Kixel Soccer is a 3D soccer game that's optimally designed for the web browser and Facebook platforms. It lets you play a simplified football game with amazing pixel art graphics. In terms of gameplay, it features a couple training modes, quick play, and lobby matches that allow you to compete with other real players in the game. You can also customize your avatar with different types of costumes and hairstyles, and make your avatar uniquely your own.

Gameplay

Playing Kixel Soccer is just like any typical soccer game found on the game portal sites, the objective of the game is to beat your opponent by making the highest score within the time limit or reach the target goal first. To make a goal, you must kick the ball into the goal net, just keep in mind the goal keeper that will be blocking your kicks, and so be sure to play smart when attempting a goal.

The controls for Kixel Soccer are also similar to any web browser games, you move your avatar with the directional keys on your keyboard, pressing the spacebar will let you kick the ball, the longer you press, the more powerful your kick will be and the ball will reach a farther distance. There are also some trick moves that you can do in the game, you can do curve shots by pressing the directional key of your desired direction when you shoot or kick the ball midair by pressing back when you shoot, it adds some variety to your shots that can be your strategy in tricking your opponents to score a goal.

The game has two game modes; training and play. In training, you can pick from the three training sessions to help you get a refresher on how to play the game. It has the tutorial mode to explain the controls and different ways to kick the ball. In free roam, you can practice your skills and roam around the area and interact on the objects inside. Then on Vs Goalie, you get to have a practice match with a goal keeper as you try to land your shots at the goal, if the goal keeper blocks your ball, he will just kick it towards you so you can try at attempting another shot.

In the main Play mode, you can get to pick which server to participate. So far there are different servers that are targeted to different regions to provide a smooth, low latency gameplay. Once you pick a server, you can join a quick match or create your own game, here you can create your own and select the options that you want in your game.

You can then select different maps, there are four different maps and each of them has different obstacles that you can add to provide a new depth of difficulty in the match. You can pick the type of game whether it is a time limit or a goal limit match and finally picking the number of players per game, either as a 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3.

Competing against players will give your stats based on your performance, you can compare that with the rest of the players from around the world in the ranking feature. There you can check how well you perform and what rank you are placed, you can even compare yours from other players, or just check who are the top twenty players in a daily or weekly basis.

Customization is also available in Kixel Soccer. Though only limited to the hairstyle, eyes and overall uniform, but with the unique art style of the game, you can easily spot the designs of the hairstyle even from afar which can help make your avatar stand out from the rest. The uniforms are themed from different pop culture references ranging from Batman, Superman and even Tron, there are also some uniforms based on popular international Football teams for those diehard football fans.

Community

Despite having different set of servers per region, the number of players in Kixel Soccer is very few that it will take you some time to actually find a decent match. Moving to a different server may also be a problem as depending on which region you are trying to play, some servers may not be available due to the restrictions of high latency connections when playing. Since the game lacks any AI options as your teammate or opponent, playing with other players may be a difficult chore.

Graphics/ Sound

One of the impressive feats for Kixel Soccer is its art direction, focusing on a pixel art 3D style, it managed to provide that Minecraft-like blocky visuals while still maintaining a smooth 60 frames per second gameplay on a web browser. As for background music, it only features one track which has a blend of pop and uplifting theme to keep players in a good mood. For sound effects, the game features quite a few but sometimes it feels almost non-existent which can make the game feel a bit bland.

Conclusion

Playing Kixel Soccer would be fun if there are more players online. Without any ways of having an AI buddy or opponent, you won’t be able to enjoy much of the game as it is difficult to find a decent match with a complete team of real players. Though the gameplay is quite to learn and fun, the art direction was also managed to give the game a nice touch to make it more interesting. But if you are looking for a game with a lot of players, you might get disappointed with this one.
