Featuring a quirky and cartoonish 3D art style, Mayhem Combat is an intense, action-based 2D brawler where you play as one of the many unique characters and go head-to-head against another rival player or an intelligent AI. The game is not a mindless beat ‘em up, however, since certain strategies are required to maximize your combos and the effect of your charged skill attack as well as to avoid taking unnecessary damage.
Mayhem Combat isn’t a very difficult game to learn, but if your aim is to master it, you’ll find that the game has plenty of challenges for you.
First off, the movement in this game is in a 2D plane despite its 3D looks. This also means that the controls for the movement of your character is really straightforward. You’ll basically be moving left or right. You can opt to use the default left and right button or you can go to the game’s settings and switch the buttons to a joystick instead.
Aside from the movement keys on the left part of the screen, there are several buttons on the right as well. You have your jump button at the top, a normal attack button (green in color), and a charged skill attack which is unique to each character.
Unlike many 2D brawlers, Mayhem Combat is interestingly strategic in the sense that it’s most definitely NOT a tap fest. Instead, you really need to time your hits and know enough to avoid standing or jumping into dangerous areas (these areas are highlighted in red, along with an exclamation mark). There are also other “stage hazards”, such as random shark attacks, that you will need to avoid as well.
Actually, you can sometimes use your surroundings, a.k.a. those stage hazards, to your advantage. For instance, if you happen to be fighting an opponent on a map with a train track on it, you can try luring your opponent on to those tracks and watch as the train flattens him as it chugs past.
Sometimes, you’ll get props that you can use against your opponents, such as explosive barrels, and at other times, you may find special power-ups such as the Restore Health power-up that’s available on the rightmost part of the first campaign map. As you progress through the campaign, you’ll unlock new maps to battle on as well.
Aside from knowing how to do battle, you will need to improve your fighters and their weapons too! You can get better fighter and weapon cards from opening reward chests that you can get by completing a match. You also get 5 free chests that you can open every 15 minutes per day.
It’s not apparent whether or not you can upgrade a fighter’s or an item’s quality but it’s certain that you can upgrade them using coins, provided that you have the necessary cards. There is quite a variety of brawlers and weapons as well, so it’s important to know which brawler or weapon to invest your coins into just to avoid spending precious resources on items or characters that you won’t be using.
Mayhem Combat has a pretty nice, linear-like campaign with optional boss fights on the side for PvE players, but ultimately, the game seems to be more inclined towards PvP as it offers 3 different game modes for PvP. You can dive right into the mayhem in the Free for All where the last man standing wins, or you can go head-to-head with another player in a 1-on-1 duel to the death!
There’s even a 1-on-1 tag battle mode where you can switch between 3 characters of your own choosing when fighting against your opponent. However, if you’re really good at PvP and would like to see how you rank among your peers, you can try battling opponents that you encounter via the Ranking PvP mode.
Mayhem Combat is a freemium game and as such, it has an in-app store selling game coins for real money. You can also purchase better chests with improved drop rates or simply drops much better loot.
The community in Mayhem Combat is pretty sizeable. It’s not hard for you to find a match for any of the PvP modes. Though, there isn’t a guarantee that you’d find someone of around your skill level.
The graphics in this game is rather amazing. Although I may not agree with some of the color schemes used for certain characters, I like how the game looks and feels. My only bone to pick with the game is how the characters look pixelated and slightly blurry during a match. On the other hand, I think the game did really well for its sound. Every hit you managed to land just feels so much satisfying.
In a nutshell, Mayhem Combat is a really entertaining and challenging action-fighting game that will get your heart pumping. It’s not your usual button-smashing beat ‘em ups and that strategic aspect that it has makes all the difference. So, if you enjoy playing brawlers on your phones, you’ll definitely want to check out Mayhem Combat.
