Summary

Have you ever thought of going to a dungeon, exploring its many caverns, and uncovering its many secrets? Well, this is something we can’t exactly do in real life, considering the consequences. Ancient ruins aren’t the most accessible places on earth.

Jokes aside, One More Dungeon 2, the aptly-named sequel to the first game, scratches this itch. Brought to you by Ratalaika Games, the game offers an engagingly colorful first-person dungeon crawler experience. Due to its procedurally-generated nature, the game delivers a fresh experience whenever you start playing. You will take on the role of a human prisoner tasked with defeating an evil creature staying in the dungeon’s depths.

One More Dungeon 2 delivers a decent variety of content with its many character classes and weapon types. Furthermore, you will not be left wanting in terms of enemy varieties, considering there are orcs, the undead, and many other monsters and bosses to slay. It has a fun gameplay loop, offering lots of content and things to do.

Plotline

One More Dungeon 2’s story revolves around an adventure-seeker who somehow ends up as a prisoner of a snail king. As a captive inside a labyrinthine fortress, you’re given a shot at freedom by the giant sentient snails’ leader: slay the monster residing in the depths, and you will be free. For now, you have no choice but to obey their wishes. Who knows, you might succeed, get stronger, and earn a reprieve. The thing is, this is not a straightforward job; you’ll have to go through countless dangerous levels while also battling powerful foes.

Gameplay

In a nutshell, One More Dungeon 2 delivers an engaging gameplay experience, offering a seamless blend of first-person combat, strategy, and exploration elements. Although the dungeons are not sizable, the environments it has are incredibly detailed and well-made.

Players start their journey by choosing from between a range of classes, each with its own distinct strengths, weaknesses, and abilities. Do you prefer to be dexterous and speedy? Well, if that’s the case, then choosing the rogue is your best bet. If you’d like to wield the traditional sword and shield, then a paladin is your best bet. There’s also a warlock class for those who wish to wield spells against the dungeon’s denizens. You’ll also get to wield a variety of weapons, including bows, maces, staves, and swords that you can unlock as you progress. Overall, there’s a lot to choose from, and you’ll definitely find a playstyle you prefer.

You’ll dive deeper into the dungeons, encountering a wide array of challenging obstacles and hordes of enemies. Foes you will encounter include slime balls that multiply when you hack them with your weapon, undead skeletons, and orcs. There are also plenty of traps to deal with, including the traditional spiked floors, swinging bladed pendulums, and lasers. Without the proper gear and build, they can make things a little difficult.

Don’t fret if you end up dying, though; you’ll return to a hub, spend gold and runes you collected from your earlier runs, and have a go at it again. These currencies can be used to unlock new weapons and levels, in addition to those you’ll find strewn across the dungeon in treasure chests, giving you more fuel to take on the challenges presented by the many denizens.

In terms of controls and how the game feels, One More Dungeon 2 is a perfect fit on the Nintendo Switch. The game runs perfectly with zero framerate drops and stability issues. Furthermore, the controls are fairly intuitive; I’ve never had difficulty taking on any of the bosses or struggled with the controls while in a pinch.

Graphics/Sound

One More Dungeon 2 features incredibly vibrant and varied environments, making exploration enjoyable. The biomes range from interiors that give off a supervillain vibe to overgrown medieval ravens. The enemy designs are incredibly unique and fit the usual dark fantasy aesthetic.

The audio design complements the gameplay with atmospheric music, immersive sound effects, and subtle environmental cues. While lacking voice acting, the game effectively conveys its story and ambiance through text-based dialogue and atmospheric audio cues. This comes in handy, especially when you face off against specific enemies and endeavor to dodge traps and other obstacles on various levels.

Conclusion

One More Dungeon 2 is a must for RPG players and roguelike enthusiasts. Its colorful visuals, varied gameplay, and diverse gameplay mechanics offer a challenging gameplay experience and a fun loop akin to roguelikes like Hades and Dead Cells. Now available on the Nintendo Switch, give it a shot today.
