Even if you’re new to the nonogram scene, Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons provides players with a concise tutorial to teach you the basics of solving a nonogram. That said, you’re still expected to figure out some strategies of your own, such as making intelligent guesses as to which tiles can be marked and which should be X-ed out instead. The goal is to mark all the relevant tiles as indicated by the number clues on the sides. There’s no need to X out all the non-relevant tiles in order to complete a level.

The game also has plenty of tools, hints, and amazingly helpful indicators to guide you through the puzzle-solving process. The number clues, for instance, will fade out once their condition is fulfilled. This is similar to how I solve nonograms using pen and paper - I’ll usually cross out clues that I deem solved myself. There’s also the incredible measuring tool which saves a lazy person like me from having to count tiles when making some intelligent guesses. There’s even an undo button, a counter to count the number of drawn squares under the cursor and a way to maximize the puzzle frame in case you need the puzzle (and the numbers) to be larger on-screen.

In terms of hints, the game has plenty to help you out in a pinch. You can choose the “check for mistakes” option via the in-game menu in case you notice a mistake and want to track down the root of the mistake, or you could cheat the game a bit by choosing the “autocorrect” option. You’re even prompted to either enable or disable clue roulette at the start of every level. Clue roulette here means having the game automatically and randomly fill a row and column.

Lastly, if you want to, you could also simply reset a puzzle in the event of a mistake and have a do-over. After all, each level is timed, and though you could easily turn it off, players looking for a challenge might want to keep it on so they could try to beat their previous best time.

One main thing I really liked about Piczle Cross: Story of Seasons is that every puzzle level is accessible right from the start. There’s no need to solve a previous level to unlock the next one. Not to mention, there are 270 nonogram levels in total for you to solve, so plenty to keep you occupied. After solving a bunch of levels (almost the entire first page of the normal nonogram puzzles), the collage puzzles will be unlocked. There are five levels in all, but each level has many mini-levels of varying difficulty – these are collage puzzles, after all! – for you to solve.

As you play, you’ll unlock new “collectibles” as well. These mostly come in the form of new Almanac entries.

The game features two kinds of graphical styles here. The first and most prominent is its 2D pixel-based images of various familiar game assets in Story of Seasons that you’ll see after solving each puzzle level. The second is mostly cosmetic in nature and is done in glorious 3D – the farm view. In this game, you’ll get to see Pete and Claire, the two protagonists from the original series, tending to their farm with the tools and items you’ve unlocked for them by solving puzzles.

In terms of sound, the game uses the same soundtracks used in the Story of Seasons series. They are both relaxing to listen to and may even bring back pangs of nostalgia for the games. There are also sound effects that help indicate some event or action, such as when erasing a marked tile or marking one.
