Gameplay

Before you start a game, you’ll be presented with a variety of customization options for the run, including game modes (you’ll need to unlock the other two modes besides the standard mode), the “seed” for the world you’ll be playing in (It’s random by default but you can set the seed number manually if you want to play the same world your friend had played before), and other players connected to the game if you do decide to play the game in local co-op mode with your friends.

There are also difficulty modifiers where “sugar” modifiers will lower your score bonus in exchange for an easier run, while “spice” modifiers will increase your score bonus in return for tougher enemies and fights. There are many parameters you can adjust here from having higher or lower enemy spawns to adding a buff or debuff on the boss for a limited time at the start of a fight, or you could simply not add any modifiers and play the game “as is” to get a 100% score bonus… you do you!

Like most games within the genre, Paper Planet encourages its players to learn how to play the game by diving right into one. During then, the game will have pop-ups to guide you through the few basics, such as the fact that you can teleport your turret from one end of the planet to the other, or that there are specific actions you need to do when facing certain projectiles, namely avoiding the yellow ones and shielding the planet from the red ones.

The gameplay is designed to be easy to grasp so it’s simple enough to get started. As with most games, you’ll start off easy where you just need to destroy all the normal enemy spaceships and clear the enemy wave. However, as you progress, you’ll start encountering increasingly more challenging enemies, including enemies that can spawn mini-spaceships or enemies that can shoot back.

At certain wave milestones, you’ll also encounter a vendor at the shop who sells a variety of items, ranging from health restores to a temporary shield for your health bar, to even upgrades that grant various perks, some of which may even come with downsides in exchange for the benefits they bring to the table. As long as you’ve got the cash – paperclips, you’re free to buy any item you want out of the six presented, or you could simply decide to buy nothing and continue to the next wave.

As you may expect, paperclips are earned by defeating enemies, but there’s a nice little bonus here: you can increase your paperclip multiplier by chaining up your kills, effectively earning you even more paperclips.

Once you reached certain wave milestones, you’ll encounter boss fights as well. Boss fights are quite fun to play in Paper Planet mainly because of how unique, and sometimes challenging, they can be. Each boss you fight here comes with their own set of attack patterns and abilities. When defeated, you’ll be allowed to choose a free upgrade out of the two choices given. Similar to the shop, you can choose to skip picking a reward if you want, especially if both upgrades you get just aren’t good match for the build you’re going for.

Although the game does have an end if you’re playing the standard mode, it’s very unlikely you’ll be able to reach it within your first few playthroughs. Game overs are common here, but every time you encounter one, you’ll get a bunch of score points which you can then use to purchase new item unlocks, which will then appear within a run, or even unlock a new planet. Note that besides the obvious difference in terms of the visuals, each planet further adds a fun new twist to the gameplay, changing up how you play the game.

Community

Paper Planet even comes with a local co-op mode where you can grab a buddy or three to play with. It’s definitely a lot different playing the game with friends, with projectiles filling up the screen a lot faster and setting a more hectic pace overall.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in Paper Planet is eye-catching right from the start. Featuring hand-drawn, doodle-style visuals that harkens back to the Flash era where browser games were all the rage, the game really leans into its old-school roots, despite the more modern gameplay, giving players who grew up playing Flash games that incredible hit of nostalgia.

As a bullet hell, the game also has lots of projectiles filling up the screen at any given time, but the color scheme used here ensured that you’ll almost always be able to clearly see the projectiles that you’re supposed to avoid – the yellows – and the projectiles you’re supposed to shield from – the red ones.

In terms of sound, the game features 8-bit style music that’s upbeat, further reinforcing the game’s old-school aesthetics and feel. There are plenty of sound effects too, making every projectile on screen feel impactful.

Conclusion

All in all, if you love the survivor-style gameplay that was popularized by Vampire Survivors, but you’re itching to try something different, Paper Planet is one game you simply must play! It perfectly merges the strategic gameplay from the classic Atari’s Missile Command with the hectic and intense, bullet hell from survivor-style games, plus with a nice planetary twist. There are plenty of content available as well, complete with a co-op mode so you can play the game with a buddy. With so much to offer, Paper Planet is definitely worth the price tag and a must-play for fans of the genre!
