Summary

Pictionary was the first game of its kind that has a gameplay where players have fun drawing and guessing what each other has drawn. However, its move to the digital platform has been a tad bit slow, especially considering how popular Zynga’s Draw Something was way… back then. That being said, Pictionary does add something new to the genre to make itself stand out.

Gameplay

Now, when you first booted up the game, you’ll be asked a fairly odd question – “when were you born?” Considering that the game doesn’t have chat and hence, no need for chat moderation, you may be confused as to why they need to know whether you’re an adult or a child. Well, this is mainly because the game does have ads and this data is used to determine which ads they can show you.

For players who have not played anything similar before or even if you’re a veteran player on Draw Something, Pictionary starts everyone off with a compulsory tutorial. Thankfully, the tutorial is very short. A quick tip here – you might want to hop on over to settings once you’re done with the tutorial just so you can change your default username into something more to your liking.

Again, similar to Draw Something, Pictionary has a pretty similar gameplay where you and another, randomly-matched player will take turns drawing and guessing. This game mode is called Turn-based. Whether you start with a drawing or guessing that’s entirely random. If you do get first dibs in drawing, know that you will need to choose a topic before you will be randomly assigned a word to draw about. If the word is just too hard to draw, you can switch words (but not topics) by spending coins (game currency).

A quick note though, I’ve noticed that the words you get in the early levels are generally simpler to draw regardless of which category you choose. As you play, you’ll level up and subsequently unlock new and tougher words.

In addition to being quite responsive, the drawing interface is large enough for you to express your creativity, especially if you’re playing on a tablet. The art tools provided are sufficient enough as well, but at the beginning, you only start off with the eraser and the pen tool, along with a smaller range of colors and brush sizes, which can be a tad bit limiting. The only way you can unlock more tools and options is by collecting “Tool cards” and spending coins to upgrade or unlock a tool once you have enough cards.

These cards can, in turn, be only obtained as drops via the Magic Wheel, which you can spin once for free after every round of either drawing or guessing, or chests that require time to unlock. You can speed up the waiting duration using gems (premium currency) though. Aside from these art tools, you will also get the usual “undo”, “redo” and “delete” (the Bin icon) buttons.

Guessing is much easier. You just need to watch as the other player does his/her thing, and then, do your best to guess the word they are trying to depict. Objects, places, people and animals are often a lot easier to guess since physical stuff are often simpler to draw. Actions can be pretty tricky though since you’ll need to use a static drawing to show it. If you found yourself stubbed, there’s a single-letter hint that you can buy using coins. You can buy as many hints you can afford.

Interestingly, Pictionary has a rather intriguing, second game mode called Think Fast. Here, no drawing is required. You and your opponents will instead be competing to guess the same word from the same drawing for 5 consecutive rounds. Naturally, time is of the essence. The one who guessed correctly first will be able to proceed to the next round more quickly and will likely be able to finish the whole match first.

If you can’t guess the word within the time limit, you’ll be essentially forfeiting the round to your opponent. Of course, if opponent forfeited as well, then it’s a draw. In cases where both you and your opponent won an equal number of rounds, then the time you used to finish each round will then be taken into consideration.

Although Pictionary doesn’t have a chat system, it does allow you to link up your game account with your Facebook account so you can challenge your friends to a friendly word-guessing match.

Graphics/ Sound

The app itself has very simple graphics since it just needed to provide players with an interface to create their art on. The game doesn’t have any music either, though it does have some sound effects.

Conclusion

Despite its fair share of frame rate hiccups, Pictionary is a pretty fun word-guessing game that allows you to come up with creative ways to draw the words you get. It’s definitely a decent and less-crowded alternative to Draw Something.
