Anyone who has watched TV shows about robots and mechs has fantasized about piloting their own. It’s a common tendency, and even if we’re mature adults trying to make a living, we’d still jump at the chance to sit inside a cockpit inside a mean steel machine. Mech Arena: Robot Showdown by Plarium grants us this opportunity. You’ll take the role of mech pilot and fight in various arenas, climbing up the rankings in this fast-paced and frenetic robot vs. robot showdown. So, should you jump into the battle arenas and start endeavoring to leave your opponents in the scrap heap?
Mech Arena: Robot Showdown is a fast-paced and action 5v5 mech battle MOBA. Here, you’ll join four other players in varied arenas, capturing conquest points while trying to take out enemy mechs standing in your way. Matches last for two to three minutes, so every decision, shot, and stream of autocannon fire counts. It’s also a must to quickly adapt to the changes in the battlefield and help out teammates who are somehow in a pinch.
The fights are, of course, the biggest draws of Mech Arena: Robot Showdown. You can dive into quick matches or jump into a ranked battle when you reach tier 9. There’s also the option to join and create custom matches. Initially, you’ll join a lobby, select one of the available mechs on your arsenal, and start fighting.
The match loop starts with players heading to one of the capture points, and within seconds, all mayhem will break loose. Afterward, autocannons will begin rolling, gushing out streams of bullets, while plasma guns and RPGs produce a cacophony of explosions. The controls are relatively smooth, and you’ll feel at home if you’ve played other games with a “virtual joystick on the left + action buttons on the right” control scheme. The unique skill button is on the right side of the screen, while there are two nifty reload buttons (one for every weapon) you can quickly access on the middle of the screen. PvP battles are pretty challenging yet are accessible enough to players who are more accustomed to a casual experience. To win, you have to eliminate all enemy mechs (along with the reserves) and hold the capture points longer. Holding these areas will generate points for your team, and you'll automatically win the match when you manage to reach 100.
One of the more exciting aspects of Mech Arena: Robot Showdown is the mech upgrade system. You’ll have a varied selection of chassis and weapons to choose from, ranging from fast autocannons to slow yet highly explosive rocket-propelled grenades. Each mech type has a unique skill, which can determine your overall playstyle. For example, the Paragon mech has a movement speed boost, while the Juggernaut can activate a shield to protect it from damage. Finally, there’s also the highly mobile Lancer that can jump high into the air and perform ambushes and quick getaways.
Upgrading mechs require blueprints and in-game free currency, but thankfully, the game is generous in handing out rewards. There are log-in bonuses and giveaways you’ll earn by performing various tasks giving you enough leeway to make upgrades to your mech and equipment early on.
Mech Arena: Robot Showdown has a rather large player-base, and this is evident in the rather nonexistent wait in the matchmaking system. In my case, it takes just a few seconds to find nine other pilots, though it may take as high as 15 seconds. If you’d like to find friends and new teammates to dive into the arena with, you can visit the official forums on Plarium’s website, or check out their subreddit.
In terms of presentation, Mech Arena: Robot Showdown excels. It looks absolutely fantastic on an iPhone 8 Plus and runs seamlessly at that. Most of the mech designs are akin to bipods, although there are those that float around, while others have multiple legs akin to a spider. In addition, you can also customize them by purchasing skins that will give them a much different look on the battlefield. Meanwhile, the maps are beautifully designed, and each lets you approach objectives differently while requiring different tactics.
Overall, Mech Arena: Robot Showdown is a fantastic example of a fun PvP-oriented mech shooter perfect for all types of players. It’s easy to pick up and play, delivering quick bursts of fun while providing a challenge. Thanks to its large vast of mechs, you’ll be treated to varied gameplay and have the chance to try out different playstyles.
So, if you’re planning to enter a mech’s cockpit and crush all opposition, Mech Arena: Robot Showdown should be on top of your list. It can potentially provide endless hours of adrenaline-fueled fun, both inside the arena and outside of it, thanks to its robust upgrade and customization elements.
