Summary

Lineage 2 is a F2P MMORPG that was originally released back in April, 2004 and has been actively developed and supported ever since its original release date. Through 13 years of constant development, the game, the world, and even the mechanics have been updated and improved with every passing year to make the overall experience better for everyone involved; mainly involving its hardcore and veteran fans.

Plotline

When it comes to the world of Lineage 2, it isn’t quite what it used to be and is nothing more than a war-torn world across 2 continents while 3 separate kingdoms try to fight for power. Developing your character will result in protection as you roam throughout these treacherous lands to form your own destiny, forged by your own hand within the land of Aden.

Gameplay

Lineage 2 plays similar to that of a usual hot bar MMORPG and for the most part all the player is required to do is to right-click on what they want dead, use skills and abilities until they drop dead, or runaway because they are kicking your behind in combat!

Be aware, that running into this game that you’re going to need to get used to left-clicking to travel around the world, as the “WASD” method is clunky and infuriating. More than 5 minutes into the game, you’ll realize just how easily you’ll get stuck on an object with a weirdly large hit box and it’ll be found out that the only way to escape its clutches through left-click you’re way out of there or you’re going to be stuck for quite some time.

Questing plays pretty similar to many other MMO’s, where you simply click on the NPC in question, accept their quest and then proceed to collect an item, kill X amount of creatures, or go talk to another NPC. A lot of the start of the game is pretty much “go and talk to this NPC” for quite some time and while it really does get boring quite quickly, once you’re released from the game’s clutches, you’re free to run out there into the world and do as you please.

Do expect to be grinding a lot in this game because the top way to level up your character and favorite class is through completing quests and killing a bunch of what pops out on screen first. A lot of the time it can get a little samey, but when you encroach upon the end game it starts to get more and more in-depth, resulting in more detailed and intriguing combat to some degree.

What really makes Lineage 2 stick out so much more when in comparison to other MMOs is the high variety of classes you can pick and focus on. When you first start you’re character you’re given an option of just two, but as you level them up and spend more time on them you quickly gain access to more and more interesting and unique classes/sub-class. Effectively, you can create your own version of a class, which can result in having an interesting variation on the healer, DPS, or tank roles, depending on what you prefer which is a very nice addition to the game.

Community

As with many other MMORPGs in existence, the sense of community you get when playing them is one of the most important parts and this is only accentuated in Lineage 2. There are plenty of ways to get in touch with the community, such as a friends-list to add your favorite players and friends, a forum to ask questions and take part in, and even a guild/clan system that works as you would expect. Upon joining that guild or clan, you can set up a group for different dungeons or events, and talk to one another through guild chat as you see fit.

Graphics/ Sound

Lineage 2 is a particularly old game with 13 years under its belt at the time of writing and while the game has had some graphical updates here and there, the overall visual ensemble for the game really does show its age and how dated it really is. At best, the game does look like a PS2 game, at least towards the end of the console’s lifespan.

Obviously, the graphical aspect of the game isn’t the most important, but the dated nature of the graphics is part of the game that can really throw new players off because there are many other MMOs out there that look considerably better than Lineage 2.

When it comes to the audio, it’s not quite as dated as the visuals, but it seems they aren’t a clear focus for the developers either. While it has to be said, the music in the game is both epic and gives off a fantasy vibe, but the audio for spell effects and skills doesn’t have much impact behind them; resulting in a less than stellar audio experience, regardless of the class that you’re playing at the time.

Conclusion

Overall, Lineage 2 may not have aged all that well visually, along with the audio, but overall, the package you get in this one F2P MMORPG is quite incredible. Over the 13 years of this game’s lifespan, there is absolutely hundreds or possibly thousands of hours of content spread throughout the game. For new players who get hooked, they’ve got a serious amount of content to go through in this game and the developers are only making more and more with every passing week with brand new events and the such.

While the game isn’t the most visually appealing, the amount of content you have access to right from the get-go, be it PvP or PvE, there’s a lot to see and do in this one MMO, and that’s what makes it the game that it is today.
