Plotline
The first mission of your new mercenary career has begun! Your employer, who goes by the moniker “Raven”, has called you to the small island of Arulco crawling with rebel forces. There you board a chopper which is supposed to drop you off deep in the jungle. Thankfully, you’ve made contact with Raven and she has given you new meeting coordinates, which puts her right in the middle of a rebel camp. Armed with just a handgun, can you save her from the rebels?
Gameplay
To start playing, you’ll first need to create your own mercenary (character) and company! Choose a portrait for your character as well as the names for both your mercenary and your future merc company. Jagged Alliance Online: Reloaded provides 5 archetype classes for you to choose from, namely sniper, gunner, soldier, commando and scout. Each archetype will have their respective specialty and perks. For instance, the sniper is more efficient when using the sniper rifle, obviously, and has high perception range, allowing them to see enemies from afar. The gunner, on the other hand, specializes in shotguns and machine guns, and he is able to take more punishment from enemy fire than a sniper, especially when he is equipped with heavy armor. Choose wisely as the game does not allow you to reset the archetype of your mercenary though you will be able to reskill.
Once you’re done, you’ll be thrown right into an exciting tutorial mission - To save Raven from a rebel camp! The controls in this game are fairly simple to understand, though mastering it, especially the positioning and strategy part require certain practice. To move, you merely need to point and click. However, since this is a turn-based game, every movement, including interacting with objects or shooting, requires action points (AP). Every character starts with 20 action points which you can gradually bump up a fair bit by increasing the “reflexes” skill. After you are done moving and/or shooting, you can end your current turn to let your opponent/s take their move/s using the spacebar key, even if your action points are not used up.
To shoot, you just need to left click on the enemy. The game will show you how many percent you’ll hit the target, the distance the target is from you as well as the AP cost. You’ll need action points to reload too! You can also view your surroundings by clicking and dragging the screen.
The turn-based combat in Jagged Alliance Online: Reloaded, like its standalone counterpart, is rather intricate and may require some time to master. Bullishly rushing into an enemy camp will usually result in a total team wipeout – this is after all, a strategy game! The game’s line of sight works pretty well, so you can use the many covers, such as crates, walls and other objects including your team mates, provided to make your characters much harder to spot. There are 2 types of covers – full cover that completely blocks sight and shots, and half cover which makes a combatant harder to hit. Full cover is good for recuperating your APs while completely blocking your enemies’ as well as your view. Half cover is, on the other hand, the perfect position to take for a gunfight since you can take potshots at the enemy without worries of getting hit too often!
This useful line of sight feature however means that your sight is also limited. You will not be able to see enemies who are around a corner or even hidden enemies. Thus, it’s always best to ensure that you have enough AP before you turn a corner to walk through a place that seem like a prime ambush spot – at least you have enough AP to defend yourself or run to the nearest cover! It is usually not wise to use up all your AP just for the sake of not “wasting” them. Sometimes, wasting APs is much better than getting your character killed. You can also shoot at explosive barrels to clear paths or use them to strategically take out multiple enemies. Needless to say, you shouldn’t stand too close though!
Furthermore, you can also order your mercenaries to change their stance to crouch to make your characters even harder to spot since you’ll be making much less noise or be shot at, especially when coupled with a cover. There are also other options, including sprinting and viewing that you can cycle through by right clicking either on your character or on a location on the map. In addition, if the enemy is not facing you, you’ll have the element of surprise on your hands as well and be able to take the first shot! If you’re lucky, you may just get a clean one-shot kill. Thus, if possible, do keep well away from the enemies’ cones of vision
After combat, there may be useful loot such as weapons and armor dropped by the enemies that your mercs can pick it up to use it or you can sell it later on. Looting will cost you AP and the amount of AP required depends on per item looted.
Soon, you will realize the benefits of having a team of mercs instead of just a solo merc (you!) since you can execute more complex maneuvers such as outflanking the enemy. You can hire other mercenaries (they come without weapons or gear) to join your team for a limited duration of 14 days. If you can spare the real cash, hiring for a premium amount will persuade the mercenary to bring his own special uncommon gear and also the advantage of halved training costs and very cheap reskilling. Each mercenary has their respective inventory and AP in-game.
Ting! You’ve leveled up! It’s time to assign skill points in your character profile then! Every level up will provide your character with 2 body points and 3 weapon points. Body points can be assigned to mercenary skills, namely endurance, strength, reflexes, perception and dexterity, while weapon points will increase your character’s proficiency with a certain type of weapon, including handguns, SMGs, shotguns, rifles, assault rifles, sniper rifles and machine guns.
Not to mention, after your first mission, you will have earned your mercenary base of operations! Here, you can hire new mercenaries, purchase new equipment and gear, store or sell items, such as ammo, weapons, armor, consumables like medicine and resources and crafting components, heal up at the hospital (after the second mission) and craft items at the workshop (after the third mission). Each building can be upgraded with money and resources that can be earned from missions. Moreover, don’t forget to stock up on ammo before heading into a mission!
Ready to go “jungling”? Just sign contracts at the world map and complete missions to increase your rank and earn more money, loot as well as unique contract rewards! Missions costs fuel to initiate and the amount of fuel needed depends on how many mercs you can bring (there’s a limit). Carrying out missions after missions successfully will see to the growth of your mercenary company as you gain reputation! You can also gain experience points for your mercenaries so that they can equip better gear you’ve purchased from the store! Besides that, you can also pit your team with other player’s team in and exciting PvP match! You can even use gold bars (premium currency) to buy single-player campaign missions that contain with boss fights and 100+ hours of fun!

Graphics/ Sound
The 3D graphics in Jagged Alliance Online: Reloaded are beautiful although they do seem pixelated at the edges. Nonetheless, it is very good for a browser-based game and a free one at that! The inspirational music at your base is pretty nice to listen to and there are some sound effects, such as gunfire and ambient sounds, as well as verbal cues from your characters.
Conclusion

The gameplay is very similar to the gameplay in the standalone game and its combat system is as intricate! Plan your moves carefully as you have limited action points and be sure to make full use of covers to reduce any damage taken!
