Plotline

Drug addiction and domestic violence are horrible things to deal with. Unfortunately, millions of us have to deal with both problems; sometimes, help is nowhere, and those facing it have to move forward on their own.

Such is the story in Of Bird and Cage. You’ll dive into the wretched life of Gitta Barbot, a 25-year-old drug addict. She fights constant battles within herself and against those around her, ranging from her family to her workplace. You will have to face issues like home violence, particularly from her father, and even fights against male characters in the workplace.

The story feels profound at first, but things start to unravel when you get to the later parts. It reaches a point that it borderlines insanity and absurdity, but nevertheless, it doesn’t shy away from addressing dark themes. It feels as if Gitta is in the worst place possible since she has to deal with a deadbeat dad who would beat her, along with a creepy boss and a boyfriend facing the same drug-related issues.

Though escape from these situations makes things appear simple from an outsider’s perspective, things aren’t as simple as they seem. After all, Gitta’s system is riddled with drugs, and exercising sound judgment in her current state isn’t her strongest point.

Gameplay

Of Bird and Cage isn’t just a narrative adventure - it’s a puzzle game that centers around having Gitta escape from tight situations. The puzzles aren’t match-3 or anything simple: you’re required to find items and try using them on other objects across the room. Though the puzzles are pretty simple, it takes a while to solve them, considering the game doesn’t offer much in the way of help and tutorials. There is a lack of environmental cues or objects that can direct you to what you need to do, and it may lead you to scramble around. You’re left to wonder what to do, and on some occasions, you’ll probably run out of time, given that they all have time limits. If you do, your fate is sealed, and there’s nothing much you can do but accept your fate.

Decisions play a vital role in how the story goes in Of Bird and Cage. The chosen routes will determine the puzzles and quick-time events you’ll perform. You’ll face gut-wrenching choices, from taking another person’s life to letting them go scot-free. At the end of the game, you’ll see the consequences/benefits of your choices.

Every puzzle and sequence where you have to make choices is accompanied by heavy metal music. It gets rather convoluted at times, especially when there’s dialogue. In addition, it’s paired with moments wherein Gitta gets high and hallucinates, leading to somewhat supernatural instances. Sometimes the ground explodes and is engulfed in flames, while birds and supernatural beings appear out of nowhere.

Graphics/Sound

In terms of presentation, Of Bird and Cage has some visual and animation issues. It looks relatively dated, though it holds up reasonably well and runs smoothly on the PlayStation 4.

However, Of Bird and Cage excels in one aspect: the music. You’ll solve puzzles and navigate through scenes while listening to the tunes of Rocky Gray, Tina Guo, and Kobra Paige. In a way, the music may interfere with your train of thought, but at the same time, they help drive a sense of urgency. If you’re a fan of heavy metal, then you’ll find Of Bird and Cage an outstanding experience.
