Summary

Necro Story is an adventure-driven auto-battler RPG with a quirky and whimsical theme. In this game, you play as the last human alive… who also happens to be – well, used to be – a powerful necromancer. Anyway, the ghost of the white wizard who put you into enchanted slumber, essentially saving your life, needs your help to resurrect the human race, but not in the undead form. She has an elaborate plan, and like it or not, you must go along with it… lest you end up getting nagged day in and day out until the day you die.

Plotline

The game doesn’t provide a whole lot of exposition prior to the start of the game, but from the brief conversation between the first enemies you’ll slay, you can gather that the world’s human population has been wiped out – by what? Well, that’s for you to find out! – and you are the only human left, thanks to being put into an eternal (not so) slumber by the white wizard.

You kind of deserved it at that point since you’ve decided to raise a massive skeleton army and attempted to conquer the world with it.

However, the ghost of the wizard who vanquished you woke you up as she needed your help – and your skills in necromancy - to resurrect humanity, albeit not in the undead form. She has a plan and will stop at nothing – even if she must nag you, including at night when you’re trying to sleep, until you die – to enlist your help to bring back the human race.

In this case, you had no choice but to go along with her plan, but along the journey, you’ll learn more about how the world end up the way it is and what happened after you were forcefully put to sleep.

Gameplay

Before you start, you’ll get to choose a difficulty level, ranging from story mode to hard to even apocalypse mode, granted that you’ve completed the game on the toughest difficulty beforehand. There are also two extra modes that you can enable, namely Hardcore and Ultra Hardcore, which will markedly increase the challenge this game can offer. If you’d like to customize your game, you can even do so via its Custom mode.

You’ll get to customize your necromancer avatar here, too. Aside from setting its gender, name, and moral inclination (a.k.a. karma), be it mostly evil to overwhelmingly evil, you’ll be able to change the appearance of your avatar, from hat and clothes design to nose type, to even hair color. You’ll even get to choose a school of magic to specialize in, whether it is in life steal or dark pacts.

The game begins properly after a brief introduction, followed by a tutorial-style battle where you’ll get to kick the butt of three mushroom soldiers. Fights in this game are resolved in an auto battler-style manner, meaning that enemies will automatically attack once an invisible cooldown is ticked down. This is the same for your allies on your team – note that you can have two rows of three units, including yourself and your ghostly companion, on your team. The game even allows you to customize how often a unit uses its abilities, so you can have it prioritize abilities that you think are more beneficial to the team as a whole.

That being said, your character – the necromancer – doesn’t attack automatically and needs to be controlled manually. You can choose between a selection of spells to use on a spell bar that you can customize based on your playstyle and the specialization chosen. Spells consume mana which isn’t restored in between fights or even passively (by default) over time. Instead, you can invest in various skills in the skill tree which may grant you brief mana restoration, or you could simply use melee attacks which will spawn mana fragments that you can collect but put all your spells on cooldown… and no, you can’t just spam melee attacks either. There’s an invisible cooldown for melee attacks too!

Interestingly enough, you’ll also stumble upon mysterious towers on each map that house a portal to the underworld where a demon resides. Defeating the demon in its own realm will earn its respect and allow you to sign a dark pact with it so you can tap into its demonic abilities. These abilities make up part of the wide range of spells you’ll have access to in this game. Granted that the slots in the spell bar can be a bit on the lower end at first, know that you’ll eventually get new slots as you progress through the game and level up.

Now, you’ll start the game with only the ghost as company, but you’ll quickly re-learn your necromantic skill of capturing the souls of the fallen by simply clicking on the souls as they escape from the body. Souls come in many different forms. There’s the standard blue soul which will attempt to escape as soon as it is released, albeit at a much slower pace. There’s also the red soul which will aggressively attack your team after it is released. The golden soul counts as three-times the average soul, while the quirky green soul will teleport the first time you click on it, making it that bit harder to catch.

The goal of capturing these souls is to fill up a soul vessel which you can then use to “possess” a unit. To do this, you’ll need to drag the soul of the enemy you want to possess to the soul vessel to “recruit” it to your team. Of course, as you progress, you’ll encounter a whole lot more variety of enemies with their own special elemental affiliations and even randomized abilities, which does make the game feel a bit like one of those monster-catching games, like Pokemon. And like Pokemon, you’ll also get to restructure your team as you desire based on your go-to combat strategy and playstyle prior to any battle.

Unfortunately, benched units won’t earn experience points and will not be able to level up, so if you consistently use the handful of units in your lineup and wanted to change later on, you may find that the units you have benched for a long time may not be able to keep up with the rigors of end-game combat. Your teammates don’t restore their health in between fights too, and you’ll have to use precious life crystals to restore any health.

In addition to combat, Necro Story also has a world that you can explore that are filled with patrolling enemies, depicted as glowing balls. There are hidden chests that contain valuable rewards like trinkets that you can then equip on your unit and animae which functions as currency in this game. And yes, you may even stumble upon shops that sell items that you can spend your precious animae on.

Necro Story features a story-driven RPG progression that is filled with whimsy moments and manages to nail that addictive “collect ‘em all” formula just right! The variety of spells available, alongside the variety of enemies you can recruit to your team, are fun and varied enough for any player to create their own unique builds and lineups. Personally, I also love that the game has lots of little things that make it so much more charming. For instance, summoned skeletons spawn with different dialogues, while summoned zombies have different hairstyles.

Graphics/ Sound

Necro Story features a unique, hand drawn art style that adds to the charm of the game. The color scheme used here along with the design give the game a rustic, old-school appearance. In terms of sound, the game comes with a selection of tunes that provide a chill and relaxing atmosphere.

Conclusion

Necro Story is a lighthearted adventure-driven RPG with both an entertaining monster-catching aspect and a fun auto-battler combat where you get to reap souls from fallen enemies and have them join your team. Join the necromancer as he (or she) embarks on a journey to save humanity and rediscover powers that he once had, which made him the most fearsome necromancer there is!
