Gameplay

To start, you will need to choose between 2 game modes to play – adventure or zen modes. Adventure is a game mode that will bring you on an extended adventure to various beautiful locations (via the different backgrounds) as you solve layouts after layouts of mahjong. There will be mahjong-related mini-games inserted in between to spice things up but besides that, the games are pretty much standard mahjong fare. As you play the game, you may also unlock secret levels and other features for the second game mode along the way.

The gameplay in Mahjongg: Legends of the Tiles is similar to other mahjong-based games, thus if you had experience with any other mahjong games, you should be able to enjoy this game pretty quickly even without any tutorial. In each new game, you’ll be given a board filled with mahjong pieces arranged in certain configurations. Then, you will have to find 2 pairs of the same tiles to match them together – it is very much like the classic Pairs game, whereby you match 2 cards together after flipping them over. The tiles can be same in terms of their patterns, numbers or words. However, only tiles that are exposed can be matched. This means that only tiles that are not sandwiched between two tiles and are not stacked on by any other tiles can be matched.

Sometimes, you may also encounter games that have different rules than the rules in the usual mahjong games that you are used to. For example, some games may mimic the Pairs game a bit more closely by providing you with tiles that are face-down. Due to this, you are forced to expose a mahjong tile before you can flip it over to view its pattern... a lot like the cards in solitaire games. This adds the extra element of luck into the game, making the game slightly tougher but a whole lot more unique!

The Zen mode is the most interesting part of the game though. It is here where the game offers a huge variety of mahjong games with varying gameplay, such as Solitaire, Memory, Doubles, Waterfalls, Flip It, Nanjing, Hide and Peek, Four Rivers, Golden Dragon and Collapse. After choosing the play style, you can then choose one of the 75 layouts available in the game (45 of them will be unlocked as you proceed through the adventure mode). Similarly, you will then need to choose the background for your game.

Lastly, you will be able to pick the type of tiles you want from a total of 15 tile themes, such as Chinese Legends, Arabian Night, Wild Wild West, Hindu Script, South of France, Chinese Garden, Middle Ages and Lost Atlantis, whereby 6 of which are unlocked at the very beginning. Different tile themes may drastically change how well you play your game depending how fast you can familiarize yourself to the different symbols and patterns on the tiles. The game customization options provided in Mahjongg: Legends of the Tiles is astonishing for a casual game and it is no surprise that this mahjong game is highly popular among fans of the genre.

The game is not designed to “torture” or frustrate your brain excessively and thus, you are provided with a variety of utilities, including Undo, Shuffle and Hint that you can use to make the levels much easier. Furthermore, a small bell will ring when you ran out of matches so as to tell you to not waste your time looking matches that aren’t there and use your Shuffle tool. You are allowed to use these utilities as much as you like, though your score will be deducted by a small fraction for every tool you use. The final score you get will take in account of the timer in the game as well, but not to worry – the timer counts upwards and not down, so the longer you take, the less points you will earn. The timer will never stop you in the middle of a game.

The best part of the game is its “create layout” feature. Yes, you didn’t read wrongly – you can actually create your own layouts in Mahjongg: Legends of the Tiles and try to beat your own layout you’ve designed. Awesome, right? Not to mention, you can even upload your own backgrounds to create your own customized games as well! This is a great way for you to show your creativity if you needed a break from all the mahjong games you’ve played! There are also achievements that you can try to acquire too!

Community

Despite its popularity on Big Fish Games, Mahjongg: Legends of the Tiles does not have a huge community. Perhaps it is due to the niche community that it caters to or perhaps not many people know about this amazing game. Nonetheless, if you want to meet up with your fellow gamers, who enjoyed this game as much as you did, you will have better luck by visiting the game’s forums on the Big Fish Games website.

Graphics/ Sound

The graphics in this game may seem a bit dated but the variety is astounding! The game provides plenty of beautiful scenes from around the world, such as from ancient pyramids to beaches and villas. The tiles are well-designed and look as though they are glowing. This makes the tiles easier to see, especially in games with complicated backgrounds. The game also offers a wide range of tile types that you can choose to use. In terms of music, the game provides a nice tropical, mixed with some hint of tribal, music that is pleasant to listen to and is not at all annoying.

Conclusion

Mahjongg: Legends of the Tiles is hailed as one of the best mahjong games of all time for a very good reason. It allows you to enjoy the classic mahjong game via a variety of different gameplay such as Solitaire, Memory, Doubles, Waterfalls, Flip It, Nanjing, Hide and Peek, Four Rivers, Golden Dragon and Collapse. The game stands out from the other mahjong games due to its Zen mode as well as its “create layout” feature. As you play in this game, you can even visit a huge range of famous locations from around the world and enjoy the various tile patterns that the game provides. It is the sort of casual mahjong game that every fan of mahjong would definitely love! Try Mahjongg: Legends of the Tiles today – you surely won’t regret it!
