Gameplay
To start playing, you’ll need to set up an account and choose a username. While you’re in the game itself, you may realized that the interface for One Piece TD is almost exactly the same as Pockie Defense. Hence, for players who have played Pockie Defense before, you should be familiar enough with how the game works. If not, no worries! The game provides a very comprehensive tutorial to guide you through the basics of the game.
In One Piece TD, the companions you have play a huge role in determining the battle power of your team. Generally, there are 5 level of quality of companions – legendary is the best, followed by brilliant, elite, superior and normal. To get higher quality companions isn’t very hard in One Piece TD, though it’ll take some time, effort and a dash of luck. For instance, you can recruit new and more powerful companions from the Tabarna. At the Tabarna, you are given 3 types of recruitment methods to choose from and different types of recruitment method will have different chances of yielding better quality companions. However, do take note that you have limited companion slots, so in essence, you won’t be able to recruit all the companions provided.
Another way to get better quality companions is by running your lower quality companions (all these companions must be of the same quality) through the SAD system to get a higher quality one. The lower quality companions will be lost in the process though, but it’s pretty much worth it as you can upgrade the quality another one of your lower quality companions by 1 level. Getting good companions does not only provide you with companions that have better combat attributes, but also higher growth value. So, ensure that your companions are continuously upgraded.
Furthermore, by completing certain levels of the tower defense game or by opening certain gift chests, you may come to own several companion tokens. These tokens, when accumulated to 10, can be turned in in exchange for a brand new companion. The quality of the companion depends on the quality of the token. For instance, legendary tokens will grant you legendary companions and so on and so forth. If you managed to collect all the companions of the same “pirate faction”, you’ll also earn a bonus title and get attribute bonuses!
Moreover, there are also 4 different classes of companions, namely sailor, sniper, doctor and navigator. Each class has its own specialty and abilities as well, for example, snipers are perfect for dealing damage to multiple enemies at once. Abilities can be triggered when you’ve accumulated enough power by killing enemy creeps in-game. Each class can be further specialized into sub-classes at level 10, 25 and 45. To level up your companion, you’ll need to send them for training (you can train up to 4 companions at a time). There are 3 kinds of training – basic, advanced and expert. The better type of training will take a longer time to complete. However, the level of your companions mustn’t be higher than your own level (the captain’s level). So, leveling up the captain level is important as well and you can do so by playing tower defense games.
You can also improve the battle power of your companions by equipping them with gear. These gear items can even be further enhanced and upgraded to increase their power. However, whether the enhancement of a gear item is successful or not will depend heavily on the success rate. The success rate will slowly decrease after level 10, making it even harder to enhance your weapons. Besides that, you can upgrade your companions’ gear by socketing them with gems as well. Gems themselves can also be upgraded by combining gems of the same level to obtain a gem that is 1 level higher than the gems you started with.
Both training and upgrading gear items will cost you lots of money though. Thus, besides earning money and even the occasional free item from playing tower defense games, you can also earn some bonus beli (in-game currency) via plunder. There are 2 types of plunder – one of which is free to perform (up to 10 times per day) while the other will require plunder cards, giving you an additional 5 times of plunder per day. Plunder cards are rare items that can be obtained randomly in the game.
In addition, you can also go exploring, provided that you have the necessary explore cards, for a chance of winning 6 random treasures. Of course, the more exploring you do, the higher chance you’ll earn something more valuable. There are plenty more features that One Piece TD has to offer. Do try to discover them all when you play the game!
Community
The community at One Piece TD often gathers around in guilds as well as on the game’s Facebook fan page. The fan page itself has around 6.5 thousand likes and considering that this game is barely 1 year old, the tower defense game is doing pretty good. Graphics/ Sound
The adorable 3D anime graphics for the companions in the game are well designed and with very nice details too. The background visuals though may seem a tad bit old school, but since this is a tower defense game, the visuals work well enough. Sound-wise, One Piece TD provides casual music that is pretty catchy and pleasant to listen to.
Conclusion
In short, One Piece TD is an excellently-designed and developed tower defense game that has a striking resemblance to Pockie Defense and yet has some new features to call its own! In this game, you’ll need to recruit better quality companions, equip them with the best gear and train them up in order to ensure that your team’s battle power is high enough to tackle the waves of bandits who want to steal your treasure!
