Match 3 or more gems and clear them from the board in this fun yet challenging casual puzzle game, Jewel Academy! Unlike most over-the-top match-3 games, Jewel Academy doesn’t believe in using crazy power-ups to get out of tight spots while playing a level... or having an in-app store for that matter. Instead, you have to rely on yourself, your puzzle-solving brain, and your matching skills to complete the tougher levels. So, if you’re looking for a simple match-3 game without all the fancy effects and boosters, Jewel Academy is the game you’ll enjoy. Do give it a try!
Similar to most casual match-3 puzzle games out there, Jewel Academy is designed on the simple premise of matching 3 or more gems of the same color together just so you can collect them from the board. There are many special items that you can form by matching more than 3 gems though. For instance, if you managed to match 4 gems together, you will get either a column or a row-clearing gem. This gem, when matched, will clear out an entire column or row!
However, if you made a match-5 instead, you can get either a potion bomb or a rainbow potion depending on how you made the match. For potion bomb, you’ll need to match 5 gems in a L or a T-shape, while to get rainbow potions that will clear all gems that have the same color, you’ll need to match 5 gems in a linear fashion. Unlike the rainbow potion which can be activated simply by swapping it with a neighboring gem, potion bombs will need to be matched in order to be activated, clearing out all the gems within a 3-by-3 radius around it. That said, it’s interesting to note that in Jewel Academy, you can’t combine and activate 2 special gems by swapping them with each other.
The gameplay in this game is pretty “standard” for a match-3 puzzle game. Aside from collecting gems, you will also be given level objectives to complete just so you can proceed to the next level. Starting from simply objectives such as attaining a certain score, you’ll eventually be required to solve more challenging puzzles in order to unlock the next level. Not to mention, for most levels, you’ll only have a limited number of moves to use. So, it’s wise to think carefully before you make a move since wasting a single move might cost you the entire game.
Of course, if you’re good at what you do, which in this case, is matching gems, you’ll probably have some leftover moves at the end of a level. The remaining moves will then be used up via a bonus round called the Magic Mode. In this mode, each move you have left will be used to explode a single gem on the board, giving you a small number of extra points. Any special gems or potions that you may have will also be triggered.
Unfortunately, there is no cascade effect during this bonus round though. So, perhaps it’s best to form as many special gems as you can before you finish the level just to maximize your score.
Having as high a score as you can get is pretty important in Jewel Academy... mainly because you can earn up to 3 stars per level and that you’ll need to accumulate enough stars to unlock a new stage. However, if getting 3 stars is difficult especially for the tougher levels, then you simply need to get at least 1 star to be able to proceed to the next level. There are currently 180 levels in total in Jewel Academy. If you’ve somehow completed them all, you’ll be happy to know that the game adds in new levels every now and then.
Well now, matching gems doesn’t sound very hard, does it? But wait - You have yet to meet the devilishly challenges Jewel Academy has in store for you! The game has plenty of obstacles especially in the later levels that either you’ll have to circumvent or clear away. Obstacles like flower patches, for example, can be easily cleared by matching right next to them, while mud tiles can be cleared by matching over them.
The best part about Jewel Academy besides its simple, no-booster gameplay, is that there aren’t any restrictions in place, aside from the stars needed to unlock a new stage, to hold you back from blazing through all the 180 levels in the game. So, if you are expecting a very long and boring trip, maybe getting a game like Jewel Academy on your phone isn’t that bad of an idea after all.
Jewel Academy has its own Facebook fan page where most players tend to hang out at. You can check out some gameplay videos, find out about the latest updates and even communicate with the developing team themselves to talk about their game.
Being a pretty simplistic game, Jewel Academy has some really nice graphics. The gems are very nicely designed while not being overtly sparkly. The music in this game is pretty nice as well. The tinkling music seems to exude a feeling that someone’s up to some mischief of sorts, which I suppose, Jewel Academy is all about.
Jewel Academy is a “no frills” match-3 puzzle game that doesn’t have any crazy power-ups or even an in-app shop for you to get advantage in the game. Instead, you’ll need to rely purely on your matching skills and maybe a dash of luck to complete each level. Do you have what it takes to finish all 180 levels? Play Jewel Academy now and find out!
