Go on an exciting and somewhat psychedelic puzzle adventure with the adorable black worm, Pip in this one-of-a-kind game, Karma: Incarnation 1. In this game, you’ll get to meet many interesting characters, solve challenging puzzles, and explore an unearthly realm of oddly-shaped creatures and spirits. Most interestingly, you’ll also get to make moral decisions for Pip itself where every decision will allow you to learn and see the laws of Karma in action.
Two ethereal souls that are in love with each other were cruelly torn apart when an evil spirit abducted one of the 2 souls. To rescue its beloved, the remaining soul, Pip, was supposed to be reborn as a dragon, the only creature that can defeat an evil spirit. However, things did not go as planned and Pip ended up being born as a worm. Pip now needs to do whatever it can to conquer all the challenges it will face as it journeys across an unearthly realm in hopes of saving its one true love. Will Pip make it? You decide!
Karma: Incarnation 1 is a pretty simple game at its core when it comes to the game mechanics. It is basically a point-and-click puzzle adventure game where you’ll need to figure out what to do or, sometimes, where to click, to progress the storyline, and hence, the game.
However, unlike most point-and-click game, Karma: Incarnation 1 has – it’s in the name! – a unique karma-based gameplay. This means that by helping Pip decide, for example, how to treat the creatures, in the game, you’ll tip Pip towards the light or the dark side.
Pip will even slightly change its shape to reflect the moral choices you’ve done. A good Pip would have no spikes on its body while a bad Pip will have spikes. How many spikes Pip will have depends on how “naughty” it has been. For instance, gobbling up a sentient plant (with an eye) up is a big no-no since Pip will have literally “consumed” a soul.
However, all of these moral decisions will affect how the game plays out. Sometimes, having spikes might come in handy, for example to poke a poor piglet-like creature on its butt to get it to move out of the way. At other times though, the spikes are a hindrance.
Thankfully, the game’s merciful when it comes to making mistakes since the game can be quite tricky to figure out at times. So, if you did something wrong, like eating up the sentient plant, you can reverse the decision you made by spitting it out again. There are even time-limited actions that you’ll need to take, such as the time when you’ll need to get Pip “aboard” (if that’s even the correct word to use) a flying eyeball so you can get Pip to reach one of the higher vines.
In Karma: Incarnation 1, there is also quite a lot of puzzles that you’ll need to solve in order to proceed. Some are pretty simple to complete, but others can be a wee bit tricky. If you ever got lost though and have no idea what to do, simply click on the creature with the speech bubble and usually, you’ll get to see an animated guide as to what you’ll need to do. There are times when Pip will show a glowing light bulb above its head as well, so you’ll know that Pip has a tip for you.
The best part in the game comes when you’re introduced to the amazingly psychedelic astral world. This astral view that you’ve got is integral to the entire gameplay and by using it when it is supposed to be used, you can access astral portals and puzzles that will advance the story. However, if you’re curious like me and use it whenever you reach a new location, you may get lucky and spot a special soul which you can then click on to earn a Steam achievement. No spoilers though, so I won’t let you know where it is!
Although Karma: Incarnation 1 is set in an incredibly alien world that doesn’t really make sense, in some primal way, it does. The world is also populated with a wide variety of weirdly-shaped creatures in the game are (mostly) quite likable and have interesting personalities. These help a lot because you may actually be compelled to help them with their troubles. Though, I’ve to be honest - the creature that keeps poking Pip in the eye with a stick? Well, it’s somehow reeaaally annoying.
Despite its excellence, Karma: Incarnation 1 is still, at the end of the day, an indie game and of course, due to its uniqueness, it might have fallen through the cracks on the floors of some players who might be interested in this sort of games. Thus, if you’ve enjoyed the game, be sure to spread the word out to your friends.
However, if this sort of games is not for you, no worries – you can still help out the indie developers who have toiled for this game by sharing it to your gaming buddies who you think might love this. They might even thank you for it!
Honestly, even if you don’t really enjoy puzzle adventure games that much, you might just want to grab a copy of Karma: Incarnation 1 for its music and its graphics. The game is filled with a variety of amazingly mellow, tribal-like music that is seemed to be flavored with some hallucinogens and spiced with some sounds of nature.
The visuals in the game are just as awesome. The game has presented a beautiful contrast between the slightly duller-looking “normal” environment and the burst of psychedelic colors that just fill your screen the moment you turned on the astral view. Not to mention, although you won’t be able to understand anything that is being said by the characters in the game, there are excellently drawn instructional graphics to show you what the character is "talking" about as well as what you’ll need to do next.
If you think you know games, well... you really need to throw all of that out the window right now. Karma: Incarnation 1 is very unlike any puzzle adventure game you might have played before. It is specially designed to not only blow your mind with its unique moral choice-based gameplay, psychedelically-colored graphics and crazy cool music, the game features an epic and heartwarming story of love that’s supplemented with quirky characters and creatures. It’s definitely a game you wouldn’t want to miss!
The game’s currently on offer at a mere $0.99, which is a bargain for a game that has picked up numerous awards in established events like the Intel Level Up, DevGamm and the Indie Prize... just to name a few. So, get Karma: Incarnation 1 now and give it a try!
