Summary
Necroboy: Path to Evilship is a level-based puzzle adventure that’s centered around a young necromancer’s dream of becoming the Lord of Evil, and exacting his revenge on those who have shunned him because of his necromantic powers. With the help of his necrominions and his sidekick, the Lackey, he ventures into the puzzle-filled crypt of the previous Lord of Evil to secure the powerful artifact, the necronoss, which would make his dream come true!
Plotline
Necroboy, the protagonist of this story, was cruelly abandoned by his parents in a dark forest as a poor baby, and had to learn to survive on his own. One day, the kid realized that he has the power of necromancy and decided to set out to make everyone who has shunned him pay dearly… by securing a powerful artifact once owned by the previous Lord of Evil, the necronoss, hidden deep within the necromancer’s crypt, allowing him to be able to conquer the world and remake it in his own image.
Of course, he won’t be completely alone in his quest. By his side, he has resurrected a lackey, unimaginatively-named Lackey, as his advisor, as well as a growing army of necrominions, thanks to the plentiful souls trapped within the crypt, to help him.
As you progress through the game, you’ll also learn more about why Necroboy called himself that, and why he is so hellbent on becoming the next Lord of Evil. It’s both a hilarious yet sad tale, with heartwarming moments when Necroboy’s compassion can be glimpsed by the way he treats his minions.
Gameplay
As Necroboy: Path to Evilship is a puzzle game, naturally, the core gameplay loop involves solving puzzles with the help of your various necromantic abilities as well as your little necrominions.
As a necromancer, Necroboy has access to a host of abilities that would make puzzle-solving a lot easier on your part. He could, naturally, be able to resurrect souls into skeletal-like minions called “necrominions” to perform some simple actions for him - actions that he deemed are beneath him, such as pulling (or pushing) a lever, or if you have enough of the minions, pushing blocks and turning cranks.
The minions are, however, too light to stand on buttons to activate them, and weak fight off any of the massive guardians – a.k.a. bosses – who may guard the entrance to the next level. They also can’t climb stairs as they don’t have legs.
In the latter situation, you’ll need the help of another kind of necrominion (they have red-colored souls) that you can also conveniently resurrect, provided that you can solve the puzzle and get to them in the first place.
However, each puzzle in this game is confined to a level. This means that any necrominions you’ve resurrected in a level can’t be brought over to the next level, much like in Tinykin. Don’t worry though! You’ll always have enough minions to do whatever needs doing for you to get Necroboy to the exit so he could proceed to the next level.
Necroboy also has a very helpful ability that makes visualizing the connections between the different components of a puzzle a lot easier – the spirit sense. Not only can it show you where your necrominions are (x-ray vision, basically), but you can also see the links between say… a lever and the two doors it is connected to, making puzzle-solving simpler and more straightforward.
Of course, being able to “stun” a necrominion (or a bunch of them) to get them to wait for you to deal with another batch of minions, before reanimating them again… all of which are done remotely… is incredibly helpful too. You can even use this pair of remote abilities in such a way that allows you to “schedule” an action in advance, and only set in motion the planned action after you’ve made your way through a door or something.
After solving a bunch of puzzle, the game will then throw a more complex puzzle at you in the form of a “boss level” housing a guardian (or guardians) that you’ll need to defeat, though not by diving into combat yourself, in order to proceed.
In addition to these boss levels, there are also hidden levels, that you can find if you look closely enough while in Spirit Sense mode. These hidden levels usually contain a much tougher puzzle, but will reward you with a special necrominion upgrade, which you can usually get by clearing a boss level, when solved.
As fun as Necroboy: Path to Evilship is, the game still has many glitches that may force you to restart a level, sometimes multiple times, until you can complete the level. At one point, my necrominions disappeared into thin air after they’d seemingly pulled a block towards a wall and presumably got themselves stuck between the said block and the wall.
Needless to say, it was an incredibly frustrating experience, not only because I had to restart a few times, but because I was so close to completing the fairly complex puzzle almost every time I have to do a restart.
Graphics/ Sound
The graphics in this game is fantastic! The game features highly stylized visuals with strong and bold outlines reminiscence of the Borderlands series. The characters are all very cute too, complete with funny facial expressions during dialogues.
In terms of sound, the game has a nice variety of Halloween-themed soundtracks, which work well for the game. It doesn’t contain any voice acting though, so you’ll be expected to read the dialogues yourself.
Conclusion
Necroboy: Path to Evilship is a pretty fun and mildly-challenging dungeon-styled puzzle adventure, with a funny yet wholesome story to tell. The game slowly introduces new mechanics that gradually amp up the difficulty of the puzzles you’ll have to solve as Necroboy makes his way down toward the heart of the crypt where the powerful artifact, the necronoss, purportedly lies. Unfortunately, the game has some glitches, such as having all your minions just disappear, that may require you to restart a puzzle, so some patience would definitely come in handy here.
So, all in all, this is a fun puzzle game that would suit a midcore gamer who’s looking for a casual puzzle-solving experience, or for kids who enjoy solving challenging puzzles.
