and go about your business as usual. The crafting process will progress on its own and the final products will end up in your inventory.

To craft new items, you’ll need to first obtain the necessary blueprints. Blueprints can be obtained as a quest reward or you can just buy it off a vendor.

It’s also great that the game doesn’t seem to impose any inventory limit, so basically, you can collect everything you see and they will just stack right up. However, gathering resources can sometimes end up feeling like a grind. If that’s the case, then you can just drop everything and try to complete some quests instead.

The quests in this game are very much similar to typical MMORPGs'. This means that you’ll get the usual fetch quests, escort quests, gathering quests, and of course, the quests where you are asked to slay a certain type of creature for an X number of times.

However, Planet Explorers does try to break up the monotony a bit by introducing a few more unique quests like the one where you’re required to defend your outpost from attacks ala tower defense-style mainly because you can set up turrets to help you. As part of the storyline, you’ll also be expected to help rescue the many survivors who are lost out in the wild and then bring them back to the base.

As you progress, you’ll also get to develop your many bases or outposts around the planet, allowing you access to more quests and more facilities/machines. However, I’m pretty sure the larger your base becomes, the more they will be attacked by the local inhabitants/fauna. So, due to this, you should remember to build and strategically place your turrets around the place.

As a little bonus feature, you can even recruit a human companion in this game and he or she will accompany you on your adventures, including helping you pick up some resources along the way and lending you a hand when you’re in danger. Eventually, you may get to tame a local creature and turn it into a mount too!

Since the planet you’ll be exploring in is pretty massive, the game provides you with a vehicle to ride around in. The controls are pretty easy to learn and get a hang of, and for most parts, your vehicle won’t get stuck in the terrain… unless you intentionally ram the vehicle up a tree or a steep slope, I guess. Even so, you could always disembark from your vehicle and then reset it by picking it up and deploying it from your inventory again.

Talking about vehicles, the most intriguing feature in Planet Explorers is probably the vehicle customization. In this game, you can actually build your very own, and drivable, vehicle from scratch! But of course, you’ll need to have the parts crafted beforehand, which may require a lot of mining trips and crafting.

Being a sandbox game, Planet Explorers also provides you with a pretty huge “canvas” on which you can create the most amazing of structures. It’s quite similar to Minecraft in that respect.

Community

Unfortunately, due to an error on the developers’ part, what was previously an MMO game has become a single-player experience. This is why the game has so much MMO vibes but is yet not an MMO game. Still, Planet Explorers has many to offer and is a really great game to play.

Graphics/ Sound

Planet Explorers is a pretty gorgeous game. Its graphics may not be as top-notch as some of the triple-A titles you may have played, but it’s good by MMO standards. The music and ambiance in the game are absolutely fantastic too. I particularly enjoy listening to the game’s custom theme song – yes, the game has its own theme song – at the menu screen.

Conclusion

If you love exploring alien yet gorgeous open worlds, surviving, as well as gathering materials and crafting, Planet Explorers is definitely right up your alley. You won’t be surviving just for survival’s sake in this game either since it comes with a pretty interesting storyline that will bring you to different parts of the planet too. Plus, there isn’t really a reason not to play the game especially since it has adopted the F2P model and is now completely free to play! No microtransactions or any of that sort of nonsense!
