Gameplay

Merge TD helps to turn a traditionally midcore genre, tower defense, into a game that’s a whole lot more accessible to the casual gaming community by combining TD with a merge-style gameplay, plus some idle gameplay.

In this game, you’ll need to match 2 of the same level of turrets together to combine them and get a higher-level turret. So basically, matching 2 level 3 turrets will get you a level 4 turret, and so on and so forth.

How you can get turrets to merge with? Well, there are two ways – the main way is by waiting for the 10-second timer at the bottom to countdown to zero. Once it hits zero, the timer resets and you’ll get a chest to open. The chest will then give you a turret (the level depends on your own level). Note that you can tap on the timer – just like in an idle clicker/tapper game – to speed up the generation of the chests.

Sometimes, if you’re lucky, a gift box will appear instead of a chest and you’ll get a chance to “watch a video ad” or spend “premium currency”, which in this case is diamonds, to exchange the usual lower-level turret that you’ll usually get from chests into a higher-level one. This is only the first of the many ads-driven offers in this game. You’ll definitely encounter more, such as offers that will give you helpful boosts like extra damage or lower enemy health or offers that will let you “nuke” a tougher-to-kill boss, as you play. The game can be pretty persistent with its ad offers, I’ve got to say.

Anyway, as you unlock new turrets, you’ll then be able to by pass all the merging necessary and instantly buy a higher-level turret via the shop as well. These turrets will cost you coins and the cost will exponentially increase the more turrets you buy.

Being an idle game, the game actually plays itself while you’re away. What this means is that when you log back into the game after being away for a while, you’ll usually be able to claim quite a bit of game currency, which you can then use to buy more turrets.

Now, although progression is pretty good in this game, meaning that you probably can get to a very high level in the game with sheer perseverance, there might be times you’ll want to make use of the game’s Prestige system to give yourself some permanent yet passive boosts.

This system allows you to reset your entire progress in exchange for Prestige which you can then spend on permanent stats boosts, so even though you’ll have to basically start the game all over again, you’ll find that you’ll progress a lot faster than before. Naturally, the more progress you have “saved”, the more Prestige you’ll earn.

The game also comes with 3 maps (a.k.a. “islands”) so far. The gameplay is still basically the game in all of these maps though – it’s just that the background’s different. There’s even a trash can at the bottom right corner of the screen where you can “throw” away a turret if you don’t want it, but for some reason, I keep accidentally throwing turrets away when I’m matching turrets that are very close to the bin.

Besides the game’s push on ad offers, it also has an in-game store where you can spend real money to buy diamonds and then use those diamonds to buy boosts. There are many different types of boosts you can buy, ranging from the usual damage boosts to speed and gold boosts. You can even purchase “Timeskips” which basically gives you between 6 hours to 3 days’ worth of game currency within seconds.

Community

Merge TD is a single player game but it does have a leaderboard for some reason where you can show off the level you’ve managed to reach or how many rounds you’ve managed to last in the City.

Graphics/ Sound

Merge TD has some pretty nice graphics for an idle game. I really like the cute zombies that keep rushing your turrets too. The sound works for the game as well, giving the game the bells and whistles it needs to keep you engaged.

Conclusion

Merge TD is quite the interesting game, mainly because it combines the casual gameplay of a merge-style matching game with the strategy of tower defense games where the position of your towers is as important as the tower levels. However, the only unfortunate thing about this game is its ads. There are many ways you can get “extra stuff” only if you watch one of their many video ads, and personally, I think their push for ad views can be quite annoying. So, be sure to keep this in mind going in!
