Strategy and card-collecting games (CCGs) are almost always a tough sell. After all, these kinds of games contain their own unique gameplay mechanics, their own lingo, and have an incredibly steep learning curve. Legends of Runeterra by Riot Games, has all these qualities but manages to be accessible and easy-to-learn while imposing a lot of challenge and requiring players to make clever plays to achieve victory.
You’d think that, well, since it’s another CCG, it’ll be another huge money-grab that’s full of microtransactions. However, Legends of Runeterra is anything but that. It’s a fittingly fantastic spinoff to League of Legends and even without the champions and their appeal, it can stand on its own. Though its flow is inherently similar to most of its peers, it manages to set itself apart. How? Well, let’s check out what it has to offer:
Set in the well-established world of the popular League of Legends franchise, Legends of Runeterra uses characters and aspects from the mainline MOBA game. If you’ve played it before, you’ll see the familiar colorful personalities of heroes like Braum, Poros, Teemo, and Garin. The characters take the form of champions and followers and their abilities and playstyle in LoL are carried over in this spin-off card game. For example, Braum excels at being a tank in LoL, and it would be best to use him as such in Legends of Runeterra.
The goal in Legends of Runeterra is fairly straightforward: take out the enemy Nexus. However, the road towards achieving this is anything but smooth-sailing: you’ll need to do so with clever use of your units, mixing up attacks and blocks, while casting skill and trap cards. With that in mind, duels are fairly fast-paced and aggressive. In addition, players can almost always respond to their opponents, giving battles an exciting back-and-forth feel and adds to the overall unpredictability of each game. Decision-making is a major factor as well: should you spend your mana to counter spell or save it up for future use? Thankfully, there’s an in-game mechanic called Oracle’s Eye that gives you the ability to see the field before making a move.
Legends of Runeterra has a lot of intricacies, much like any other CCGs. You can level up your units on the spot as long as you meet certain conditions. Moreover, there are seven “regions” in the game, and every card belongs to one. Cards in each region are best used together, considering they can synergize and cater to a certain play style. It would be best to try out cards and play styles of each region and learn which ones fit your preferences.
Legends of Runeterra is a free experience and as such, it has microtransactions. If you just want to play without spending though, don’t worry: it throws battle pass rewards and the ability to pick cards that you want using the Wildcard mechanic. The game also hands out weekly chests, giving you the ability to add more to your roster and create a formidable deck. It’s not your wallet that decides the battle. Instead, it’s your skill, card composition, and decision-making.
Apart from the Ranked, Expedition, and Gauntlet modes (where you can get more cards), Legends of Runeterra has in-game events where you can earn various rewards. In turn, you’ll have more to play for and at the same time, have more reasons to continue on playing.
Legends of Runeterra has a large and robus community. In-game, you’ll be able to find matches within seconds. If you want to join discussions and be part of the community, you can join the subreddit or join various forums. Moreover, if you need help with the game and in deck construction, there are text and video guides on various websites and on video platforms like YouTube.
On a mobile device, Legends of Runeterra looks and plays fantastic. You can easily do moves with swipes and taps and the accompanying animations are a joy to look at. If you’re playing it on the highest settings, you’ll be treated to one of the best-looking CCGs on mobile today.
Moreover, the followers and champions are fully-voiced, and in a way, it makes it feel like you’re actually playing LoL instead of a CCG spin-off. The outstanding voice acting adds to the overall immersion and it definitely adds to the overall experience, especially if you’ve played the main game before.
So, should you take your CCG skills to Runeterra and play try to rise above the ranks? If you’re looking for a balanced, tactical yet fast-paced CCG, then Legends of Runeterra should definitely be on top of your list. Moreover, if you’re a huge fan of League of Legends, it’s a must-play. After all, we’re all waiting for the new LoL mobile game and this feels like a great warmup.
