Summary

Lunaria Story is a MMORPG that features 2D visuals and a sidescroller perspective which is similar to popular MMOs such as Maple Story, the game can be played with a low spec PC and does not require additional downloads as it runs on a browser. You get to play as three different character classes for a variety of gameplay styles and embark on a grand adventure as you complete quests and defeat dungeon bosses from instance dungeons.

Plotline

Set in a fantasy world, Lunaria Story tells about the legendary Tablets of Power, which was a gift from the gods to the people that eventually got stolen. It was then become corrupted and has engulfed the land with evil energy. The players are stuck in the middle of the conflict and they must work together to uncover the evil forces behind the scheme and put an end to it and bring peace to the land once again.

Gameplay

Lunaria Story plays and feels like Maple Story, from the side-scrolling perspective up to the feel of the combat, which will provide a nostalgia feel to any players who grew up on classic 2D games. Lunaria Story still work and plays like your standard MMORPG despite running on a browser engine which lessens the need of downloading a full game client.

Starting off at the game, you will get to choose from three character classes; Swordsman, Hunter and Elementalist. Each of the classes use different skills but plays almost identical to each other, making the choice of getting a specific character class more on the type of weapon and appearance. Speaking of appearance, there are no options to change your selected character’s appearance which can be a let-down to some who wants to have a unique look at the start of their game. However, you can acquire cosmetic items from the item shop at a cost of real money if you are serious in changing your character appearance.

The controls are a bit different, they are based on classic MMOs than from the modern ones, directional inputs are done from the directional button, you attack by left clicking on the target monster or use any skills placed on the hotkey bar for easy access. Some basic function keys are a bit off, such as interacting with an NPC requires to press the R key or picking up loot requires the use of the ~ key. However, these can be remedied by reconfiguring the layout or picking a different preset layout found in the options menu.

One cool feature found in Lunaria Story is the AFK mode, not to be confused on leaving your character idle in-game, AFK mode allows you to let the computer do all the job in controlling your avatar in completing tasks, you can activate this when inside instance missions where your avatar will attack all monsters on sight and will use skills when needed.

It also has an auto-pathfinding feature that when clicking on the highlighted name from the quest objective, it will automatically go to that designated location if it is an NPC, but if the highlighted name is an item or monster, the avatar will automatically go to that location and attack or interact with it with the required amount, the feature is very helpful but also takes away the thrill of hunting on quests or loot as it now feels automated and you would just leave your character in AFK mode all the time while you do other things like playing a different game.

The game also features a pet system where you can obtain little companions from quest rewards or monster loot. There are different rarities that can provide a large boost to your character’s stats and even assists in attacking monsters. Players can own multiple pets but can only summon one at a time, they also need to feed their pets to keep the happiness level high so that they can respond to your commands and assist you. You can even merge your pet with other pets where it can inherit some of the stats or abilities and evolve into a more powerful pet with a different appearance.

Community

Since Lunaria Story runs on a browser, more players can play it with ease, and with that in mind, a lot of players are actually active in the game. You can interact with them and form parties to raid instanced dungeons and share loot, or they can form a guild and share a better bond with each other and meet new friends or challenge other guilds in PvP. You can also chat with them and send emojis as a fun way to react in the game.

Graphics/ Sound

All of the visuals in Lunaria Story are in in simple 3D models with the background in prerendered 3D effects or sometimes purely in 2D, the models feel a bit bland due to the less detailed textures and the animation feels stiff due to the game’s limitation. The soundtrack has some great tracks that offers a series of light-hearted tunes to keep the mood high, however the sound effects may need to improvements as some feels like it came from royalty free resources.

Conclusion

Lunaria Story is an interesting game that you can play in a browser based software, though it allows the game to be played without any additional files to be downloaded. However due to the limitations of the game, some of the visuals feel ignored which could have improved the presentation and the AFK mode feature has its pros and cons that may depend on the perspective of the gamer. Those who are looking for a full experience in an MMORPG, they may have a hard time enjoy this, but those who are fans of classic games like Maple Story will feel welcome on Lunaria Story.
